  1. Thats why we would have to throw in some prospects to sweeten the pot I think Marshall and maybe a pretty decent prospect like Moore could be possible. I think the only thing that would be possible would be Littlefield laughing his butt off right before hanging up the phone. That was MY first response. Seriously, if Littlefield lets go of Duke, he's going to need a security detail. Wish Pittsburgh (now Philly - he moved) Jake would weigh in - Jake?
  2. I'd take Freddy - could the Cubs send JJ + $$ and/or prospect(s) to the South Side without too much difficulty? Freddy Garcia was part of the M's 2001 100+ win season w/Piniella, and Z would have someone from his own country to talk to. Really, the only bad season in recent memory that Freddy had was 2003, and he played most of that season with terrible equilibrium problems in his (was it?) right ear. I mean, he had green stuff oozing out of the ear - he was seriously messed up. But no way the Cubs swing that. Second choice would be JJ for Penny, but that ain't happening either. Also, CF for the Cubs is a question mark. Trading JJ takes away the only current viable option.
  3. You should have put this in Polls. :-)
  4. I agree with all of this. The Jones for Penny trade proffered in a different thread sounds interesting, but then the Cubs definitely need to find someone for CF.
  5. Because I'm too lazy to go stat-hunting, my choice is Lilly.
  6. I saw Meche when he played for Seattle. He's okay, but (1) not that impressive (and can really downright stink it up), and (2) I don't think the Cubs should touch with a 10-foot-pole any more pitchers with so much as a whiff of shoulder problems. JMO, but I don't understand all the Meche love. Lilly IMO would be better - capable pitcher, if not outstanding, and it would be such a rare thing for the Cubs to have two LH SP. (Now watch Hendry sign Lilly and he'll turn into Shawn Estes, circa 2003...) The market is just crummy for pitching, and of course there are at least two teams in the Central alone who want two new SP.
  7. 5-3 Atlanta, runners on 2nd and 3rd, Gooz melting down. I think I have better things to do... like floss my hair.
  8. Hello. I don't think I've tuned in to a Cubs game since well before the ASG. Seems like two years ago.
  9. If nothing else, you'd think the Cubs' pitching staff would be able to relay this information to the hitters, as they've had a fair bit of first-hand experience with this as a PROBLEM.
  10. Hey, Tim: my "Murderer's Throw" T-shirt is pretty faded, which is just as well because I think Dempster's the only name left on the list who was still pitching for the Cubs as of yesterday. (I'm not counting Z, because he SHOULDN'T be, at least not until next March.) Perhaps we should do a 2007 T-shirt? I nominate the "plate discipline" part of my new sig.
  11. Hm, I get a message telling me the link can't be found on the server?
  12. Neifury, part two? Okay ballplayer, but hardly a team's savior, and totally not worth re-signing. What possessed Jim Hendry to turn out the dough for OF when anyone could see - yes, even in March - that the Cubs needed another starting pitcher who was actually capable of getting into a live game on Opening Day?
  13. The ENTIRE starting rotation from the top of the year is on the DL, headed for the DL, or traded, and the Cubs just got tossed into the cellar courtesy of the PIRATES - a team with less than half the Cubs' payroll. Can you believe that roughly 70% of people in the latest cubs.com poll actually think Juan Pierre should be re-signed??? Talk about throwing good money after bad! I know this probably belongs in Rants, but the team is so flat out stinky that I think we should make a nice thread for Len to "gift wrap" for the front office. I also know I'm not making sense, but I'm so dumbfounded by the clusterduck of this entire season that I just gotta laugh. Luckily, I haven't been following much baseball for a while. Maybe I can get a $6.5 mil deal from Jim Hendry for that? Seems to work for some people...
  14. I'm surprised that he wasn't on the waiver wire. OTOH, there's usually some team who will overpay just because you have a LH pitcher.
  15. You want our pitching staff abused even more than it is now?
  16. Disagree. How many less of their 26 championships would the Yankees have if they didn't have the highest payroll year after year. Point taken, but with this division - heck, this league (NL), a team with a $94 million payroll shouldn't be three games from the cellar. Note that the team actually in the cellar has a payroll less than half that of the Cubs. The cash spent on this team should yield excellent, or at least very good performance, regardless of freak injuries like a broken wrist.
  17. He was terrific in April. He was HORRIBLE in May and June. He hasn't been so hot in July so far. Only ONE win since he racked up the first six before May even started. And for those of you who don't believe in W-L at all, he's gained four full points on his ERA.
  18. On one hand, I thought that it was a pathetic publicity stunt, which pretty much sums up my own opinion about the All-Star events in general. On the other hand, I saw two things that I haven't seen in four years (or more): (1) the NL won the game, and (2) the old timers hit the cutoff man. Maybe Rollie Fingers could teach the Cubs a thing or seventeen about defense? EDIT: Rollie was playing the OF, but I noticed that he still has that kooky handlebar moustache. I bet his arm has more innings left in it than some of our starters.
  19. Me too. In 1984 my sister had an aneurysm at 36 years of age. The doctors had to do brain surgery after the swelling got so bad. Two days later she was declared brain dead and we took her off of the respirator and she passed away. Hopefully the medical technology is better today than it was 21 years ago and Mr. Gammons can make a full recovery. I'll say a prayer for you Pete. I forgot to write that this all happened to my aunt about four years ago. :-(
  20. What, no listing for Kevin Tapani... if they called him out of retirement right now?
  21. Man - it's almost enough to drive you to murder for hire, isn't it?
  22. First of all, the Cubs are stinking it up so badly that I for one am no longer associating myself with them ("we're working on finding a replacement.") :D I think Baker is, or at this point should be, staying up nights not tweaking the batting order, but figuring out how to limit his liability so he can find himself a decent job next year (that is, unless Hendry is actually fool enough to re-up him). I personally don't care what happens to Baker, or a lot of the toolsy, streaky, injury-risk players Hendry has sacrificed too much money and in-house talent for. Baker could leave tomorrow, no biggie. As a matter of fact, here's a fun way to guarantee playoff-caliber team attendance at home for the rest of the season: nine of the first 10,000 customers over the age of 14 who show up at the ballpark get to manage the team for an inning. Would they really do much worse?
  23. I have a similar story. My aunt had an aneurysm at the age of 45. They got her into the ER and hospitalized, but they needed to get the aneurysm out. The risk of suffering a stroke during surgery was pretty great, and sure enough, she did suffer a stroke on the operating table. Four years later and she is just now being able to walk (and she'll never be able to walk completely normally), after countless hours of physical therapy, a surgery on her left foot (to straighten it - the ankle was bent to a greatly abnormal angle), and a dozen or so Botox injections to her left wrist and left ankle (again, to try to relax the contorted angle). Break out those rosaries, folks. Mr. Gammons is going to need them. :(
  24. Hi - Gameday is lagging. How many pitches thus far for Z, and strike/ball ratio, pls.
  25. First of all, the only people who have any loyalty to a brand (or, in this case, team) are their customers (or, in this case, fans). Kerry is like any other worker - he'll be there for the company when and if it's in his best interests, and vice versa. I predict that Wood gets a two-year deal from a team with a healthy payroll next year - provided the option doesn't get exercised. He can spend year one rehabbing to his arm's content (provided he's not physically done), and build up for a hunky three-year-contract in year number two.
