  1. Wait, who says Wood has a stubborn attitude and questionable work ethic? wood has refused to change his delivery (which probably has alot to do with his inability to stay healthy) for several years now. i guess he made some progress on that front this year but it looks like too little too late. as far as his work ethic goes, that is an assumption on my part. he seems to have gotten out of shape the last few years and gained some weight. not every pitcher can be like clemens but he is way too young to be slacking off in the conditioning department imo. Okay. I just wanted to clear up that was opinion based on your part. I've never heard anything about him "refusing" to change his delivery (in fact, I've heard the opposite) and have never heard anyone publicly question his work ethic. What I have seen is a pattern of arm abuse dating back to high school. Most of that stemming from coaches, and likely some stemming from his mechanics, as you mentioned.
  2. Great article, BK. Keep up the good work.
  3. Well, I don't think they will sign Walker if Hendry stays around, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't.
  4. As much as I'd love to see it happen, I'm not expecting it. Hendry signed Jones for a reason, and my guess is he feels justified in doing so with his recent play. Unfortunately, it's not likely to continue (especially for two more seasons).
  5. Wait, who says Wood has a stubborn attitude and questionable work ethic?
  6. hahahaha.... kill me
  7. 307 is fine for me. If yur in chicago or around, try channel 9. weird. it's coming in on my regular receiver in the bedroom, but not my HD receiver in the living room. it just disapeared. "Channel Not Available" I should probably be greatful.
  8. ummmm...is anyone else with DirectTV having trouble getting WGN? It seems to be vacant from it's normal spot on channel 307.
  9. I've got no interest in seeing Pie in the leadoff spot next year. I'd rather have Walker leadoff and play 2nd, play Soriano in LF and platoon Murton with Jones in RF. Agreed. Walker 2B Cedeno SS Lee 1B Soriano LF Ramirez 3B Barrett C Jones/Murton LF Pie CF (IF you think he's ready to be called up) Note: I'm not advocating trading for Soriano.
  10. The wheel of excuses turn and turn when it stops, the blame we learn Dusty Baker Wrote: Whoever had "Blame the kids" wins the pool. Everyone else is a loser. Let me get this straight: in 2003 Dusty won with two starters who were both 22 and several relievers who were considered "young." Hee Sop played regularly (at the beginning) and was considered "young." So it wasn't a problem then, was it? And can someone PLEASE explain to me how we were a young team last year? I hate Dusty. I hate his excuses. I hate how the minute you put ONE player younger than 55 on his roster, the team is officially young. Need help packing? I'm your man. Not to mention that Dusty had ample oppurtunity to play Cedeno and Murton last year and chose not to. Besides, Pierre, Ramirez and Neifi are not "young" and they're all doing a pretty good job of hurting the team with their lack of production right now (with Dusty's help).
  11. I'd like to see Guzman, Marmol and Hill all get multiple turns in the rotation at some point through the rest of the season. They might also consider shutting down Marshall (or at least cutting him back) at some point.
  12. those back spasms must have been an ongoing problem since the beginning of rusch's career, because he's never been any good. Okay, Dusty. That still doesn't explain why you gave him the start on Friday.
  13. I've been away a while. Is Guzman really sitting in the bullpen right now? Yes, which is what makes Rusch's start even more mind-boggling.
  14. The correct answer is to send down Guzman and call up Weurtz if you insist on having a 38 man pitching staff.
  15. This is already the greatest game thread of all time.
  16. But the only thing you're really pointing too is that he's injured. He's 38 years old. He's been big his entire career and didn't really have a big jump at any one point in time. Besides, when he's healthy, his power numbers are still there. I don't know if he's ever juiced, but I don't really see any evidence that he has either. On the other hand, I see a few things that seem to contradict steroid use (outspoken advocate for testing, continued power, and no real jump in power or size).
  17. And name the teams that abuse their pitchers as much as the Cubs. When you lead the world in pitcher abuse and suffer a series of pitching injuries, it doesn't take much to find a correlation. It just points to Dusty, Hendry, etc. refusal to catch up with the rest of the baseball world. They still think pitchers shouldn't be on pitch counts because they weren't in the 60's. It's the same reason speed is at the top of the lineup, and the reason they only go after "toolsy" players. I think they enjoy giving a big middle finger to all the "new school" people. Note: I hate the term "new school", but I coudn't figure out what else to say.
  18. I'm thinking the Lee injury has saved Dusty's job. Even if (when) they fall into last place, the Lee injury is the excuse de jour (also adding in Prior and Wood). The thing is, this team would be terrible with or with out Lee, so it shouldn't matter. Don't tell that to the national media though. Any time somebody talks about the Cubs' struggles this year, they point no further then the injury to Lee. Now Hendry is in a interesting/difficult position (which he caused). He can't very well sign Dusty to a one-year extension to see what he can do with a "healthy" team. On the other hand, how can he justify signing Dusty to a multi-year extension with the way this team has played? IMO, he can't justify extending him at all, but he probably will. In fact, I don't see how he can justify not firing him now, but it's not happening.
  19. As other's have said, I really don't know why Pierre and Rusch would want Baker gone. They are lucky to be playing. If I was to guess: Walker Maddux Zambrano's arm Prior Wood The only reason I leave Murton off is because he is a "rookie" and probably wouldn't have the balls to say he wanted Baker gone, even if it was "off the record". I would also consider Nevin (to get more PT) or maybe Hairston (if this dates back pre-trade). This is obviously just a complete freaking guess and none of us really knows (if it's even true at all).
  20. While I agree that Z's pitch count is alarming, it doesn't sound like he's "hurt" to me. I would think that "dead arm" or "heavy arm" or whatever you want to call it is pretty common at some point during the long season. I do agree it would be advisable to get him an extra day or two of rest if possible.
  21. Hasn't he been one of the more outspoken critics of steroids in the past? Not that it means he didn't do it, but I seem to remember him throwing a fit saying everyone was juicing (except him) back in the late 90's.
  22. I saw it. It was nauseating. This team is not one Derrek Lee away from being good.
  23. Dusty actually said that? I'm impressed Until of course Neifi got up there and hit left-handed... BRILLIANT!!
  24. Neither. Send Marmol back down and let him continue to get starts. While you're at it, send Guzman down and free Micheal Weurtz.
  25. I really didn't think I could hate Ozzie Guillen any more then I already did. I was wrong.
