If trading Zambrano is priority number 1 this offseason, resigning Lilly will be priority 1.1. I don't think Z plays into this at all, to be honest. They've been discussing trading Z for nearly a week now (whenever I started the Cubs shopping Z thread). During that time, they've been furiously (reportedly) trying to trade Lilly. I don't see how Z fits into them deciding not to trade Lilly.

I agree. The word the past two weeks has been that the Cubs would most definitely trade Lilly. If they do not by the trade deadline, then the likelihood is that they didn't get offers they felt were of adequate value. In that scenario, I'm fine with them not trading him.

Making it all that much dumber to be actively selling him, at a low. I'm not arguing that point, I agree. I just don't think is at all surprising to anyone. The fact that it isn't a surprise doesn't mean somebody can't be pissed at the situation. It just seemed an odd time to be pissed, I guess. I was more irritated when I started the thread than when I posted the most recent update. -

We've known for a few days that they're actively trying to shop him. It's the reason I started this thread. All that quote adds to what we already knew is that they won't get the deal done by Saturday and, thus, will wait until the winter. -

Well, there goes that. If anybody's going to change their mind with the trade deadline looming, it's Colletti, though. He did trade Carlos Santana and a prospect for Casey Blake.

On the possibility of Dee Gordon being traded:

Yeah, I figured Gordon was. My point was not how to rate the two comparitively, just that they would be easily the two best "true" SS prospects in the minors (with Lake likely heading to third or another position). I think Lake could stay at SS. But I don't think he'll get a chance to stay there long term in an organization with Castro & Lee. However, it does most for his value to keep him there as long as we can to see if he can develop there like he seems to be doing on offense. Hm, interesting. I was talking the talk as Lake not being that good defensively, but it's nice to know he's a potential option.

Outside of Castro and Lee, I'm not sure we have a SS as good as Gordon (or close, even). Junior Lake probably is, but all signs indicate him moving to third. I'll always take a little extra minor league depth. True. I've just all but penciled in Castro as the SS for years to come, and only moving to 2B if Lee turns out. I suppose Gordon could push him to 2B as well. Depth is never a bad thing, but I rather get a 1B prospect like Sands, even though it would take a lot more than Ted Lilly to acquire him. I would prefer a prospect at a position of need as well, but if we get Gordon here then we could flip him, potentially, or HJ Lee for someone else in the future. Get the talent now and then figure out what to do with it.

Definitely. If you must, take Gordon and then try to swing him off to another team for a prospect at a position of more need (ala Astros getting Wallace).

Yeah, I wasn't really trying to differentiate that much between HJ Lee and Gordon, more just showing that Gordon immediately becomes the second best MIF in our minor leagues if we get him. As you said, that's really nice depth in case he or HJ Lee don't pan out.

Of that group, the Mets, Tigers and Twins have all (mostly) dropped out, though. The Yankees are only mildly interested, leaving the leverage much lower for the Cubs. They should still get better than DeWitt and a minor league pitcher, though. And Haren and Lee are both better than Lilly, are they not?

We should already have that with Hak-Ju Lee. I'm not opposed to adding Gordon, however.
