  1. No, it says he looks at several that are out there but relies on his own internal formulas for actual usage. CubinNY is railing against the concept of scale in WAR. At least I hope he is, because nitpicking a specific weighting of inputs would be a really weird thing considering that there are multiple public forms of WAR we see used all the time. The quote from Mozeliak is pretty clear in that they use WAR as a concept, they just use proprietary inputs to try to get the variant they are most comfortable with. I'm with TT on this, yes Mozeliak is saying they don't use a WAR that we/public knows. But his quote, at least to me and TT, seems to assert that they have a WAR like model/formula that attempts to measure/accomplish what the WAR's we know about does and they do base decisions off of that. Their "WAR" just has a few more/less/different inputs of data and/or weighs things more/less than the public WAR's do. Debating about WAR being something that people use as the most important measure to make decisions is a completely different discussion, but it's pretty clear that the Cardinals are using something very close to the WAR valuation models that we know about to make decisions. Which was the initial statement that was being questioned about GM's/FO's not even thinking about/using WAR.
  2. Wow, that's interesting to hear. He has to be the highest on Candelario of the main prospect guys. Not too surprised he has Vizcaino in the top 100 he has always liked him and is definitely in the camp that TJS isn't that big of a deal anymore to come back from.
  3. Because you can't be on the cover of a video game and still be in college... :banghead: I knew that :banghead: Since this is open to public vote, will Denard win in a landslide? Unless it just splits up regionally, I don't see a lot of names on that list that are well known. If you asked me what team EJ Manuel was on, I wouldn't have been able to tell you. Of course, this was probably Te'o's cover to lose this year..... Te'o is a better candidate than Eifert. But this always has been and should be a Denard cover. He's a perfect video game QB. Should have put Saban on it, all things considered, with that [expletive] list of candidates, restrictions on not allowing current NCAA players and the Te'o fiasco.
  4. We are about a week away from spring training starting. Figured it deserves its own thread, especially for all the articles/info that is going to come out during it so we don't have multiple threads started. Looks like Garza is on track to have a normal schedule this spring, threw a pain free bullpen session yesterday. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/14652/matt-garza-throws-pain-free-bullpen-session
  5. Law's top 100 is out today, think most were aware, when it's out can someone please post his top 100 and then the write ups he has on the Cubs who make it, thanks!
  6. There are plenty of problems with WAR and I'd wager not many teams who are using advanced statistics to help evaluate performance put much weight to it. You would be very, very wrong. Yeah, most teams probably have a WAR like formula/valuation system in place. From an interview with Mozeliak today on ESPN
  7. That's a really good trade for the Astros. Carter is a good potential DH for them
  8. Brandon Webb retired today. Couldn't ever come back from that shoulder injury. One of the best, if not the best, sinkers of all time. That pitch was incredible. He had a run from 05-08 where he posted fWAR's of 5.3, 7.0, 6.9, 6.0 and had a .46 HR/9 in 2007.
  9. Didn't have a whole lot to say. His analysis wasn't very in depth for any of the organizations... Looks like he will have more of a write up on the organization later this week, I assume by AL/NL top tens he means systems and not players. As he usually writes up commentary on all of the top 100 guys, I think. Should be interesting to see how many Cubs he has in his top 100, 5 is higher than anyone else has ranked our system so I wouldn't be surprised if he has an extra guy or two in his top 100 compared to other rankings (think he definitely will have Vizcaino in his top 100 possibly Paniagua with those statements). Also, is the Cuban Toolshed really something Soler is being called by people? I kind of like it.
  10. I noticed that the first time they replayed it during the game. I thought that is what the officials were looking at when they went to the monitors. Can they still go back and suspend him? I'm not 100% sure but I think they could still review it and do so. Yeah, I am not sure either. Thought maybe since nothing was called in the game there might be some weird rules that they can't go back or something

  12. I laughed
  13. I agree, the difference from here on between guys is pretty close and like you said votes should be close/people likely will lose interest. But I'd like to go to 50
  14. Hopefully him and Baez will both reach Tennessee this year. If neither of them make it, even if it's just for like a monthish at the end of the year, something will have gone wrong(either injuries and/or poor performance/development). They seem to be pushing guys both pretty hard. It's going to suck having them in Daytona and facing the inevitable rain outs/delays happening on a weekly basis.
  15. Manning wins Comeback POY, just saw the scroll on ESPN
  16. 3 guys with double doubles (Taj, Deng, Butler all pts-reb) almost 4 with Nate, was 2 assists shy.
  17. Peterson wins OPOY and MVP
  18. How easy is this course they are playing on this week? Are they hitting from the Woman's tees? Phil is -23, 2nd is -18, and then there's a bunch of guys around -14 to -16
  19. Yeah, doubt he gets more than a handful of ab's/innings in actual games, it can't hurt his development working with the major league coaching staff and being around "professional" MLB players for some time.
  20. :D , that Ross contract is going to be so [expletive] bad
  21. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qsSY_I7gzb8/T4N9az_RYPI/AAAAAAAACvc/sdZXv5AIptA/s640/Arrested+Development.jpg =D> :D
  22. The woman beater market is pretty dry right now, Brett Meyers signed a few weeks ago
  23. Sosa, Prior, Wood are higher than everyone there except Grace (Sosa is higher than Grace).
  24. So Karabell/Law/Simon are giving up the Baseball Today Podcast to Buster Olney and it's going to be The Baseball Tonight Podcast with him, that is going to suck. I liked listening to that podcast, especially when Law was on talking scouting/prospects/organizational stuff. Think it's a safe assumption that Olney is going to take a different direction than those guys and will turn it into an extension of the BBTN Herp Derp Fest with useless information.
