    It's also a two edged sword if criminal liability is a possibility for anyone involved here. On the one hand, any statement providing any specificity or detail could (a) interfere with a pending investigation, and/or (b) open the Bears up to potential civil or criminal liability. You don't need to be under oath for the feds to pursue criminal liability if you lied to them, and public statements could easily contradict private ones made to investigators. On the other hand, silence just begets more questions and frustration. It sucks because this whole situation is completely bizarre and the Bears are terrible with PR and media. But if there is a criminal investigation, then we're not going to hear anything about it unless and until the indictments drop.

    This team is completely gassed. Their young pitchers have exceeded previous IP/pitch counts, their bullpen has been a merry-go-round most of the season, and even their position guys seem worn out. It's not effort or desire to win; I just think they're physically spent.

    They also should have known about this in the offseason and taken steps to do something about it then, whether it was trade him, take a QB at #1, and/or even bring in a more competent backup QB than Nathan effing Peterman.

    My nightmare scenario involves the Bears unceremoniously parting ways with Fields, only for him to end up on a team that can actually get the most out of him. I'm not saying he's a future MVP with the right coaches, but I feel like he could have a decent career.

    Plus it's worth remembering that Wicks is well past his career high in IP and likely is in uncharted waters in terms of stamina/fatigue, especially given that he's being thrown into high pressure situations. It's going to make for an interesting conversation if the Cubs find themselves in a multi-game playoff series and Stro isn't back to 100%. Also also, seeing Wicks and Assad perform like this has me feeling so, so, so much better about the rotation in 2024.

    We hear about those sorts of personality traits all the time with scummy megepastors and politicians. Moreover, I don't tend to trust people who constantly engage in self-promotion. I also don't like the way he came to Colorado and promptly took a dump on the existing roster. Granted, results are results so far, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. As far as what sorts of unethical/immoral/illegal conduct could be involved? As I said, it's just a feeling. I want to be wrong, and maybe he turns out to be squeaky clean, but it's just a feeling that something feels off to me.

    Something tells me he'll be on indefinite leave within the next 3-5 years pending NCAA (and possibly state/federal) investigations. It'd be awesome if Deion is doing all of this on the up and up and he becomes the Next Great Coach, but I'm getting really weird vibes from how he's running that program.

    This is beginning to feel like Groundhog Day. We have an athletically gifted young QB whose weaknesses are primarily mental who has now gone through two comically inept offensive coaching staffs that have been unable to come up with a game plan designed to emphasize their strengths while also being unable to make improvements to those weaknesses. I get the feeling Fields is going to get run out of this town on a rail and the cycle is going to start again next year or in 2025. Hopefully he ends up somewhere that can actually unlock his potential, because it sure isn't looking like it will happen here.

    There are two depressing possibilities and one horrifically depressing possibility. It may be possible that Fields is a talented QB and this coaching staff is trash in terms of unlocking that potential and utilizing his talent to the best of his abilities. It may also be possible that Fields is fool's gold who can't be trusted to make reads and place the ball with any accuracy more than five yard downfield, and the coaching staff is doing everything they can to gameplan away from those flaws. Worst of all, both options could be true.

    Is this going to be like previous seasons where the offensive play calling is horrific and stupid for the first five weeks, and then they randomly open the playbook Week 6 and Fields throws for 300 and runs for 100, only for the team to go back to the dumpster in ensuing weeks?

    I hate it when OCs try to prove they're the smartest person on the field. I hate it even more for Bears OCs because it has been proven time and again that is never, ever the case.

    I'm not super worried about Ferris losing a bit of control at this point of the season. He's a super young guy who likely has never thrown this many pitches in a season before, so this sort of result is unsurprising.

    Have we had any updates on Brown since he went down with an injury? I had him pegged as a guy who'd get called up for bullpen duty during the stretch run, but I haven't seen him in any recent game logs since the Cubs put him on the IL. As for Horton, he's relatively fresh off TJS, so I think he's better off hitting his IP limit and getting shut down for the season for some well-deserved rest. As for Steele, at this point I think it's sink or swim. I imagine the Cubs are doing everything they can to limit his usage and keep him healthy, but he's not a 23 year old rookie and he's also one of the key guys they'll need down the stretch. The fun near-term questions are going to be whether the Cubs acquire anyone on waivers and who gets called up. The depressing question is whether we see Marcus Stroman again this season.
