  1. Do I remember correctly that Wells was picked up in the Rule V by the Blue Jays this year?
  2. The Cubs were in the NLCS in 2003? Strange. I have no memory of such things.
  3. As Fukudome's numbers settle back toward the .290/.380/.420 line, which was reasonably expected, and as Theriot's numbers continue to retreat, the case for Fukudome hitting 2nd will only get stronger.
  4. It was an 8 pitch at bat, not indicative of a guy who can't find the plate with a map. Do you not agree that it was a good pitch to hit? Since it was a reliever, tiring the guy out isn't an issue, and getting a pitch that good to hit probably wouldn't come again in that at bat. Taking a pitch simply because you don't think you should swing is letting the pitcher off the hook. Gotta agree. Park wasn't exactly wild.
  5. Good to see Petrick working his way back. Will be interesting to see if Hernandez's early success at a young age was influenced by his... workout regimine.
  6. Clearly he wouldn't be on the majors on any other team and/or be a platoon starter for some - otherwise other GM's would have jumped all over him the multiple times Hendry has made it abundantly clear Murton is available. Earlier this year, he all but sent a memo to every GM in baseball saying he was available. I'm not a Murton apologist, but I have to take issue with this position. Simply because Murton hasn't been traded does not mean other teams would not gladly have him on their 25-man roster, and possible give him starts in a platoon. It just means that they aren't willing to pay whatever Hendry has asked for him. To me, the proof is this: If Murton were released today, how quickly would some AL team or lowly NL team scoop him up and put him on their 25-man? I think there would be at least 10 teams looking to do just that.
  7. Probably worse to be his left than his right, correct? Given that it's the leg he pushes off with?
  8. Marmol has too much value as the guy we can turn to not just in the setup innings, but also whenever there's a high-pressure, guys-on-base situation. But at the same time, I'm not sure Wood should be our closer.
  9. I'm too lazy to put a bunch of research into it right now, but I feel relatively confident in saying that the Brandon Phillips' and Josh Hamiltons of the world are very much the exception, and not the rule. I think "crappy teams" make these kind of moves all the time - we just don't hear about them unless they blow up.
  10. He got 3rd round money last year so the Cubs think highly of him. He's got an 88-92 mph FB, a plus change (best in the system) but his curve was lagging behind a bit during his junior year in Texas. Good control too. I think he's a solid prospect considering how quickly he got to AA and if his curve progresses this season (I don't know how it has looked since he turned pro), he'll probably be a good back of the rotation starter. His rapid ascent and relative success has been very impressive.
  11. Hopefully some time soon he will learn how to throw strikes again. The Cubs could really use "good" Rich Hill. hopefully the cubs will get his mechanics back where they were last season, and leave them there. Rich is getting a bit old for this up-down business.
  12. He's gonna beat some dudes up.
  13. I still just can't get over how we were sold on the fact that this is a guy whose body type and athleticism will keep him spry and healthy deep into his later 30s. And just one year into his deal, he's got serious leg problems.
  14. Is he sufficiently stretched out?
  15. On average, guys coming over from Japan lose about 100 points of slugging, so no one should be surprised.
  16. The train is super neato, too!
  17. Agreed, but Burnett and Harden are really the only ones who fit that bill. And based on the way the A's are going, it doesnt look like Harden will be available. Burnett may be the only option unless Hill steps up again (which I see as a more likely outcome). Unfortunately, I think the Cubs' brass may see Dempster as that guy based on his early season success, and that is what worries me the most. And both of those two have serious injuries concerns.
  18. Probably, but not because of that. His control problems are to be expected, he hasn't thrown prior to his rehab began recently in about a year. It takes some time to regain control. His velocity and movement are more important at this stage of the game. The fact that he's hitting 50% strikes is an improvement (small sample size of course), and is good to see at this stage. If he can get to about 70% strikes after another 5 rehab outings, I'll be very pleased. Sorry, I didn't meant to imply my two points were related. I was more just interested in whether his parade of arm injuries would preclude him from starting again (not related to the point about his control). But I think we're on the same page.
  19. Again, the whole "handedness" of the starter resurfaces. I can't be alone in thinking that it might just be a good idea to start the 5 best pitchers, period. Marshall absolutely should get a crack at the rotation - and I'm not saying you're saying this Colt - and he shouldn't be bounced if another lefty is ready. And on a related point, Gallagher shouldn't be bounced just because Lou wants another lefty in the rotation. Dumping Marquis is the obvious solution, as has been discussed above, but I just wanted to mini-rant.
  20. So let me see if I understand. Even if Gallagher pitches well this week, he'll soon get bumped in favor of Marshall.... because we want another lefty? Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to see either Sean get a real shot in the rotation, but why do we continue to care so much which handed our pitchers are? Give me the five best, period.
  21. He's working on his give up lots of walks, hits and runs pitch so the results can be expected to be bad. I believe it's called a shlurve.
  22. That isn't a number to be crowing about, you know. If you wanted to rub it in, you would have referred us to his 1 HR given up in 47 IP or his 2.68 BB/9. :D He is 19 in high A. I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of strikeouts just yet. I'll take the 2.41 GO:AO with that strikeout rate. Grumble. I really hate seeing things like that. I guess I will just relax with the knowledge that he's only 19. Were he a Cub, the "elbow soreness" would be just around the corner.
  23. I think the Padres are quickly abandoning any intention of competing this year.
  24. There was a line about his mascara as well. :rotfl:
  25. Particularly given the kinds of injuries he's dealt with. Still, these kind of deals make sense for the smaller market teams. No risk, no reward - they certainly aren't going to get these kinds of guys on the FA market.
