  1. 24-hour extension for labor talks. No lockout or decertification/lawsuit yet.
  2. I can't think of any better or simpler way to do it. I don't think it's too likely that the situations we're worried about would come up very often (if at all) anyway; if a player is considered a good prospect and has a reasonable chance of starting the season in the majors he's probably already on a roster. Clint's proposal eliminates the possibility of somebody (read: Tim) taking a flier in the major league draft on a pick from last June.
  3. In the past the limit has been 24 hours, although we've encouraged owners to pick sooner if possible.
  4. My understanding has always been that the three exempt years don't need to be consecutive if there are years in between when they didn't have the minimum PAs or pitching appearances to burn an exemption (that would be the case if a player misses the entire season due to injury or spends the entire season in the minors). I got an extra exempt year from Kelly Johnson a couple of years ago because he had missed an entire season with an injury. I think that was also the situation with Stauffer (TJS if I recall).
  5. Reports are that the honor code violation that got Davies kicked off was that he had sexual relations with his girlfriend. Definitely a no-no at BYU. Their honor code is so restrictive that even drinking coffee or tea is a violation.
  6. BYU starting forward Brandon Davies has been dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season due to an honor code violation.
  7. Carp was removed from a game today after just a few pitches in what is described as "an arm injury." I saw an article that it was a hamstring injury and not considered serious. One can hope, though.
  8. This wording would still mean that some players could be taken in either draft, since some players with major league service time would still be minor league eligible. I'm fine with that if it's with the understanding that if such a player is taken in the major league draft that would rule out somebody else taking him in the minor league draft. That would also take care of the Harper issue, since he doesn't have major league time and would therefore be ineligible for the major league draft.
  9. His only season with the Cubs was 2000, Baylor's first season as manager.
  10. I remember a few years back Wayne shared duties; it's been several years since he had the job by himself. I believe he still sings the anthem before some of the games (he should do it all the time).
  11. Now only Willie remains from that group. Perhaps the best set of three players in the same town at the same position (excluding pitchers) ever.
  12. You're right about this. Navin picked up Chris Sale when he was called up to the majors by the White Sox last year (much to Clint's chagrin).
  13. I'm more concerned about the major league draft. If a player with eligibility at both levels is available to be taken in the prospect draft that means every manager had a fair chance at the player and passed (last year was different because we did the prospect draft first). So I don't really have a problem with taking a minor-league eligible player in the prospect draft and then have that player wind up in the majors. As far as the major league draft is concerned I think Al's proposal has some merit, but that would have the effect of punishing a manager with the loss of a player due to circumstances that can't be accurately predicted at this time. There could be a player who clearly belongs in the major leagues but gets sent down for a couple weeks to start the season to delay free agency by a year. This is quite common. As a variation, how about saying that if you draft a player in the major league draft you must keep him on your major league roster or release him unless he gets sent to the minors in real baseball, but if he does then you can place him on your minor league roster? It would probably be simpler if we went back to the old way of having a single draft and you decided how many major leaguers vs. prospects you draft, but if we did that we might as well just concede the top prospects to Tim and be done with it since he'd use some of his hoarded draft picks to overdraft prospects before anyone else got them. :D
  14. Nah, they're getting all the suckiness out of their system during the preseason. 140-22. Then they get swept by an 82-80 team in the NLDS.
  15. Another former Bear has died: defensive back Ricky Bell at 36. He actually died Feb. 17 but it was just reported today. He played three seasons in the NFL, including 1997 and 1998 with the Bears, before playing in NFL Europe, XFL, CFL, and AFL. No cause of death has been announced.
  16. One potential conflict is that there can be players who have played in the major leagues before but still have few enough plate appearances or pitching appearances to retain minor league eligibility. That could include players called up last September when rosters expanded or players called up earlier in the year who did not see enough regular playing time to lose minor league eligibility. Off the top of my head I can think of at least three such players on my own roster (Castro, Ka'iwhatever, and McGee). Since they'd qualify for either my major league or minor league roster, presumably players in similar situations would qualify for either draft.
  17. I merged the two game threads together.
  18. Yep; would have just edged out Aram's 83.
  19. Forfeiture of one draft pick per day until they pay, starting with their first picks and carrying over to future years if they still haven't paid when their picks for this year have been all forfeited.
  20. Thread title edited to remove question mark since it's now official.
  21. Yep; Young injured Wainwright's elbow. BTW, I was one of the few who voted for the moves to be allowed, so stay away from Lincecum. :D
  22. That's probably from having a PM waiting. I think there's a setting somewhere to stop popups from new PM's. There is, under board preferences in the user control panel. That happened to me at times too. Sometimes Foxfire's Adblock stopped it, sometimes it didn't.
  23. I haven't seen that information. The articles I've seen just said before his suicide, not how much before.
  24. That game isnt over. Even if they lose, they'll still win the conference. I don't see another loss for them. Maybe @ Baylor. And we still have to win @ Mizzou. As lost as we looked in the hostile environment @ KSU, it's hard to believe we'll win at Paige Arena. I see you both at 14-2. You'll beat Mizzou, you are too athletic for that style to bother you too much. Mizzou Arena. No, I'm pretty sure they named the stadium after Paige Laurie, extremely wealthy Wal-Mart heiress and Mizzou graduate. They did, but then they un-named it after her USC roommate accused Paige of paying her to write papers, etc. Her family returned the naming rights to the university and she eventually forfeited her diploma from USC. It was quite widely reported at the time (2004/2005). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mizzou_Arena#Naming_Controversy
