    Schemes mean nothing without talent. I'm fine keeping him another year. Take the Top 3 pick, trade down for a king's ransom, and restock the lines through the draft.

    I'm torn. This team isn't like the Cubs were at the end of this past season, where you could see promising young guys start to develop and the team could conceivably be a contender in 2023. On the other hand, I don't like it when a team consistently loses with zero hope for improvement without completely tanking. I support the tank generally speaking with this team, but if they put together a 7-10 or better season, so be it.

    That news broke last week I believe. It was a straight-up deal for Urquidy and was actually vetoed by Dusty with concern that Willy wouldn't be happy in a time-sharing role and he would just be gunning for his own numbers. He actually said this stuff. To be fair to Dusty, ownership never approved the trade so it probably wouldn't have happened regardless of Dusty's opinion. I just loved that Dusty take. One of those takes where you know it's coming before you even see it. Gotta give playing time to guys like Jose Macias and Neifi Perez because they're clearly not gunning for their own numbers, dude. God I loathe that man. I feel like I'm one of a handful of people who were actively rooting against the Astros because of him.

    I 100% agree with this and am kind of amazed that even while they mention it being a factor, it's being almost completely discounted in grading the trade by the pundits. The lack of options in FA plus stealing a resource from the Packers makes the grade from me significantly higher than the deal would be in a vacuum. This is a rare situation where both of the following statements are true: 1 - This was substantial overpay by the Bears. 2 - This was a good move by the Bears.

    And if you break that down that's 9-0 against the Philles and Mets vs 8-4 against the scrubs (Nats and Marlins). Again, blah blah blah draft position but I'm having fun with this. There were some seasons where I admittedly rooted for the tank because the team needed high draft picks, because I wanted the manager and/or front office gone, and/or because I wanted the team to have a strong reason to gut the roster in the offseason. That's not the case this season. The farm is in good shape with a lot of promising guys moving up the ranks. Ross has grown on me and the front office looks like it can identify and develop talent effectively. I like the stable of young pitching that's coming together. There's room for improvement, but the team ending the season this way gives me plenty of reason for optimism for 2023.

    That was just about the fakest of fake rallies I've seen in awhile. Taking 2 out of 3 from the Guardians would have kept their chances afloat (barely), but a full on sweep when their season was on the line was just awful. And a bit hilarious, considering TLR likely cost them 2-4 wins over the course of the season due to his dumbfuckery. I'm wondering if their offseason will use the Bulls' model of using injuries as an excuse, making no meaningful additions or subtractions, and bringing everyone back with the expectation that they'll all be healthy and productive next year.

    Conceivably, they could include affordable housing as part of the development in order to qualify for various government housing grants through federal/state/local authorities (think HUD or IHDA). More likely, they might offer to construct a new courthouse facility to entice Cook County and Illinois to chip in funding. The Rolling Meadows courthouse complex is directly across the street on Euclid and seriously needs an update. I could see the Bears offering to buy out that land and use it for office facilities and parking.

    They weirdly fit the mold of a team that could outperform expectations. New HC, a new offensive system that shows promise, a second year QB who's shown flashes of talent, a coaching staff with some promise, and a handful of offseason moves that could help move the needle. It's oddly reminiscent of Nagy's first year, for better or worse. I don't think the talent is there for more than 9 wins (barring a miracle), but the NFL is strange.

    Where does everyone think about how Thompson/Steele will factor into 2023? I'm guessing we'll probably see both of them get shut down in September once they get around the 120 IP mark, but I'm still not quite sold on them as reliable rotation guys on a going forward basis based on their relative inexperience as starters. I get that the Cubs can use them in the 4/5 spots with possible replacements waiting in the wings in AAA in case of injuries/struggles, and also that baseball is trending away from starters going through the order a third time, but, considering the Cubs are second in bullpen innings pitched in MLB this season, part of me wonders if the Cubs would be better off dangling either of them as trade bait while pursuing a mid-level FA SP who can eat up innings (in addition to the upgrades previously discussed).

    Givens was also traded. I'm...plussed by the deadline? The Padres were likely the primary suitor for Willy, but the Soto deal took precedence and ended up involving a heck of a lot of moving parts. I'm guessing no one would meet the Cubs' asking price elsewhere, which is fine. They can make a QO for Contreras and either get him on a reasonable 1 year deal or get a draft pick for him. I don't see him getting extended. With Happ, he can be dealt in the offseason as part of a bigger deal or the Cubs can work out an extension for him. Overall, not bad, not great.

    That's pretty much it. He ticks two boxes on team needs, but he should only be considered a possibility as a throw-in, rather than a primary or secondary piece.
