  1. There's been a lot of heated (on both sides) discussion of this; I thought it warrants a poll.
  2. As I said a day or so ago in another thread, I think the Cubs should have tendered him. There's a chance (not a guarantee) he'll pitch effectively this year, and there's a chance (not a guarantee) that, with a new regime in place by the end of the season, he might have reconsidered his willingness to return. I think it was a chance worth gambling on. However, given that the Cubs decided not to bring him back, I'm moving on. This isn't going to ruin the excitement of signing Fukudome for me. I was a Cub fan long before Prior joined them, and I will be long after he left. I'm a fan of the team more than of individual players. I really do think that ultimately there was blame to be placed on both parties, and both parties decided that a fresh start was needed.
  3. Agree with Evans and White. Smith is one of the best receivers in the game, but that's meaningless when the Panthers don't have a quarterback to get the ball to him.
  4. That's the copout response, which is why I didn't give it as an option.
  5. Theriot looked good defensively when he got his hands on the ball. But because his arm is so weak, he was playing in a few steps, which comprimised his range considerably. All in all, he was below average with the glove, simply because he could never get to the ball. Everett shouldn't have to compete, he'd be hands-down a much better option than Theriot. Yes, he should have to compete. If he is much better than Theriot (and I think he is) it would be evident from the competition.
  6. Problem is he's going to one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in the league. It's still a bad deal for the Astros because the guy appears to be older than he really is. They gave up a ton for a guy that's not getting any younger. True, but has anyone, ever, at any point in recorded human history "gotten any younger?" Soriano. :D
  7. You've named all the Division 1-A schools in North Carolina. Appalachian State is also in NC.
  8. The deadline is midnight tonight Eastern time. I don't think you ever officially non-tender somebody, you simply don't tender them by the deadline. So I believe they could change their minds and tender him up until the deadline.
  9. Yes, they can. That's what happened a few years ago with Barrett. However, for that to happen Prior would have to be willing to return to the Cubs of his own free choice, which sounds slightly less likely than me winning the lottery jackpot. The Cubs have lost their exclusive rights (unless they change their minds in about the next 8 hours and tender him).
  10. I DID see it posted elsewhere. One page back by you, to be specific. :D
  11. It's really that simple. On top of that, Greene is better than Theriot by a far wider margin than Roberts is better than DeRosa. That other stuff about lineup positioning, while nice to think about, is pretty insignificant. This team + Greene instead of Theriot would score more runs than this team + Roberts instead of DeRosa. Any concern that the Padres might have the Cubs last on their trading partner list after the Fukudome signing? No Kevin Towers is smart, he wont let something like that get in the way of him trying to improve his team. Any GM that does hold a grudge for losing out on a player like that is basically a jackass. Agreed. If the Padres can get a better trade from the Cubs than from other teams they won't refuse to do it just because the Cubs signed a free agent that the Padres also wanted. That would be the equivalent of the Cubs refusing to trade with the Dodgers just because the Dodgers stole Furcal from the Cubs.
  12. I don't think it's a certainty that Prior would refuse to return to the Cubs in 2009. I believe his current thinking is that he won't, but by the time he has to make that decision the Cubs will have a new owner. Perhaps he'd decide that the people he had problems with are gone, and he'd be agreeable to pitching for a team owned by Mark Cuban and managed by Lou Piniella. There's enough unknown about the future I think it's worth a gamble. My preference would be for a one-year deal with a team option (or even a vesting option based on innings pitched), but if he won't agree to that I think there's enough chance of him changing his mind that it's worth a gamble for one year. I'm not at all convinced he won't pitch this year.
  13. Didn't she just get married to a Card fan too? Or at least engaged? I think you're right about that. Talk about sleeping with the enemy. :D
  14. They can if Prior's willing to negotiate as opposed to just go through arbitration.
  15. I could even live with Rusch or Estes as the fifth starter under that scenario. :D
  16. I've been down on Hendry's previous free agent signings, but he got it right this time. Good move.
  17. I said just at the major league level. Minor league teams frequently change affiliations. As I'm sure many posters here recall, we have an NSBB member who is a Cubs fan but works (or worked) for the Cardinals, although she hasn't posted here recently.
  18. Anderson. He's been very good all year. I signed him as an undrafted free agent for one of my teams, and now he's my starting QB. And that team finished the regular season with an 8 game winning streak, seeded second in the playoffs, and won the first playoff match. So Anderson has been very good for me.
  19. It's a ig deal because using demeaning ncknames is disrespectful. It's a big deal because we know that there are people connected to the Cubs' organization registered here and probably others that frequent this site as guests. It's a big deal because some of them undoubtedly know her, if not actually friends, and people don't like to see other people they know referred to disrespectfully. It's a big deal because the moderators have requested people not to and have even set up a word sensor to try to prevent it, and people intentionally skirting around the word sensors is disrespectful to the moderators.
  20. That could include losing in this season's playoffs, since they're played in January and therefore technically "next year."
  21. Nothing about the article you linked to suggests that he's stepping down after next season. It said he can continue coaching as long as he wants, then he will be replaced by Fisher. That's consistent with what was reported on my news tonight. He's signing a one-year contract extension with options beyond that for him to continue coaching as long as he wants.Perhaps the reporter writing the article originally misinterpreted the statements and they were clarified later. Ha! They changed what was written in the article. The quote above is what the article said earlier this afternoon.
  22. Andy isn't the only Ball State fan around here. Right. I graduated from Ball State, and there are at least a couple of other posters (Photoguy and, I believe, Doug Dascenzo) who went to BSU. We're everywhere. :D
