    This draft doesn't blow me away, but I like the fact that the Cubs decided to hone in on guys who can be described as, "He does X well enough to make the majors, and he has some upside." I don't necessarily think any of these guys are future All Stars, but they're the kinds of guys who seem likely to provide quality depth down the road, which every team needs.

    Ah yes, time for the yearly reminder that everyone else in the Cubs' division gets an extra draft pick because they are actual mid-market teams, even though the Cubs spend like one...

    Hm. Wondering if the Pirates took Davis with the expectation that Solemeto would be waiting for them at the start of the 2nd. He's not supposed to be a difficult sign, but he has some leverage.

    Round 2 kicks off at 12 PM central time. Here is a list of MLB.com's best remaining prospects. Admittedly, I'm kind of pulling for the Cubs to pop Andrew Abbott after the conversation that was just had in this thread comparing him with Wicks. 8-) I've been of the opinion that the Cubs' system is sorely lacking in quality SP prospects (although the RP talent is awesome), so grabbing some high floor types with a bit of upside would be a nice way to bolster the farm. Anyone care to share their wishlists/unheralded types for today?

    Preciado and Caissie in the Top 10, with Mena and Santana in the Top 15, is at least some comfort from the Darvish trade. I know they all were basically lottery tickets when the trade was made, and I know the Cubs aren't exactly showcasing a Top 5 system right now, but it's a better outcome than I initially expected.

    This is the correct take. The frustrating thing about this offseason is how badly nearly every move they made has seemingly backfired on them. I got why they replaced Schwarber with Joc, and I understood in a vacuum why they traded Darvish and Caratini away the way they did, but holy cats does that looks absolutely awful in hindsight. Maybe they all would have been injured and unproductive if they were still with the Cubs, but having Schwarber's production in the OF with Darvish in the rotation and Caratini as backup C probably would have seen this team looking a hell of a lot better than what it is now. On top of that, I'm having a really difficult time seeing how this team can be competitive in 2022 at the rate things are going. Ugh.

    Only if you also compile a list of teams that failed to overcome 6 game deficits with half the season to go. Even at full strength and firing on all cylinders, this is a seriously flawed team. The offense and bullpen might be good enough to carry them into the playoffs in a weak division, but that's about the extent of it.

    The 2007/2008 team was so much more enjoyable than the 2003/2004 team for me. I mean, yeah, the 2003/2004 team had higher highs, but at least the 2007/2008 team didn't have anywhere near as many heart-breaking low points.

    We all know how this will go. They'll lose tonight in a scrappy way, like a 6-4 final score where they show some hustle and fight, and then they'll blow the Brewers out tomorrow on their way to a stretch where they win 8 out of 11 going into the break and confuse the hell out of everyone about whether or not this team is any good.

    I'm kind of tempted to see if the Cubs could somehow pull off a hybrid strategy, where they sell off bullpen pieces and try to acquire guys who'll be around in 2022/2023 for the rotation. The pen has been ridiculously good, but I have zero idea how long this is going to last and I'm always leery of injuries when it comes to this sort of use. However, the Cubs also seem to have some promising bullpen depth at higher levels of the minors who could get called up and succeed. If someone's willing to offer a high level prospect for Kimbrel, a pretty good prospect for Tepera, or slightly warmed over corpse for Brothers, I'd be interested in that deal. Conversely, the rotation is butt and looks to remain as such for the foreseeable future without a meaningful trade.

    Best guess is the McCaskeys made a deal with the NFL, where the NFL agreed to pony up a significant chunk of the financing for the new stadium which will be paid off either in the long haul or as part of any sale of the team. The State of Illinois is not in any financial position to assist with this move and the best the Bears are likely going to get from Arlington Heights and Cook County is real estate tax relief. It's possible there's a major lender behind the scenes on this since most of the McCaskeys' wealth is tied up in the Bears, but I don't see how the NFL would allow the Bears to be plunged into that kind of debt to a third party unless that person is going to purchase the team.

    I think Chicago would take the money and run if the Bears made an offer to buy out the lease in a single lump sum payment at 75% of what remains owed between now and 2033. The only question would be what Chicago does with Soldier Field if the Bears leave.

    This team's going to get knocked out of contention come July when they have a delta variant outbreak that puts half the team on the shelf for two weeks, isn't it?

    He needs to spend more time brushing up on the written rules of baseball. His continued defense of the Twins in this situation is absolutely mind-boggling. Your dude could have been seriously injured if Duffy missed, but that's totes cool because the Twins' fee fees got hurt.

    Any thoughts on why he slipped? High level DE types don't usually fall like this unless there are medical or character issues, but I haven't seen anything to suggest either is the case here.

    His transition as Brett Favre's heir apparent is almost complete. Can't wait until he spends the next five years retiring and then unretiring.
