Still concerned about the starting pitching. I don't know how Dempster will fare as a starter. But I like him better as a starter than a reliever. What is pleasantly surprising is the team patience at the plate. Has Lou or Perry been talking with the players about this? I always thought that if the team could be a little more patient, they could really be an offensive force. They are too talented not to be able to put up a bunch of runs. With that said, this team wanted a hot start and got it. I think this will help settle the team down and take away some of the pressure. Did Soto pull off the ball tonight? -
That's what I find odd: why doesn't he wait a few years so that he can really get paid (but he will be 34 when his contract is out and I doubt that he will get much of anything after that). He already sort of made this mistake once. Would the Bears add on to his present contract or tear apart his present one? If they tear it apart, how much of a signing bonus might he get? I just wonder if Urlacher knows that his skills are declining, he knows his back is really hurting him, and that he is trying to milk to cow once more. If so, the Bears obviously know this which is why they only want to offer him more more year on the four he already has left.

So because Urlacher can't keep his pants up, the Bears are obligated to pay him more? Some players demand more because they are good citizens. I don't think you can have it both ways. If he wanted to save money to help pay for his illegitimate kids, he would stop chartering aircraft from the local airport to fly to Vegas. If Urlacher wanted to get more money, assuming that he is going to stay healthy, he would wait a few years for a new contract because the salaries will rise with time. Then he won't be in the situation he is in now. I just wonder if he had kept his rookie contract, he might have made more money because he would have signed his new contract when he was in his prime instead of entering into his prime.

After listening to Mulligan's show on the radio today, he is adamant that Urlacher's agent, obviously speaking for Urlacher, did float the trade idea to the Bears and the idea that Brian could threaten to retire. When Urlacher says that he never said any of the purported stuff, he is only saying that he himself did not say it. FYI, he also says that his back, while improved form last year, is still giving him problems. It should also be taken into consideration that Urlacher was the only defensive player ever to have his rookie contract shredded in order to get another larger contract. It's not like the Bears haven't been good to him. If Urlacher had been playing out of his mind like he used to, I could see how he should get a new contract. But his skills are declining. Last year, he wasn't even voted in the top 5 NFC linebackers by the other players for the Pro-Bowl. The Bears offered to extend his contract by a year. It seems to me that Urlacher is jealous and greedy and is looking for an extension that he doesn't deserve.

Haas should have gotten more time at the end of the year. He sure looked good in preseason, but I wish I could have seen him in the regular season.

Once the checks stop coming, it is weird how people change their mind. Ask Briggs and "I'll never play for the Bears again and I'll hold out..." Urlacher would also have to pay back a good portion of his signing bonus if he retires. But what a malcontent. You signed the contract Brian. You were getting paid more than anyone else at the time. Now it is uneven the other way. But who cares. If he knew how to sell a product he could have made even more. Blame yourself you big winer. Lovie said that he doesn't play hurt people and Urlacher agreed so Brian will have a hard time with the injury excuse. How in the world does Briggs not like his new deal?

What would the Bears have to give up to get McFadden? What about trading Urlacher? Briggs can play middle and Jamar Williams could be the other linebacker. Urlacher's best days are behind him, especially considering his back. What about drafting Mendenhal from Illinois. He won't make it to the second round will he if the Beras take an offensive lineman in the first? Man Benson was a bust, but I was one who wnated Mike Williams. That was even more of a bust.

Murton wasn't called up, from what I hear, because Patterson is more fit to be a leadoff man and that is the glaring hole right now.

Thinking you hit a homerun when it really is a double increases the chances you get thrown out at second. It is one of my pet peeves. Would your head explode if our team looked like this LF: Manny Ramirez CF: Ken Griffey Jr. RF: Barry Bonds 3B: Aramis Ramirez 2B: Alfonso Soriano SS: Alex Rodriguez 1B: Ryan Howard C: Mike Piazza No it wouldn't. We are not comparing one player with another. We are comparing what one player could do compared to what they same player could do if he ran harder.

Heh, that was my immediate reaction to this. This was my thought too. I really doubt it matters much really. Sori will be back in 2 weeks and the club will continue to roll on the back of Lee. At least we can enjoy an much more balanced lineup while he is out Does anyone know what the Cubs record was with Soriano on the DL last year? 10-13 I believe

Because Z was running? and any runner would have hustled to try and beat the double play. Now we're catching on! So hustling does help a team win. it doesn't hurt. now, getting on base, hitting home runs, pitching well, and playing good defense helps a team win about 5 million times more. i'll take a slow runner who gets on base and hits home runs over a hustler who sucks at getting on base and doesn't hit for power any day of the week. but you're right. hustling CAN help a team win. but it's about 10th on the list of things that help a team win. I'll take a fast runner who gets on base and hits homers over anyone. I just want Soriano and Ramirez to be better players. Lou has said that the Cubs need to get out to a fast start. I agree. That's why you hustle which can win you games. Of course it is 10th on the list. But doing the little things can win you games. I don't think the Cubs are going to blowout the Brewers. Last year the division came down to one game. Some games are decided by hustling.

There is running, just not very much of it. So when it is your chance to run, make the most of it.

Johnson is a platoon player. Look at his L/R splits. One thing this injury should NOT do is parlay a platoon player into an everyday spot. I think the real reason why Murton isn't called up is because he has very similar splits as Reed. Which begs the question, why did we sign Reed when we already have Murton? The Lou factor. I don't think Lou likes him. Reed has a little more pop than Murton. How do you figure? Reed has a .409 career SLG, Murton a .455 You are right. Murton homers once every 35 or so at bats. Johnson every 50. Back to the platoon thing. There are only three everyday OF players. If one gets hurt, someone who is not an everyday player has to play. Usually it is a platoon player.
