  1. I'm not so much advocating for trading back to get depth, but maybe they trade from (in that scenario) 5 to 12 or so and pick QB3 there while also picking up a 2nd rounder, since they traded their 2nd for Sweat
  2. Basically a disaster scenario for the Bears. At that point, do you look to trade down from one of those picks and angle for McCarthy or whoever you think is the 3rd best QB? Or do you have to take the best prospect (Fashanu? Harrison Jr somehow? Dallas Turner? Bowers?) and the 3rd QB at 4 and 5 in whichever order?
  3. and it's not like the Texans have some great roster either
  4. Most impressive Illini drive since Juice Williams against Ohio State in 07
  5. definitely, but not currently on the roster, which I do believe was Tim's point
  6. Pretty sure Purdue's OL is basically devastated, so UM probably shouldn't have trouble with their offense
  7. Top 5 pick! Boy did they ever screw the pooch by not taking Halliburton. That draft really sucked
  8. They could easily go 30-40 beyond it then, right? If they're dropping 50 off after '24, that lets them reset
  9. Oh I know, it's just that this pretty much removes any doubt. But I wish there were consequences for putting together such an awful roster 2 years in a row. Both lines have been awful for 2 years (though Wright looks really good). Secondary depth is non-existent despite the fact that he's picked 6 DBs in the last 2 drafts. We have 1 good WR, 1 solid #2, and then a whole lot of nothing despite a 3rd and 4th rd pick being used on WRs. The only things I can point to as clear successes for Poles: The trade return for #1. Imagine DJ Moore with a good QB. That Panthers pick this year will be good too. Darnell Wright looks good.
  10. The worst part of the Sweat deal is that it basically signals that Poles is sticking around. So the guy who signed off on Flus and his staff gets to pick another coach. The guy who ignored WR and EDGE in consecutive offseasons where he had tons of cap space only to trade away extremely valuable picks for players to fill those holes gets to head into FA with tons of cap space and a crap roster again.
  11. Hendricks, Arrieta, Strop, Wade Davis, Dex (1st year) and I think Rizzo... pretty solid returns
  12. At the very least, Sweat is likely worth it for this Bears team to give him the Franchise Tag. He's a huge DE with proven pass rush ability (though on a much better WAS DL than what the Bears have). Sweat had 28 QB Hits last year. The ENTIRE Bears DL had 32 last year. Those 28 hits would be the most for the Bears in every single season the stat has been tracked by Pro Football Reference (since 2006).
  13. It's not any more useless than your blanket statement that they won't sign Soto because they haven't signed anyone to a comparable contract. There have been exactly 2 players who fit the criteria that Soto fits. One that they seemingly didn't pursue because of the presence of KB at the same position, and one that we were all scratching our heads that they didn't seem to seriously pursue, but who also signed a record-breaking deal. The point is, making a declaration that they won't offer Soto a competitive deal and therefore shouldn't try to acquire him is foolish because we have no idea what they might offer Soto in FA.
  14. Here is the list of top 5 hitters in all of baseball who have come available at age 26 (which Soto will turn after next season, just before becoming a FA) during the time the Ricketts family has owned the team: Bryce Harper, Manny Machado (YMMV on whether or not he was a top 5 hitter, I would argue not, but he was probably close) Harper had posted OPS+ of 133, 156, 114, and 198 the 4 years before FA. Machado ran his at 145, 108, 130, and 132 Soto's last 4 seasons were 158, 147, 175 and a 217 in the covid year... 142 the year before that, as a 20 year old Even those 2 haven't produced consistently great numbers like Soto. And they were both available the same offseason with nearly every team bidding for them. I would imagine the Cubs made good, but not good enough, offers to both. But either way, comparing the FAs they've signed to Soto is irrelevant, because there have basically been 3 FAs like Soto that I can recall since 2000, those 2 and ARod when he signed with Texas for 10/252.
  15. Trading Morel for Soto doesn't remove talent from our MLB roster. It IMPROVES the talent of our MLB roster, at the (not insignificant) cost of money and maybe an additional minor leaguer or 2
  16. Screw you, Poles. You have roughly a billion dollars in cap space and only like 4 good players on the roster. Sign the guy! What can we even get? A 3rd rounder? Odds are that 3rd rounder is much worse than JJ.
  17. If you somehow have the opportunity to trade Morel straight up for Soto (or even Morel and a prospect around 20th in our system) you take it. He's a freakin superstar. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Glasnow (who is as likely to blow out his arm as he is to pitch well for a whole season) and a prospect who has performed well in the minors, but has no MLB track record? why on earth would you make that deal and not one for Soto? Yes, you give up years on control. But having a player like Soto on the roster changes everything. You put him in the lineup everyday and let him be a top 5 hitter in the league. Everyone else becomes more valuable, because when the guys in front of him get on, they're more likely to score, and the guys behind him are more likely to get ABs with guys on base. WAR is an imperfect measure of value that I think probably underestimates guys who do one thing exceptionally well
  18. How valuable would Luis Vazquez be to them? I know he hasn't sniffed the majors and this year was a career year with the bat, but he's got a pretty great reputation defensively
  19. Juan Soto likely gets you closer to a WS this year than Christopher Morel and whatever prospects (Killian? Christian Franklin? Arias?) you might send with him. He's a star, and his impact in the Cubs lineup would be tremendous. He's the best young hitter in the game. You have to give up value to get value. Having him in Chicago playing for a (presumably) winning team probably gives you a boost in FA negotiations.
  20. Favre is a pretty notable example of success with a 2nd team, but i guess he wasn't really a bust with the Falcons.
  21. I'd go ahead and give Leiter a contract, but if he doesn't have the splitter in ST cut him loose. And if he has it for a while then loses it for a few outings, cut him loose. We are a big market team, no need to let a less than $2M decision hurt our roster. Palencia, Cuas and Little all need to be given a shot, but I think ideally at least 2 of them open in Iowa, if not all 3, due to arms we trust more.
  22. yes, this week sucked, but they literally just won a road game where they were 15 point underdogs the week before...
