  1. There's a very real chance you'd only get 2-3 good years out of Dunn. If you feel like Gonzalez can be an elite hitter for at least 4 years of the deal, I think you do it. At that point, you can trade him for value or keep him if you feel that he can keep producing. Personally, if he wants 8 years or if the Padres want some silly deal like Wells/Cashner/Vitters/Lee, I might balk and go after Dunn instead. If he's looking at 4-6 years at mega money, however, I think he's worth more than Dunn, even giving up good prospects.
  2. Good point. I'd want an extension if I dealt Wells.
  3. Not as livid as I'll be if we trade Wells for anything less than Evan Longoria. I get that you like Randy Wells and that we shouldn't discount what he has done, but there are a lot of guys I would be for trading him for. Trading from a strength is a good thing. We shouldn't vastly overpay for Gonzalez and I'm not in favor of giving Wells away, but quality starting pitching is an area we are very strong in - both at the major league level and in the minors. We're very weak offensively throughout the organization and, especially, at first base. Gonzalez is an elite player - and, granted, will be looking for elite money, but he fills a massive hole for an extended period of time.
  4. With runners in scoring position and 2 outs: .910 OPS, 6 Ks in 38 PAs Late and close: .728 OPS, 21 Ks in 63 PAs He's definitely not been as good this year in late and close situations, but he's been excellent with RISP.
  5. That's what I'm thinking. I like DeWitt well enough, but I start liking him a lot more when I think about giving up good, young talent for minor upgrades (if at all). If somebody like Dan Uggla or someone similar comes available at a fairly reasonable price, however, I'd be very interested.
  6. Who's out there for us to pursue? The second base free agent market is pretty awful, though I don't know who might be had in a trade. DeWitt is probably the best option at second (or a Fontenot/somebody platoon). Brian Roberts? I don't know that I'm real interested in a 33 year old second baseman due to make $10 million a year through 2013 (he'll be 35 during that season) who is battling injuries this season and, in limited PAs, has a .673 OPS. He also has no trade protection next year and a full NTC in 2012, so if we trade for him we'll have to keep him at least until 2013. Plus, Angelos wanted a few arms and legs for him two years ago (or whenever that was). I wonder how much he'll drop his demands now.
  7. Who's out there for us to pursue? The second base free agent market is pretty awful, though I don't know who might be had in a trade. DeWitt is probably the best option at second (or a Fontenot/somebody platoon). The Cubs starters are 10th in the majors in xFIP at 4.13, third in K/9 and 8th in K/BB. However, the relievers are 22nd in the majors in xFIP at 4.44. Overall we're 14th in xFIP – top half of the league. The staff isn't fantastic, but the starters are very good and certainly nowhere near the worst in the league. That said, you're right that the pitching isn't significantly better than the hitting. However, the Cubs' offense is better than you characterized. The Cubs offense's wOBA is 16th in the majors, right smack in the middle.
  8. MLB trade rumors said the Marlins basically laughed at a team (Red Sox I think) when they called to check on his availability at the trade deadline. If by some chance he became available, it'd probably be for a massive amount. I think the Rangers offered their top 3 prospects+ and the Marlins declined. Yeah, even if he becomes available he'll cost way too much.
  9. Varitek WAR in 2008 and 2009: 1.0 and .5 Derrek Lee WAR in 2010: .5 That includes defense and offense, so leaving Varitek in the lineup is no better than leaving DLee in the lineup. That said, I agree with you that he shouldn't still be batting third. I was responding to you saying that any other team would have Lee riding the pine at this point. Not having any options for the future at first is bad no doubt. I think Ricketts would approve paying for Dunn or Pena, however, just as long as signing them keeps us within budget. The question is, is it better to pay top dollar for Dunn or Pena or shell out some serious prospects for Adrian Gonzalez?
  10. It's a beautiful sight.
  11. Tennessee's had two starting defensive linemen (Marlon Walls and Ben Martin) go down for the season with achillees tendon injuries. We were going to suck anyway, but crap.
  12. If firing a racing pierogi isn't enough to turn your organization around, you might as well just give up.
  13. Had we claimed Dunn, in order to get him we'd have to give up significant young talent that wouldn't have made it worth it (most likely). And while I'm not a big fan of DLee still batting third, a vastly underperforming veteran with a good track record (including intangibles) starting for an organization isn't that odd. Jason Varitek got 908 PAs for the Red Sox between 2008 and 2009 even though he posted OPS' of .672 and .703 in those seasons. The reason given for continuing to start him was his "veteran leadership."
  14. It's certainly good enough to not call for him to be benched, which was primarily my point. It's also a significant jump over last year's massive disappointment and it's right in line with his career OPS. It's nothing to get excited about, but for Soriano it's decent.
  15. This is my brother Daryl, and this is my other brother Daryl. Three of the best characters in TV history.
  16. As good as Soto and Castro have been this year, Soriano has the 4th best OPS on the team. He's having a nice season as well.

  18. Tennessee plays UT-Martin (FCS) and UAB (FBS) this season. I honestly don't know which team we'll blow out by more. Either way, the Tennessee-Montana game to start next year will be tougher than either. And Montana is FCS.
  19. I don't like Lane Kiffin. Well, to be fair, the Tennessee athletic department was in charge of hiring Kiffin. Not sure what they expected aside from a brief stay and NCAA investigation. I understand. And I knew there was a better than average chance that there'd be NCAA crap after he left. I just thought he'd do more while here. Do more good or bad? Haha, more good. I thought he'd be here longer than a year (figured only USC or the NFL would get him to leave) and with Orgeron, Monte and the rest of the coaching staff, along with his ability, I really thought he'd turn the program back into a top 10-15 program consistently before leaving. I also figured unless we got lucky there was a good chance the NCAA would slap us with at least minor sanctions in that 5-6 year time period.

  22. Yeah, I think it was in the very low 4s and would have been below Ohman's. The poor outing launched it almost to 5.0. He hasn't been great this year no doubt, but hopefully this will be a good experience. Versus lefties this year, Russell has 16 K vs 2 BB in 19.3 IP. He's been horribly unlucky on HR/FB ratio, though. Could be a small sample thing, but that's what has hurt him lately. Perfect example of a LOOGY.
  23. I figure Pujols will be an MLB broadcaster in the future, so his placement in the lineup currently is completely on topic.
  24. It's kind of a reputation ranking I think, but they've still got some really good talent on that team. I'm interested to see how John Brantley does. Alabama is easily the class of the SEC, but I don't think Florida is too far behind. Florida and Texas will be very similar this year in the transitions they are making. Brantley and Gilbert are both very capable of running more of a pro-style offense. That's a good point. Both teams will rely heavily on their young QB having success early. With Florida, I could see them running away with the SEC East or I could see them struggling early and fighting for the division title with Georgia and South Carolina.
