My current issue is whether the Reds and Brewers have put too much space between them and the Cubs, especially since the new schedule rules mean the Cubs only play the Reds 8 more times and the Brewers 6 more times. If the Cubs can rattle off a few winning streaks and make up ground that way, then great, but it involves a heck of a lot more scoreboard watching than you'd want for a team with a 9.8% chance of making the playoffs (per FanGraphs). They basically can't afford to get swept at this point.

Considering the news today that the baseball program has its own hazing/bullying issues, I wouldn't count those chickens before they're hatched.

I don't mind the different threads for different days, but it definitely impacts ongoing conversations and can make things a bit difficult to follow for people who aren't actively following everything. It's helpful that each thread has first posts with summaries and links, though. I'd favor master posts for general MLB Draft discussions, Cubs-specific picks and links, and then a subsequent thread to track signings and bonuses.

It's always darkly funny to me when you have a college football head coach trying to dodge consequences. During the good times? Coach knows everything that's happening at all times and demands accountability from his players and subordinates. Coach is the eyes, brains, and face of this program. The buck stops here! During the bad times? Eh, Pat is more of a figurehead than anything else. Boys will be boys, ya know?

I'm decidedly whelmed by this draft so far. Shaw was the big get, but they followed it with an interesting mix of upside and depth. My only complaint is this isn't an easy draft to dream on (like the Marlins or Brewers), but it's because they didn't pop any big names, and it's still a good mix from a really deep draft. Day 3 should be intriguing, but I'm not expecting them to make waves.

Maybe 2011? Baez and Vogelbach were the headliners. but Gretzky, Maples, and Dunston were all big swings.

Johnson also had forearm/elbow issues towards the end of the season. I wouldn't be surprised if his medicals and asking price sealed his fate.

Draft and follow is back? I can't remember seeing anything about it. Anyone got an article laying it out? I'm kind of curious to see what they changed (if anything).

Eric Karros has two sons who went to UCLA and have now been drafted. I'll say it before, and I'll say it again. I am old.

It's hard to know what sorts of savings the Cubs are currently looking at (if any), considering Shaw likely would have been a Top 5 pick in a normal year and Wiggins could elevate his stock in 2024 with a healthy comeback, so he has some leverage. George Wolkow is an intriguing option as a possible overslot candidate, given that he's local, young for the draft, and has major power hitter potential, which this system sorely lacks.

I mean, I can't hate on this pick for being a lottery ticket after wanting the Cubs to take a big swing at 13. A guy with possible plus plus stuff who doesn't have much mileage and just got TJS out of the way? That's about as big of a swing as you can take with this pick.

I'll agree that the timing of the criticism is off, but the pick definitely feels familiar.

Prolific college hitter who mashed on the Cape with a rock solid hit tool? It actually fits the mold for the team's approach to the MLB Draft since Theo took over. And it's not necessarily a bad thing, but where Shaw could end up with Ian Happ's career, it's more fun to dream on a guy like Nimmala.
