  1. You can put question marks on every trade rumor and FA target written by anyone, most of the time they'll be wrong.
  2. I read an article today saying the Mets might try and go after Peavy. http://www.nypost.com/seven/11082006/sports/yankees/battle_of_the_bids_yankees_michael_morrissey.htm?page=0

  4. I don't see that as much of a relevant career decision for a single guy with no kids. Zito will likely follow the money and his numbers also likely look better in the National League. I'm only going by what I've heard and I've heard it from a couple of people.
  5. All else being equal, I could see him staying. But I also can't see many west coast teams putting up the money others would. It's not like he's an old man nearing retirement who feels the need to be around his wife and kids. I'm not going to say he'd be foolish to pass up bigger bucks just to stay on the west coast. But I'd really have to question his motivation if his main decision rests on where the best surf is. I think he goes to one of the LA teams.
  6. I can't see Zito leaving the West Coast. He's a SD guy & ideally if he held no attachments to Oakland he would go to the Pads. Like Oakland, the money isn't probably there in SD.

  8. What if it also nets an amatuer player from Korea and/or Taiwan? I'd rather see them expand more the amateur levels of scouting in the Pacific Rim than the pro Japanese ones.
  9. I don't believe that was the question. I brought up reasons beyond the field why it would be a good move (marketing and transitional ease) why it might be a good idea to look at two Japanese players rather than one. Very few things are proactive in this game. I don't think buying relievers and making good trades (most fiscally motivated for a team to get fleeced talentwise) under the terms used in this thread as proactive. The offense was a major problem in '05 as well, but I felt at the time of FA, that it wasn't enough with Pierre and Jones. Would that be the opposite of proactive (stagnet)?
  10. Depends on who and how many you have avail. from your farm system. The difference between Wuertz and Howry is less than someone like Howry and Novoa. The Cubs needed Wuertz and Eyre b/c the options weren't there. Minus Borowski and Dempster (although, currently not in that boat), the Cubs have not been good at finding diamonds in the rough or thru the system.
  11. Oh yeah, I completely forgot about Southern Illinois (like every good Chicagoan) :D . It's basically like two states anyways.
  12. These recent injuries were probably initially started with his leg injuries and compensation for them. He rushes his upper body and his arm action and lower body can't catch up. Plus as good as his curve is, it isn't thrown properly.
  13. They're middle of the pack starters, probably a #3 on an avg. staff and a 4-5 on an above avg. staff. I think Lilly will be on the + side of 7 mil and Padilla will be on the - side of 7 mil. Right now, the Cubs need a top of the rotation starter and a middle one.
  14. Balt was middle of the pack and TB had the worst offense in baseball. Lilly G/F ratio .82 Padilla " " 1.45
  15. His mechanics might have something to do with his arm injuries.
  16. What about facing the below numbers against TB, Balt compared to playing in Arlington for a year as well as Philly.
  17. I don't consider that proactive since that was already in place when he was hired as GM, he likely had a large role in the initial development of the Pacific Rim scouting, but that was before he was GM.
  18. Sure he does, he has better stuff. Same reason that Marmol has better stuff than Hill, yet their K ratios are on opposite sides of the spectrum. Stuff isn't all about Ks, Brandon Webb has better stuff than each of them, yet his K ratio translates to about 6.7. Both pitchers have gone through odd increases and decreases of velo during their career. I like Padilla more than Lilly, but at that same token, GMs will value Lilly more b/c he is a lefty and pitched in that "difficult" AL east and whatever value they put on facing the Yankees and Red Sox 4-8 times a year with Toronto. I'm more than willing to bet that Padilla will get less than Lilly.
  19. Both are FAs, so previous salaries dictate little as far as future contracts. I think Lilly will get more per year than Padilla b/c once Daisuke, Zito, and Schmidt all sign, I think Lilly will be in demand moreso than Padilla and rec. a higher salary. As far as stuff, despite that awkward BP stat, I'd rate Padilla's FB and change better, while his slider is just as good as Lilly's curve. The problem with Padilla has been the ability to maintain it. Given that Lilly will probably get a couple mil more per year, IMO, Padilla will be worth more.
  20. The only why this game was close in yardage is b/c Harrington sucks, they gave up 160 yards on the ground, they didn't put any pressure on Harrington, and he is still bad enough to throw two picks and not establish a passing game. If a defense doesn't get any pressure on a QB and gives up the yards on the ground like they did, they are getting beat. The Bears couldn't stop the run and they couldn't put any pressure on Harrington (partially b/c of the scheme of Miami but mostly b/c they were outplayed). Obviously, the Bears O-Line had it handed to them by the Miami D-Line.
  21. BYU's schedule has been more difficult than many of the larger conf. schools. It's ranked 69th accord. to the Sagarin ratings.
  22. Minus the fumble by Hester and Gage, the turnovers were caused by pressure on Grossman. The Bears had Brown running all over them as well. Even without the turnovers, the Bears get whipped in the trenches and they'll lose. They got dominated on both lines.
  23. Even without the blitzing, Miami's D-Line made the Bears O-Line look terrible, they just abused them, they couldn't protect Grossman and give the runners good lanes. On the flipside, the Bears D-Line looked worse than the Bears O-Line which is saying something & why they were demolished. The Bears have to adjust to how teams are attacking them with quick 3 step drops and quick passes.
  24. More than likely he'll be cheaper, 18 months younger, similar production through careers, and has better stuff.
  25. If it was one or the other, I'd rather have Padilla over Lilly.
