  1. They wouldn't have gotten it within 3 unless they actually made the 2 point conversion in the 4th quarter-if they didn't make it in the 2nd, how were they going to do it in the 4th? I agree they should have gone for the extra point early, but they still would have been in the same situation later. Agree that they would've had to make it eventually the way the score turned out, but the basis of jjg's point is completely true.(Like I said at halftime) If you're going for 2 that early you're basically saying your team is not going to make it to the end zone again the rest of the game. If you don't think your team is going to score a TD in an entire half then it really doesn't matter what you're doing on extra points. Unless you're down by some ridiculous amount, it does not make sense to go for 2 before the 4th quarter. There's way too much scoring to come that you can easily wind up costing yourself a difference in a 1 possession and 2 possession game late because you didn't take a free point 3 minutes into the 2nd half.
  2. I'd wait until you find out whether he sucks or not. It takes a pretty liberal definition of the word sucks to come up with a scenario where Soriano "sucks" next year.
  3. Too early for 2.
  4. I'm sorry, they don't get worse than Angel. What would make the worst crew? Hernandez, Froemming, Bucknor.. who else? That guy everyone hates in Anaheim? Doug Eddings.
  5. Had it with rum for the first time last year at our Christmas party, delicious. Also delicious without it. But yeah, you can only have it like 5 times before you get sick of drinking eggs.
  6. I'm still not understanding the direction of this rant. The fact that the Cubs farm system sucks has nothing to do with buying free agents. The best you can come up with in terms of blockage is your opinion that Derosa is going to block Patterson with no factual basis behind it. Am I enamored with the Derosa signing? Of course not. But I do like having somebody else aroudn rather than just hoping Theriot established a new level of talent(And I'm a Theriot fan.) If Patterson stays on the path he's headed, he will unseat Derosa, I'd guarantee it. This isn't Dusty Baker's Cubs anymore. Hendry had a 66 win team last year and is improving it through free agency so that the farm system won't be depleted. This rant would make a lot more sense if if it was coming after prospects were cleared out for somebody mediocre. Yes, Soriano and Derosa were overpaid, possibly severely, but when you have a 66 win team and are a looking to improve soon it's what you do. As I said before, short of trading the studs for top prospects, nothing with the farm system is going to change the face of the major league team in the next 3 years. Re: Spending money on Latin America guys, didn't the Cubs just shell out a lot of money on Suarez recently? It seems like a good first step to me.
  7. Congrats. -Signed the rest of the world.
  8. So let's say Notre Dame beats USC, and Florida and Arkansas lose their games. Does ND really deserve to go ahead of Michigan just because they didn't play OSU during the regular season?? In theory it make sense, but there's far too much noise in a college football season to use something like that as a guideline. To be fair, they owe ND one after the travishamockery in 1993. I think it would be very interesting to see the voters be forced to choose between the head to head logic (send Mich to the title game) or the no-rematch logic (send ND) if they were the only viable options (Ark loses to LSU and then beats UF example). If this scenario happens UM should go to the title game over ND and it shouldn't even be a debate. I'm not for a rematch in the title game but that sentiment is more relevant if USC and/or UF both end up with 1 loss. But head to head takes precedence over not wanting a rematch. This is why Arkansas has no chance at the title game unless USC loses. to UCLA after beating ND
  9. I believe I mentioned it long before this Winter, so yes, had they cont'd the path they were on pre '03, I doubt they would've had to spend 125 mil to improve a 66 win club. Random point, if anyone mentions Hill, Choi, etc. Who did Choi and Hill net the Cubs? The ability to trade prospects is almost as important (the only reason it is less is b/c of financial reason, but the risk of failure is obviously greater w/those prospects). The farm system has been in free fall long before this past Summer. I guess I really don't understand the point then. It's not like the Cubs just aren't drafting anyone when their turn comes up. They've done a poor job developing talent at the minor leagues, that's the cause of spending big money on FAs, not the effect.
  10. Another perspective is that forgetting about 2007 and reloading for 2008 is increasingly looking like it would have been the smart thing to do. We could have sat on the sidelines watching the desperate win-now teams saddle themselves with these crippling albatross contracts. That way we could saddle ourselves with crippling albatross contracts for 2008. The past 3 offseasons the prevailing wisdom among many is that their team should wait out the crazy contract demands for a weak FA class, and pay up in next offseason. The problem is this offseason where there's loads of FA talent at reasonable prices is never going to come.
  11. Explain how this winter we're supposed to build a team by developing prospects. Unless your plan is to trade everyone worth anything on the team for prospects, there's nothing else to do. When the Cubs are trading prospects for mediocrities(HI JUAN!!) that's the time to complain. The fact that they handed out a big FA contract really doesn't affect our weak farm system at all.
  12. I am shocked it didn't go to Jeter.
  13. He should fire his agent.
  14. So let's say Notre Dame beats USC, and Florida and Arkansas lose their games. Does ND really deserve to go ahead of Michigan just because they didn't play OSU during the regular season?? In theory it make sense, but there's far too much noise in a college football season to use something like that as a guideline.
  15. I disagree. I think if Arkansas runs the table in the SEC (or Florida wins the SEC title) they should go in over USC. Yes, Arkansas lost to USC, I know, but the SEC is a better conference that the Pac-10 and USC lost to an unranked team. This is pure madness. USC BEAT ARKANSAS. I don't see any scenario where 2 teams have the same record, little to no difference in schedules, and 1 team beat the other on the football field, how in the hell does the team that lost by 36 AT HOME get to play instead of the team who won?
  16. I just want to once again state that the only way Arkansas deserves to jump ND and USC is if USC beats ND then UCLA beats USC. So Arkansas will not deserve to jump both teams.
  17. keep reading. That's 9 runs. That doesn't make up the 11 run difference AND the contract differences. Keep in mind I used a VERY conservative projection on Julio Lugo. Yeah I see the point was brought up later on. I went out to eat, came back 2 hours later and there were 20 more pages. However, replacement value doesn't have to be Izturis, I'd venture to guess Theriot would put up better #s than Izturis's career avgs(I'm guessing the stats may not bear this out, but I happen to think Theriot's dropping switch hitting really has made a big difference for him)
  18. Probably is the key word there. You, nor I know what could have been done and how much money could have/have not been spent. It isn't our money, if the Trib wants to spend it then let them. Actually I am certain it could have been done. The Cubs got an EqA of roughly .208 from their SSs last season in 486 outs. Julio Lugo's career EqA is .265. The difference between those two over 486 outs is roughly 41 runs. The actual should be higher because for the most part Lugo's been a better hitter the last couple of seasons. The Cubs got an EqA of roughly .250 from their CFers last season in 526 outs. Alfonso Soriano's career EqA is .287. The difference between those two over 526 outs is roughly 30 runs. Julio Lugo could be had for what, 32 million max? Soriano was had for what, 100 million more. You can say shove EqA in your ass all you want. You can do this with any stat and find a similar outcome. But comparing to what SS did last year isn't really the proper comparison. It makes more sense to compare to what could reasonably be expected out of SS this year, which is a hell of a lot better than .208 just on a dead cat bounce.
  19. Same for me: as much as it hurts, let's go Michigan and let's go USC tomorrow! I think Ohio State and USC will probably win, but the difference between the teams is so slight that the games could really turn out in just about every different way possible. I can't believe I'm rooting for Michigan and USC in the same weekend. Just to put a cherry on top of the madness I'm rooting for F$U too. This is probably the most surreal college FB weekend of my life, and ND's not really even involved. FSU is next weekend.
  20. Provolone is a godsend. And swiss is terrible.
  21. I was militant against skim milk for the longest time, now it's all I ever drink.
  22. only if you'll miss him if another team grabs him when he's derostered. In the meantime, Buck gets rewarded for his years of effort in the minors with at least a taste of the bigs and a chance to show himself on the big stage. Well in a vaccum it's a fine move, I just fear Hendry keeping him on the 40 man.
  23. The rostering of Buck Coats was so stupid.
  24. Are you on a quest to have crappy pitching? Marquis and Meche are not good. "Not good" is being far too kind. They're pretty horrid. I can see cases for Westbrook, Lilly, Padilla... but Meche, Marquis, and Batista should be nowhere near a pro ball club (except for the cardinals). The way you guys want to throw money at hitter's, there is going to absolutley no money to spend for pitching. I would hate to see the Cubs go into next year having to out slug their opponents 10-8 every game. That is not the way you build a baseball team. The only thing signing Marquis does to change that scenario is that the Cubs would have to outslug their opponents 12-10 instead.
