  1. My only hope it's of the "Y U TRADE BALLY HE SO GOOD?!?!" variety rather than the usual PTR and Only the Cubs dreck.
  2. You good, fam. I like your data and analysis, and you bring a lot of positivity to the table. It's the frustration of the results in game, and I get it, but I feel like every game thread for the last week or two has devolved into the exact same Shaw and Happ arguments.
  3. Oh look, it's this argument again. And it's during a drubbing by the Cubs. Cripes, I can't wait for this team to make a trade.
  4. He's one of the few guys in this draft who fits their 1st round hitter profile, who makes sense at 17, and who should be available. Up the middle position player who should stick, good production in college and the Cape, enough power potential to be a middle of the order type, but enough present production that he'd still be useful even if the home runs don't pan out. It makes a ton of sense from an outside perspective. But I'm also waiting patiently for the Friday/Saturday rumors to start coming out, since we normally start to hear about underslot deals and guys who are making huge demands. Aloy seems like an easy overslot candidate for a team in the Top 10.
  5. USA Today mock, for what it's worth. I can't complain, but I'm getting kind of tired of seeing this pick again and again and again and again.
  6. One thing that I think is worth keeping in mind is the MLB Draft is this coming weekend. Last year, the Cubs drafted Cam Smith, who, while he was a bit of a unicorn, is currently in the majors. Two years ago, their pick was Matt Shaw. The Cubs have had enough success with drafting, scouting, and developing hitters in recent memory that I wouldn't lose much sleep over them trading away guys like Alcantara, Caissie, and/or Ballesteros in a fair deal for controlled major league assets. It's mostly a question to me of whether a team like the Nationals (Gore) or the Twins (Ryan) are willing to deal if the Cubs are truly pushing in their chips.
  7. This year is decidedly weird for the Cubs. This draft's strength is with HS shortstops, which is a demographic the Cubs tend to avoid in early rounds (Ed Howard not withstanding, but 2020 was, well, 2020), and the Cubs are picking at 17, so the guys who fall into their usual bread and butter might be seen as unsexy picks or even overslots (RHPs Patrick Forbes and Riley Quick come to mind). Come Saturday, we should have a better grip on how the chips are going to fall. Right now the top of the draft is still getting sorted out, with three unpredictable teams picking in the Top 5, featuring the Nationals due to the Rizzo firing, and the Angels and Rockies being, well, the Angels and Rockies, so it's hard to get a read on who might actually be available at 17 at this point.
  8. Fedde's throwing trash up and Dansby is juuuuuuust missing on the foul balls. Sigh.
  9. Reminiscent of the year DLee won the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove, but Pujols won the MVP.
  10. Guessing this will be a delayed start due to weather, but they should get this one in without issue.
  11. TIL I learned new words. Anyone want to expound on pronate/supinate and how they relate to pitching?
  12. In fairness, Taillon with the wind blowing out isn't exactly a promising formula for success, either. I have a feeling they'll hold steady to evaluate the staff and everyone's health up to the ASB, and then we'll probably see a move coming out of it.
  13. I feel like this post could have been a letter to the editor at any point over the last 70 years.
  14. I get that Pressly needs to earn his way back, but I'd rather it be in mop up situations.
  15. It's the curse of picking where they're picking; their options will either be lottery tickets with lingering injury/production/inexperience questions or productive college guys whose realistic best case scenario involves a career on the bench or in the bullpen. The only way I'm going to be upset this draft is if they pull another Hayden Simpson-esque reach and pinch pennies in later rounds. Otherwise, I can't get mad if they pop someone like Aloy or Kilen.
  16. It's not, but (as @Jason Ross mentioned elsewhere) 3Bs are hitting 96 wRC+ league-wide this season. This isn't like 2006, when A-Ram's 3.7 fWAR was 11th among MLB 3Bs. For whatever reason, the position has taken a complete nosedive league-wide.
  17. This is the crux of the issue with Shaw. League-wide, 3B is basically a black hole, and the teams that have good 3Bs likely won't deal them. In context, Shaw is basically a below average 3B, even though his offensive production has been decidedly bad. The problem here is, it's not like you're gaining 4-5 WAR by replacing Shaw going forward. You're instead likely to gain 1-2 WAR over the rest of the season, which isn't bad, but it raises the question of whether the Cubs would be better off dedicating those resources elsewhere in trades.
  18. On the one hand, it's really good to see these guys succeeding at their levels and showing positive numbers that aren't just based on luck/level. On the other hand, there are definitely enough warts with each to temper expectations.
  19. What would a recent comp be for a trade for a guy like Gore? If you told me he could be had for a package built around something like Brown/Wiggins/Caissie, I'd give it serious thought, but I get the feeling that deal might need another name or two to be realistic.
  20. The Smith/Shaw comparisons in these upcoming game threads are going to drive me insane.
  21. I fully expect them to trade the #55 pick for a bag of magic beans.
