Honestly, once I reached 13, it was a complete crapshoot from there for me. Normally we like to poke fun, but this system has a ton of guys who can appeal to a wide array of prognosticators. It speaks to the depth of the farm, which is a good thing. How do you feel about former top guys who ran into bad luck with injuries/development? Davis, Howard, Canario, Mervis, and Hernandez fit the bill. Low ceiling types who are likely to see the majors and get a second contract as a bench/bullpen/swing starter type? Strumpf, Herz, and Palencia are all options. Guys with intriguing profiles who are under the radar types? See pretty much every Tom post (Gallardo, Hearn, etc.) along with guys like Triantos and Murray.

Mid season 2023 State of the Farm Discussion
Outshined_One replied to CubinNY's topic in Cubs Minor League Talk
The State of the Farm is overall good, but there are some disconcerting things that give me pause. On the pitching side of things, the Cubs have lined up a number of fascinating arms who bring a variety of positive attributes. I actually really like that the Cubs have a mix of guys in AAA and AA who excel in different things and bring different attributes to the table. With the lower minors, I'm a bit skeptical of their depth, but there's enough there for guys (namely Farris and Gray) to take meaningful steps forward. My only concern is, historically, we're entering the dead arm period and we likely will see a number of these guys struggle and get shut down in the coming weeks. It's a normal part of the development process, but it can also be telling if those guys can hack it as starters long term. On the hitting side...sigh. PCA has been pretty much the lone shining star at higher levels and looks like a legitimate stud, but we also knew that coming into the season. Otherwise, it's been a series of struggles, injuries, disappointments, and that horsefeathersing pre-tacked ball in AA. The potential is still there for a lot of these guys, and I expect we'll see improvements all around in the second half of the season, but, aside from PCA, I'm really bearish on their position players to this point in the season. As for the draft, I'm overall feeling positive about the depth and potential it brings. The downside is Shaw is the only guy I'd immediately slot into my personal Top 10 (probably around 2-4 behind PCA), with Carico and Rivera likely somewhere in the 15-20 range. However, it's worth remembering how ludicrously deep this draft was, so I wouldn't discount anyone just because he was taken after the first or second round. As a result, the upside is there's a lot of breakout potential, particularly with guys like Wiggins, Sanders, and Rosario. -
My current issue is whether the Reds and Brewers have put too much space between them and the Cubs, especially since the new schedule rules mean the Cubs only play the Reds 8 more times and the Brewers 6 more times. If the Cubs can rattle off a few winning streaks and make up ground that way, then great, but it involves a heck of a lot more scoreboard watching than you'd want for a team with a 9.8% chance of making the playoffs (per FanGraphs). They basically can't afford to get swept at this point.

Considering the news today that the baseball program has its own hazing/bullying issues, I wouldn't count those chickens before they're hatched.

I don't mind the different threads for different days, but it definitely impacts ongoing conversations and can make things a bit difficult to follow for people who aren't actively following everything. It's helpful that each thread has first posts with summaries and links, though. I'd favor master posts for general MLB Draft discussions, Cubs-specific picks and links, and then a subsequent thread to track signings and bonuses.

It's always darkly funny to me when you have a college football head coach trying to dodge consequences. During the good times? Coach knows everything that's happening at all times and demands accountability from his players and subordinates. Coach is the eyes, brains, and face of this program. The buck stops here! During the bad times? Eh, Pat is more of a figurehead than anything else. Boys will be boys, ya know?

I'm decidedly whelmed by this draft so far. Shaw was the big get, but they followed it with an interesting mix of upside and depth. My only complaint is this isn't an easy draft to dream on (like the Marlins or Brewers), but it's because they didn't pop any big names, and it's still a good mix from a really deep draft. Day 3 should be intriguing, but I'm not expecting them to make waves.

Maybe 2011? Baez and Vogelbach were the headliners. but Gretzky, Maples, and Dunston were all big swings.

Johnson also had forearm/elbow issues towards the end of the season. I wouldn't be surprised if his medicals and asking price sealed his fate.

Draft and follow is back? I can't remember seeing anything about it. Anyone got an article laying it out? I'm kind of curious to see what they changed (if anything).

It's hard to know what sorts of savings the Cubs are currently looking at (if any), considering Shaw likely would have been a Top 5 pick in a normal year and Wiggins could elevate his stock in 2024 with a healthy comeback, so he has some leverage. George Wolkow is an intriguing option as a possible overslot candidate, given that he's local, young for the draft, and has major power hitter potential, which this system sorely lacks.

I mean, I can't hate on this pick for being a lottery ticket after wanting the Cubs to take a big swing at 13. A guy with possible plus plus stuff who doesn't have much mileage and just got TJS out of the way? That's about as big of a swing as you can take with this pick.

I'll agree that the timing of the criticism is off, but the pick definitely feels familiar.
