  1. More problems for the Titans. Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger has been diagnosed with cancer (the article didn't specify what type) and will undergo chemotherapy.
  2. They had a decent run in the mid to late 80s under Dave Bliss. They made the NCAA tournament 3 years in a 5-year stretch (losing in the 2nd round each time). In 1984--85 (the year they actually lost to Chaminade; the article Garwilly linked to was a year off) they were #10 in the AP preseason poll and got as high as #2. Jon Koncak was their star.

  4. He wouldn't have had the same opportunity with the Cubs and probably would not have stuck. The Cubs were set in the OF, so there was no reason to think that a player who at that time had barely played higher than A-ball and who had missed most of the past several seasons due to injuries and then substance abuse suspensions would have made the Cubs' major league roster. The Reds were in a different situation. They weren't expected to be contenders and had room in the OF. Plus, at the time they were managed by Jerry Narron, a member of the family that had already been a big part of Hamilton's support system (the Narrons are from North Carolina, as is Hamilton). The Reds simply were the right fit for Hamilton's situation at the time and the Cubs were not.
  5. Chaminade beat Oklahoma 68-64 in the 7th place game of the Maui tournament. I remember when they made news by beating both Virginia and Louisville in the tournament (it may have been in back-to-back years, but I don't recall that detail).
  6. I don't think anyone can honestly say that a pitching coach can't have a major impact. Exhibit 1: Dave Duncan. How much of an impact depends on how much control the manager gives the pitching coach. I think the difference in Rothschild under Dusty vs. Lou helps bear that out.
  7. Ah, didn't realize they couldn't ban him from the training facilities. It makes sense, but it never occurred to me. I read it in an ESPN article yesterday. It mentioned that the main difference between Young's situation and McNair's is that since McNair wasn't under contract he didn't have a right to use the facilities, but since Young is under contract he does have that right. That's probably part of the CBA.
  8. Yeah, just saw that this morning. They apparently are letting him into the facility to rehab and work out (which they didn't let McNair do since he wasn't under contract), but won't let him into team meetings – or at least that one since they were specifically discussing Vince. Either way, it's a mess. My understanding is that, since he's under contract, the Titans can't completely ban him from headquarters; he has the right to access the training facilities to help in his rehabilitation.
  9. That's one of several new coaching assignments the Orioles just made. At the time I made my post Dunn was bullpen coach, but he has now been reassigned as minor league pitching coordinator (same position he had with the Cubs).
  10. That's the route they went when they hired Paul Schudel to replace Dwight Wallace. He was an assistant at Michigan at the time. He was definitely a good hire.
  11. Ball State fires Stan Parrish.
  12. I'm happy anytime Rivers scores big; I have him in my other league.
  13. Frazier is the third member of the 1985 Bears now serving as a head coach in the NFL or college football, joining Mike Singletary (49ers) and Brian Cabral (Colorado). If Jeff Fisher had played one year longer he'd also be on this list.
  14. Unfortunately I have NO chance to pull it out. I'm finished for the week and my opponent, already up by a bit over 6 points, has Sproles and Thomas going tonight. I'm willing to concede that they will not combine for -6 points. My team seems to have peaked too early. Hopefully they put it back together in time for the playoffs.
  15. He was hired away by the Orioles as bullpen coach during the 2007 season and still serves in that role. It isn't just former Cub players that MacPhail collects. :D
  16. Everything I've read indicates that it will be 2012.
  17. I don't see them scoring ANY points. :D
  18. Or, to make Cub fans mad, a centerfold of Joey Votto and Dusty Baker.
  19. He's reportedly doing a lot better and expected to make a full recovery. http://www.indystar.com/article/20101118/SPORTS/101118023/1068/SPORTS06/Ex-IU-star-A-J-Moye-expected-to-recover-from-stroke
  20. As if the Panthers didn't have enough problems, D'Angelo Williams was placed on IR with his sprained foot.
  21. I'd go with Gates. I don't know if the difference between Denver's and Carolina's defenses are enough to be worth the downgrade in players. It seems to me like Carolina's problems are more on offense (such as no quarterback and no running backs).
  22. You also had 47 points from Grossman, sort of balanced that out ;-). Wrong former Bear. But still a valid point. With all my bye week and injury issues I really didn't even expect to be close this week.
  23. One whole point from the Washington defense. At least I don't need to rely on them any more now that Green Bay is back from bye week.
  24. Breaking news: Michael Vick is good at football.
