  1. Exactly what I expected them to do. This seems like a "get him in the pitch lab and see what we can work with" kinda guy. And maybe move him to the pen and see if the numbers play up. Bummed to lose an interesting lefty in Horn but overall it's a smart move.
  2. Looks like he's crushed lefties for the most part the last few years. Career OPS vs lefties is 60-70 points higher than vs righties.
  3. Damn, Cubs really don't want Mervis to have a chance. This is a more interesting/realistic depth signing than Dom Smith.
  4. Lisa was interviewed by MLBN Radio lol
  5. Mervis, Ben Brown, Triantos, Smyly for AJ Puk and Dax Fulton. Clears up the 40 man, gives us a great lefty and another depth starter prospect. Now tell my why this is stupid.
  6. I think they value Mastrobuoni's versatility. And he hit much better down the stretch last season.
  7. I LOVE this deal. This is the contract I was kinda hoping for, especially as the offseason wore on, but in no way did I expect it to happen. If Belli has another monster year, he still hits FA before he's 30 and we have given the young guys another season to grow.. If he falters, he's locked in for another year and we work with what we have down the road and have options. I don't see a downside to this.
  8. Part of me wonders if he doesn't do what the Dodgers did a couple times this offseason and trade one or two guys off the 40 man for interesting unrostered prospects. I love Keegan and want him to be a thing again but he might be the odd man out this time. There's plenty other starters/long relievers that have leapfrogged him on the depth chart.
  9. I know they hired Boras because they wanted to get PAID, but I wonder if the "Big 4" are starting to regret it or are overly frustrated with negotiations now that Spring Training has started. I can see them being annoyed to not be in camp already and getting acclimated. Even if, say, Bellinger signs somewhere else next week, he'll be a little behind schedule.
  10. Oh hey Cole Roederer is still around.
  11. Hell yeah, I miss like 2 days on the site and it devolves into the usual madness. My takes! 1) Taking the side of the owner over the players and fanbase is lunacy. It's like saying your favorite part of the meal is paying the check. Owners buy teams as a vanity project, most don't care as long as they make money. They don't have the best interests in the game or the fans. I have been a Cubs fan my whole life but I rarely buy stuff from the Cubs. You can support the team and no the owner. 2) Peralta and Dom Smith (lol, took long enough) are fine depth signings. Ideally we don't see them on the field but injuries happen. 3) I'm gonna assume Mervis is still around for lefty power but I'd be shocked if he's still in the organization come August. I'd wager he's gone by April. I still think there's a way we flip him for an interesting, controllable reliever and that's probably more valuable to us than his bat-only approach. 4) Yay Spring Training!
  12. That could be just for sake of flexibility. Counsell hasn't worked with Morel yet, wants to see what he can do. If Morel can be anything more than strictly a DH, it helps the roster.
  13. Whit Merrifield to the Phillies. Dan Vogelbach to the Blue Jays. Some lower tier guys off the board. And those two, along with Soler to the Giants, maybe takes out three of the big teams in on Bellinger. And who knows who's still in on Chapman. Maybe I'll be wrong but it looks like Boras' waiting game this offseason didn't work out. EDIT: Vogelbach is only a MiL deal but point stands. With adding Turner too, there doesn't appear to be a roster fit for him in Toronto.
  14. I'm gonna add I could see someone slated to start the year in the pen getting booted for one of Little or Horn to be the extra lefty. My money would be on Cuas, who had some ups and downs last year and still has options. There's also the possibility Smyly looks washed and gets DFAd.
  15. I'm with you on that. I honestly see no reason it's not his spot to lose in ST. They gave him a look at the end of last season and he mostly impressed. I'd rather him over some of the FA starters out there we were connected to recently (Lorenzen, Thor). And if he sputters out of the gate I'm confident Assad can step back in. I honestly really like our starting depth. No big wow factor but should be decent.
  16. This is what #PTR has done to us. Tale as old as time. Rich a-hole makes the commoners fight with each other for his amusement.
  17. He really looked like a guy in the second half. Hoping that yeah he comes into ST looking in better shape and picks up generally where he left off. Him being a 3-4 WAR pitcher would be huge.
  18. Twins traded Nick Gordon to the Marlins for Steven Okert. Buy-low former top prospect for decent lefty reliever. Probably something we could've matched up on. I expect (hope) that to be the first of several deals in the coming days before ST starts.
  19. I forgot about Brad Wieck. He looked like he might be a guy before injuries. Was it TJS? Looking at his stats, he hasn't allowed a run in the majors since 2020!
  20. The Marlins DFA'd Jordan Groshans. Another reminder that top prospects can bottom out. He's still just 24.
  21. This probably ends up being a minor trade but god I want Luzardo and Puk bad. Here's a random thought, would Jed trade PCA as a result of signing Bellinger?
  22. Catching up, I'm really happy for the Orioles. They get out from under Angelos' cheapskate thumb and get an ace for a reasonable price. Go for it, guys.
  23. I assumed Gomes and Amaya would be the tandem all season and Jorge Alfaro is a pretty capable 3rd catcher down in Iowa, unless he has an opt-out clause. I wouldn't be against adding another backstop but I'm fine with the depth chart as it stands. Hey maybe we can try Morel at catcher!
  24. Wandy Peralta had a FIP over 5 last season and the Padres gave him a 4 year deal with THREE opt outs. What's even the point?
  25. That's all a really polite way of saying "You can believe in FACTS and SCIENCE and TREATING OTHERS WELL but people on my tv said fascism is actually good and that's fine with me so why are you mad?" All that aside, I like our pen in general now. Another lefty might be nice but I don't know that I'd do much else.
