  1. You're a freshman in college, he's a university professor.
  2. Shelton went undrafted through 25 rounds of my keeper league.
  3. Gutsy! I pick mine all at pretty much random, just grab a team that looks good to me, then pick the guy I've got a hunch about. I do it all a week in advance, so I'd be kicking myself if I changed it tonight then Jones goes on to get his first hit tomorrow.
  4. Yes, in fact, he is terrible. In a recent Baseball Prospectus article, he appeared as the #12 worst offensive baseball player since 1900. He is an ideal late-innings replacement or backup shortstop, but he shouldn't be starting. I don't think anyone here hates him - it's not that he kicks babies or eats puppies - but, like lots here say, I hate the way Dusty uses him. Neifi shouldn't start, but when he does, he shouldn't be anywhere near the 2 slot. The problem with BPRO's statement is people misinterpret it. It by no means is saying Neifi is the 12th worst player at offense in baseball's history. It is saying that he has cost teams the 12th most offensively in baseball history. That is to say, he's managed to accumulate enough PAs over the years that his offense has been the 12th most detrimental of all time. There have been 1000s of players in history who were worse offensively.
  5. Jeter bumps it to 6. Next up......Jacque Jones
  6. Baez went in the 20th round of my league.
  7. I think it's too early to try and trade Shelton. If you go out pursuing a trade now, people will know you're trying to take advantage of his hot streak. You're best off waiting a month or so before trying to deal him when people will be more convinced of his true ability.
  8. Good. Hopefully we'll see those bastards in the national championship game next April. If they're returning their entire team, what makes you think you'd beat them next year? I'd bet a lot of money on neither team being in the championship next year.
  9. He's soft. Seriously though, how random was that CG SHO vs. the Reds in '03?
  10. I'd like to hear Jake's thoughts...no that's just mean. Sorry Jake.
  11. I'm quite glad I traded Ryan Freel earlier today.
  12. There's a difference between holding a conference and checking to see if somebody with a better view is making a safe call.
  13. I equate Thomas and Noah to an athlete draft in baseball, while Aldridge is a numbers guy.
  14. Pitcher abuse for Weaver? Sitting around for the 3 run homer for Baylor?? How many times did he bunt in the 1st inning? The correct answer is every [expletive] GAME
  15. So is the answer to never spend money on pitching? That seems a lot more reasonable than saying trade Prior now because 2 years down the road he'll be making a lot of money and there's a chance he won't be healthy. The answer is to trade declining assets if it's reasonable to believe they won't return to form and invest in pitchers you can be confident will be healthy and consistent like Zambrano for example. But isn't Zambrano a pretty big risk considering the high pitch totals he's racked up the past few years? Prior's managed to avoid the high pitch counts over that time, so he may be a better bet going forward.

  17. Corey Patterson molests kittens. Orphaned kittens...with diseases.
  18. You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but I see no evidence that he is weak-bodied, frail or brittle. You've done nothing to persuade me. He's a healthy young man who places an enormous strain on his arm in the course of pitching. Is Josh Beckett a wimp because of his blisters? What about Gagne and his multiple elbow surgeries (I believe he's on #3)? Kerry Wood? Jason Isringhausen? Injuries happen. Patricularly to pitchers. No, they're not wimps, they're liabilities at their contracts. Prior isn't at that point yet, but he will be in a couple years. Better to trade him before that happens. That's if you think this will happen every year. I do not.
  19. Seems wrong to me as well. Once that 3rd out is signaled, the ball's dead to all fielders and baserunners, meaning to determine what would've happened had it been called correctly pretty impossible. Yes, Doug Eddings I'm looking at you.
  20. Sigh, I really want Aldridge.
  21. Don Baylor was hitting coach for Cox before getting hired. I can't remember who else was considered for the job around Baylor's hire(other than Gardenhire who I'm iffy on), but the Dusty hiring had no retreads talked about/interviewed IIRC.
  22. Somebody mentioned the serious air around Prior's early injury, with nobody saying it was just a strain. 1. I don't think there was any sign from anyone in the Cubs organization that it was something serious. 2. Could you imagine the backlash if the Cubs went out and said it was just something minor and he'd be fine? You still had people jumping down the Cubs throat when they didn't give any indication about how serious it might be. Everybody ASSUMED the worst. Even today you have people complaining about the way the Cubs handled it, hinting that it's worse than they're saying.
  23. I picked Matt Holliday today, which should push mine to 5, but the game is showing him at 0 for 2.
  24. Prior's arm could fall off and people would rip on him for not sewing it back on and pitching the next day. It's nobody's business but Prior's and his doctor's to tell whether he's truly injured or not. How anyone can call him soft after taking that line drive off his elbow and not being done for the year just blows my mind.
