  1. Yikes. That's just sad, sad, sad.
  2. Guzman's control problems following his arm troubles are interesting and unfortunate given in his younger days, he had some of the best control in the system. I'm assuming at this point he's unlikely to ever be a starter again, correct?
  3. as someone who has only seen him pitch at the big league level, i'm impressed with sean and think that he has everything it takes to be a very very good pitcher in this leage. that said, he'll need to maintain his minor league pace in k/9, if not better it, at this level if he wants to be a consistently excellent pitcher. either that, or develop a sinker or have out-of-this-world control. he simply cannot rely on fly balls to get outs from game to game. but congrats on his performance and here's to many more! I think there have been a few successful flyball pitchers at the ML level who weren't big strikeout pitchers. I don't totally disagree with the sentiment of your post, just saying that it's possible.
  4. Seems to me the main criticisms lobbed at Soriano pertain to his incredible inconsistency - and although I love it when he's dominating, I won't apologize for the criticism.
  5. But there must be a manager or two out there with a good philosophy who don't make those unbelieveably questionable in-game decisions with the same frequency that Lou and Dusty do.
  6. I'm just thrilled that it seems like Sean is getting a *real* shot to make it as a starter for the Cubs. No more of the stuck in the pen, not used, shuffled back to AAA, brought back up to rot in the pen, back down, and so on and so forth...
  7. So, what exactly happened to Rich Hill?
  8. note that this is absolutely a terrible way to judge whether a guy will be a good baseball player. Maybe, but I think the point he's making is fair: at the time we drafted Harvey, it was considered a great, great pick at the spot where we got him. Until his leg injury the year of the draft, he was definitely considered an easy top 3 pick, IIRC.
  9. Well, he did give you the walk you wanted :D. Unfortunately, I've noticed a really disturbing trend with Colvin that I hope when I finally break down and review all the game logs becomes just my perception and not reality. My perception though is that Colvin really is terrible in games he walks in. He either hits or he walks. He doesn't seem to be able to do both in the same game. I believe it was true last year (in the rare times he did walk, but of course he hit a lot more last year) and I'm almost certain it has been true this year. That is a very interesting perspective, and I would be very interested in hearing what your findings are if you look into it further. I do remember reading somewhere last year that some instructor in the system (don't remember who) said Colvin would never take many walks for a reason very similar to what you describe. Very preliminary findings. I took a quick look at the game logs for this year. Colvin is 4/26 with 1 2B in games he takes a walk in. Pretty awful, but I'm going to try to at least find the numbers for last year to get a better sample than 26 at-bats. Yeah, small sample size, but very interesting nonetheless.
  10. Don't the Padres have the worst offense in MLB or something? Just kidding. He's been phenomenal.
  11. So, let's see. Speculating that he would have gotten about $2 mill total compensation this and next year (although the Brewers have never been too generous with their auto-renew players), and then $6, $8, and $10 mill for his arb years, he basically gave up his first two years of free agency for $10 mill per. I think the Brewers just got a steal.

  13. Here's hoping this one can realize his potential.
  14. Good to see Colvin really following up on his breakout offensive performance.
  15. Ok, I'll take a serious stab at it: it might finally push Fukudome ahead of the run producers in the lineup. I feel dirty.
  16. Is it wrong to wish that Colvin was 4-4... with a walk? Thanks for the Peoria right-up, Outshined.
  17. Literally the only good thing to come out of this would be Fuk getting closer to the top of the lineup. Everything else about it stinks.
  18. Ready already? I didn't know a cycle kicked in that quickly.
  19. "Reds manager Dusty Baker said the batting order was correct on the dugout board and on his scorecard. "The guys hit out of order, and it's my job to catch that," Baker said. "So I take full responsibility." The problem was the double switch a few innings earlier, apparently Patterson and Ross weren't aware of it. Wow. Dusty owned up to something instead of making lame excuses or trying to blame someone else. Maybe he's turned over a new leaf. I agree, it's nice to see him taking the heat for that. If only we could get him to take some heat for Derrek Lee's RBI total in 2004-2006.
  20. Yikes. He's questionable to stay behind the plate going forward anyway, right? He has only been catching for a couple years, IIRC.
  21. It's just hard to imagine this is the same guy I watched in Spring Training last year and this year.
  22. Samardzija's first really bad start this year. I'm still hopeful.
  23. What troubles me about the question is how long it takes me to come up with an answer. And it's not one of those too-many-choices problems... :(
  24. I can understand being down on Veal after last year, but how could someone say they were never on him? His 2006 was absolutely disgusting.
  25. Feels like it had been a while for Mitch.
