    So Belgium is down 2 late to Senegal. The US recently beat Senegal in a pre-WC friendly for whatever that's worth, but Belgium seems old and slow, something our team should hypothetically be able to exploit. Not sure if its a good thing or bad thing for Senegal to go through if we're able to advance tonight.

    The Cubs have had innings today where they've scored: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 runs

    The Cubs have 15 runs on 10 hits and 6 walks. Much better than a couple weeks ago when we were saying they have like 2 runs with 14 baserunners

    So who is getting the save opportunity today for the Cubs? 😅

    Yeah, I've been through 35 baseball seasons or so, definitely understand there are peaks and valleys. I just don't remember past Cubs teams having such tall peaks and low valleys that extend as long as they seem to do. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like it's a hallmark of this core of players.

    I just can't get over how streaky this offense is. A couple weeks ago Rockies pitchers with ERAs over 8 were shutting us down. It seemed impossible to envision a hit with RISP. Now its like, 'oh look Dansby has 8 HR and 37 RBI over the last week, wonder if that's an all time record'

    Yep, that's what I meant. I was explaining to my kids what a balk was when the first one happened by Milwaukee and told them it only happens maybe 4-5 times a year, so funny that they got to see another one so soon after.

    I’m nervous for tonight, especially after seeing some giants struggle against weaker opponents. I think we can make it to the QF, but also I just don’t want to be the first host country knocked out lol.

    I think so too but it also feels like one of those NCAA tournament matchups where everyone is predicting an upset because it just seems obvious and then the game starts and you realize that oh yeah the higher seeded team is actually noticeably better. Obviously Azteca is the biggest wild card though.

    Interesting signing. Clearly not tanking in year 1. Have no idea how good they are going to be though. Powell was an All-Star last year for the first time, but I haven't really watched a ton of NBA lately so I don't know his game that well. It sounds like he hits 3s though which is a need.

    Nah they’re our rivals. Just like I wouldn’t want to see the Cardinals in the World Series or Packers in the Super Bowl. Nothing against Mexico, I respect their passion for soccer, but I’m not going to cheer for their success

    Would be so awesome to see Mexico somehow go down tonight because I just can't see England winning at Azteca. Really would rather not see Mexico in the QFs.

    It's probably because I didn't play soccer growing up so I don't have the muscle memory (though have gotten passable playing with my kids!), but I've always said PKs in soccer and game winning FG attempts are the most pressure filled moments in sports. Reasons for PKs: -PKs on average have a very high success rate, something like 80%. The number is high enough that the fans expect you to make them just about every time so if you make it, you were supposed to, if you miss you completely choked. -It's literally just you and the keeper all alone one on one with 60,000+ fans watching you play mind games trying to out think them, completely different mindset than the 120 minutes that were just played -A miss can dramatically shift your teams chances and overall mindset (though as we saw today in both PKs, they can be recovered from) -A high profile miss is replayed for years and you are forever associated with it Clutch FG kicks are similar, except literally your only job on the field is to make those kicks and what you do can validate or erase what 50+ teammates have done all game to get you in that position. And even worse for FG kicks several things can go wrong but if that kick is attempted and missed, the blame goes squarely to the kicker even if the snapper or holder screwed something up (Laces out Dan). I could never do either of those things for a living.

    Yeah that one is more 'sweet we get to watch France play' but who knows.

    Didn’t Happ lose a ball near that same spot earlier in the game? Would be funny if that’s the ball that came out when he hit the ivy

    The Cubs are now 3-1 against the Padres this year with 2 to play. Early to be thinking about tiebreakers but another win would clinch the tiebreaker over San Diego should it come to that.
