  1. The amount of money a player makes doesn't change how productive he was. It helps determine whether or not the player was worth the contract (production vs salary), but it doesn't alter his level of productivity. But the question wasn't "was he worth his salary?". If a player is overpaid it doesn't create some arbitrary level where normally productive play is now suddenly viewed as unproductive or bad. "Well, normally that OPS would be pretty useful, but since you're paid $12 million it's not." Exactly.
  2. From Bruces' blog: As rich as Ricketts is, he'll have communication devices over there. I doubt owners are consistently on call anywhere except maybe Baltimore (Angelos) or New York (Steinbrenners) even when they're not on vacation. You can just as easily read into this trip that he's not going to be an overly hands-on owner who gets in the way. He sets everything up before the year starts as best he can and then lets the guys he employs do their job. I see no problem with that.
  3. I don't know that announcing we want to trade him would really lower his value much at this point. Teams are going to know the Cubs aren't happy with him. That said, I would still prefer Hendry not announce his intentions to trade Z.
  4. I actually think that would be a good situation to bring him up under. He'd be able to get his feet wet at the major league level in a situation where there's no pressure to win, and the experience he gains this year might put him in a position to succeed from the very beginning next year. I think back to 2006 when the Cubs brought up Marshall and Marmol prematurely because of all the pitching injuries. They took their lumps that year, but then contributed to the 2007 division title. A lot depends on how well Jackson can mentally handle having some initial struggles. Yeah, as I said I wasn't really advocating it and I definitely see your point. That would be the thought behind bringing up Atkins or Shark.
  5. Honestly, I mentioned Atkins because that was just who came to mind. I wouldn't mind Shark up in the same thinking, though it might be better to leave him in AAA to keep building confidence and working on developing pitches without getting hit around too much. I'm not sure how long he's under team control, however. I suck at figuring that stuff out.
  6. The response was overwhelmingly positive in the Z signed thread. rocket and Meph were probably the most negative about it. Maybe Tim as well.
  7. The Z, Ramirez and (I believe) Lee contracts were all considered hometown discounts at the time they were signed. Lilly's salary is pretty low and I believe the White Sox or Padres were offering more money for Kosuke when he signed with the Cubs. Dempster also likely signed a bit below market value. Soriano is really the only big contract that Hendry outbid others on. Z, Lee, Lilly, Soriano, Shark and Kosuke have NTCs or no-trade protection. Ramirez has a NTC through this year. Only Dempster and Aramis have player options, Z has a vesting option. Shark's NTC was a little crazy, but necessary to sign him. The reasoning behind NTCs and options is that you can potentially give a little less money or be more likely to get a hometown discount if you offer up player options and NTCs. For some of those guys, their 10/5 rights are valid already (Z) or are about to be (Lee) or we wouldn't want strongly to trade them now (Dempster). Some of these hometown discounts potentially don't happen without the NTCs.

  9. I do think you can trade him, but we're not going to get a thing for him I'd say. I'd be more in favor of suspending him for as long as you're allowed and then letting him pitch the remainder of the season. That way the outburst from yesterday isn't as fresh on GMs' minds and you're more likely to get some kind of a return on him.
  10. My thinking with bringing up Atkins instead of Jackson is the idea that they might not want to promote Jackson for his first ML duty in a lost season with a poor offense that won't give sufficient run support. Also, if you bring up Atkins and get a couple of good months out of him, his trade value might go the way Kevin Hart's did. Plus, you continue not to have the clock start on Jackson in that scenario. I'm not really advocating it, but it's a move I could see them making. And for the reasons I pointed out, I wouldn't necessarily be against it.
  11. I wasn't commenting on how the contract looked now. I commented that at the time the contract didn't look particularly bad. What has happened between late 2007 and now is irrelevant to that. At the time, three of his past five years he had xFIPs in the 3.54 to 3.82 range and was only 26 years old. We knew he was ultra-fiery at the time, but his only problem to date had been punching out Barrett. He hasn't lived up to the contract since then, but that doesn't mean you retroactively say it looked bad at the time.
  12. Staredowns and arguments aren't all that infrequent in baseball or in sports in general. It'd be really weird to fine or suspend him for staring down teamamtes. And apparently they've already been down the anger management road as well. To me, this is simply what happens when you mix an ultra-fiery player with a really bad team (the way we're playing now).
  13. Yeah, I posted that before I saw your edit and then I edited my post. The edit cleared up my question. Wasn't Z suspended when he punched Barrett? If so, I don't see how he wasn't dealt with the first time he threw a fit. It wouldn't have been smart to trade him for nothing then and we don't know how Hendry is going to react here - other than suspending Z indefinitely. I don't get what more they should have done that would have helped the team.
  14. I really don't see why Lou or Hendry should be fired over Z pitching a fit. He's been a very good pitcher for a few years now and, while he's been overpaid, his contract didn't look very bad at all when he was signed to it. A player throwing a fit shouldn't be held against the manager or GM. I don't believe either of them will be or should be fired, but I really hope it plays into the decision to not bring either one back. Maybe I am the only one, but this seems to be a larger issue than just 1 player throwing a fit 1 time. It's not just one player throwing a fit one time. It's a very hot-tempered player throwing a fit again. It's not good, but there's little Lou or Hendry could do about it.
  15. I haven't seen a lack of effort really. I just don't think this team is very good with Lee and Ramirez struggling. A team playing poorly can give the impression that the players aren't trying, but I think Z's explosion today is an example that the players do care.

  17. I agree with Gorz replacing Z. I don't know if Cashner, Jackson or Atkins will be next in line for a rotation spot, though. My guess would be they'd go with Jackson over Cashner (since Cashner is already seeing ML time) if they choose to go with one of the top guys. They could look at more of a filler guy to finish out the year, though, which would be Atkins, most likely.
  18. How do we know when a manager is in control of his clubhouse, though? It's assumed a lot of times when a team is losing, but just because a team is losing doesn't mean the manager has lost control. This is the only "incident" we've had this year and I really don't see anything else making me think the players are rebelling against Lou or anything.
  19. Thanks fellas. I was confusing myself off the top of my head when his first day came (couldn't remember if it was yesterday's game or today's). I still wouldn't put much stock into this, though.
  20. I don't really see how this is on Lou. Z is an extremely hot temper as it is and then we compile onto that a team that sucks right now and him struggling quite a bit. It has much more to do with those two things than Lou having lost control of the clubhouse, I think.
  21. 293 games in the minors at 2B, 118 games in the majors at 2B (including this year). So a little over 2 years worth of time at second between the minors and majors.
  22. When Castro came up Lou said that Fontenot would continue to be the backup at SS because they wanted Theriot to become fully acclimated at 2B without switching back and forth. Good thing that Lou will be gone after this year at the latest, otherwise, this could spell the beginning of Castros journey to Baltimore for a PTBNL. Isn't this the first day off Starlin's had since being called up? I wouldn't read a thing into it.
  23. ooooo. that is interesting And fruitless. We all know it won't happen. My guess is Gorz moving back to the rotation, which is fine with me. Cashner or Jackson may well get the rotation call if/when Wells goes to AAA or the pen.
  24. Kosuke did in his first year. If he had followed that up with a similar line of regression in his second year, I'd agree with you. However, his 2009 July OPS (.926) blew away his May 2009 OPS (.836). And his August OPS was significantly better than his May OPS as well. If his first two seasons as a Cub were very similar and he showed a pattern of getting worse as the year went on in each season, you'd have a point and I'd agree with you. However, he's shown two completely different patterns in two seasons. With only two seasons to work off of and with one showing something different than the other (in 2008 he wore down as the season went on, in 2009 he had two of his best months in the summer), I don't see how you can conclusively say he wears down as the season progresses.
  25. If he wore out and got worse as the year progressed, wouldn't his numbers get steadily worse as well? Instead, June is his worst month, but then he rebounds to a pretty respectable .808 OPS in July and then regresses some again, but not as much as June. Then his September numbers plummet again. Looks more streaky than wearing down.
