  1. How I imagine Mark Prior's conversation with Dusty Baker on the topic of pitcher health would go:
  2. Kinda unsurprising for San Francisco since they were pushing hard for Ohtani and Soto. Sneaky good haul for Boston, too.
  3. I'm getting annoyed at the offense, but will gladly take the W and 3/4 against a better than expected Pirates team.
  4. He's making a damn good argument for being the best prospect in the system and could end the season in the "best pitching prospect in baseball" conversation.
  5. The Best: 1) There has been a lot of positive development with depth arms in the system that could be relief/back end rotation types even if things don't go super great for them. 2) Wiggins looks like an ace in the making. 3) Mo Baller and Jefferson Rojas are legitimate Top 50 prospects in baseball. 4) Jonathan Long is a thing, but how much of a thing is up for debate. 5) Eli Lovich might also be a thing. The Annoying: 1) Pretty much everything else. There's still time, and we might be seeing recent turnarounds from Caissie and Alcantara, but TBD.
  6. I'm happy for the development we've seen with Mo and Long, but holy eff would I feel better about the deadline if Alcantara and Caissie were mashing.
  7. Anything can happen in the MLB Draft, but that seems unlikely. For those who have access, any notables among the guys who were available?
  8. Just let him be. He was a grumpy gus in 2016 and he eventually came around.
  9. Jerry agrees to sell the team to Justin Ishiba...at some point in the next decade. Yay? Kind of an odd announcement to make.
  10. The problem to me is the "interesting" part of that statement. The only healthy SP we have firing bullets at the moment is Wiggins, while it seems like the remainder of the guys who are successfully pitching are RHPs who work in the low 90s and seem to rely a lot on arm angles and deception. Don't get me wrong, it's great that these guys are bolstering the depth in this system, but when the 90th percentile outcome for your career is Colin Rea, well, yeah.
  11. It might be worth a longer thinkpiece, but, would it be worth the Cubs' while to extend Busch through his arb years and into his first year of free agency? He's a shade on the older side (27) and usually needs a platoon partner for certain matchups, but he's been a reliable 1B with tools that should age well. He should be a 3-4 WAR player in his prime if he keeps his production up. I'll grant that it shouldn't be a priority on the same level as Tucker and PCA, but it's food for thought.
  12. You can make similar arguments in favor of college hitters who could be available. Brendan Summerhill, Gavin Kilen, and Wehiwa Aloy all seem to fit the profiles of guys the Cubs tend to draft, and you can even include Ike Irish if the Cubs see his profile as Schwarber-like.
  13. Anyone know if Shaw is PPI eligible? I know there's a requirement for the player to be on the roster for a certain period of games, so I'm wondering if the Cubs managed to keep him in the minors long enough to get right, but not so long that they'd forfeit a bonus draft pick if he ends up winning NLROY.
  14. I know it's baseball. I know it's dumb. But still. Godfuckingdamnit.
  15. I don't want to turn this game off because Cubs/Reds always seem to be wildly swingy games and this team could easily rattle off 6 runs in an inning. At the same time, yeesh.
  16. The quiet killer lurking for the rotation is the IP limit they're bound to hit with Horton and Brown. I generally agree that a TOR guy probably won't happen in this market, but they're going to need good enough arms either to spell Horton and Brown to keep them fresh for September/October, or to pick up the slack when they get moved to the bullpen or shut down late in the season. Maybe there are internal solutions with guys like Assad and Birdsell, but a rotation of Shota/Boyd/Rea isn't going far in the playoffs.
  17. To me, it comes down to in-game power since he seems destined for 1B/LF/DH in the majors. There's some power there, and arguably he could tweak his approach and swing to generate more power, but you also don't want to muck with what's been working for him.
  18. You mean he might fall to the Cubs due to injury?
  19. Palencia is like if Joe Borowski could hit triple digits. A win is a win, so *shrug*.
  20. Looking the game log over, I don't think Horton's had a single swinging strike on his fastball all day. Credit where it's due for getting through 5 IP so far with some quality pitching, but I expected a bit better from his fastball.
