  1. They were going to sign him but concluded he wasn't mentally prepared to play major league baseball.
  2. Yes. Three third-place votes for three total points (tied for 5th in the voting).
  3. In the "What else can go wrong?" category, Panthers' QB Jimmy Claussen suffered a concussion in yesterday's game. If he can't play this Sunday it will be Tony Pike's turn to be fed to the wolves.
  4. He also played for the Cubs (he started his major league career with the Cubs before being traded to the White Sox as part of the Steve Trout trade). IU basketball gives up 39 fewer points than IU football.
  5. They did.
  6. 25 points from Manningham. Not bad for a player I only picked up two days ago. I need a little over five points from the Redskins' defense tomorrow night to get back on the winning track. Regardless of the outcome, a much better showing than I expected with my bye week and injury issues.
  7. Fixed.
  8. Fixed. This absolutely MUST be Bill Lynch's last season.
  9. It must have been the 90s because I don't think Bama was on probation in the 80s. They've been on probation so often, though, that I can't keep up with when they were and weren't. I was curious enough to see how close my memory was, so I researched it. It was actually 1979, and it was Auburn, not Alabama, that was on probation. Going into the last week of the season Alabama was 5-0 in the SEC, Georgia had completed its conference season at 5-1, and Auburn was 4-1. Georgia was 5-5 overall, with their final game against Georgia Tech. Alabama played Auburn. If Auburn won all three teams would have tied at 5-1 in the SEC, but Auburn's postseason ban would have reduced it to an Alabama-Georgia tie. Alabama and Georgia didn't play each other that year, and whatever the relevant tie-breaker was (possibly the team that had won the conference least recently; that was a common tie-breaker in that era) would have favored Georgia. So if Alabama and Georgia had both lost Georgia would have been the conference champion but with a 5-6 overall record. However, Alabama and Georgia both won. Alabama then beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl to complete a 12-0 season and won the national championship according to both major polls; Georgia didn't play in a bowl game (back then there were many fewer bowl games and 6-5 teams stayed home).
  10. I actually was reading this the other day. The win total is one route to becoming eligible, winning a conference is the other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_eligible Thanks. That scenario probably almost never happens (I don't recall it happening) so it's pretty moot, but interesting nonetheless. I remember once many years ago (in the 80s or 90s) there was a chance late in the season for Georgia to be SEC champion with an overall losing record, but it didn't happen. I believe there was a team higher in the standings but on probation and ineligible for a bowl game (it may have been Alabama, but I'm not positive).
  11. Steve Smith (the Giant, not the Panther) will miss at least this week because of a torn pectoral muscle.
  12. I am waiting for the headline " Joe Morgen FIRED, Ryan Sandberg takes his place" That would be quite interesting, especially since RYAN Sandberg doesn't exist.
  13. Jimmy Claussen will start at QB for the Panthers, backed by Tony Pike, with Armanti Edwards as the emergency 3rd QB. All three are rookies; this is the first time that a team has had rookies for all three active QB positions since these records started being kept in 1991. And for more fun, both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are expected to miss the game with injuries. Tip: If you're participating in a pick'em contest where you have to choose a team to score the fewest points as a tie-breaker, choose the Panthers.
  14. Not actually related to this week's game, but former Bears' QB Jim McMahon says his memory is pretty much gone as a result of hits taken during his career. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-mcmahon-brainstudies
  15. No; assistant coach Brian Cabral (an NFL linebacker who spent most of his career with the Bears) is interim coach for the remainder of the season.
  16. Tampa Bay is my pick this week. Absolute lock.
  17. I can easily see myself losing again. Next week is a bye week nightmare for me (both of my TEs are out, along with my defense and kicker). Brees is off too, but I have Orton and Vick to choose from. I'd need to start cutting players and picking up free agents to field a full team (especially if Collie misses the game with his concussion). I'm not sure I want to do that for the sake of one week when some of my cuts would likely be picked up by other teams, so I may just go short-handed and concede the week in order to keep my team intact for the playoffs. I can live with 8-2.
  18. This group is people who's most significant impact was 1973--present. That's too recent for Santo to be included.
  19. Collie is reportedly sitting up in the locker room and has nothing more than a concussion.
  20. Looks like I'm toast this week. Oh well, I didn't expect to go undefeated anyway. I'm happy with 8-1.
  21. The description of the show in the DirecTV program guide actually says it's Tom Ricketts.
  22. new mexico beat wyoming so akron is left as the only winless team. It's fitting that Akron is the Zips since zip is the number of wins they have.
  23. In the ESPN.com Bottom 10 Pillow Fight of the Week #9 Ball State beat #1 Akron 37-30 in double overtime to keep Akron winless. Ball State is automatically kicked out of the Bottom 10 for at least one week as punishment for winning.
  24. The NFL Network's series on the top 100 players of all-time ended tonight with the top 10. Complete top 100 list
  25. Colts' WR Anthony Gonzalez has been placed on IR with a left knee injury.
