Leadoff has been dubbed a position, but it really isn't. You get someone at the top of the order who walks, makes contact, and works the count and you're good. It doesn't have to be a GRIT-ty who can swipe a bag or two. Scott Hatterberg and Kevin Youkilis have batted "leadoff" in the past, successfully.
Beane likes to trade pitchers at their peak value. If he does this with Street, he's going to demand more than I'd be willing to give up. Bradley and Cabrera may be good options, but I want no part of GMJR or Durham.
Freel will have the edge over Hopper because Freel can steal bases, which Dusty must have, and Dusty tends to make out lineups based on position. CF will be the leadoff spot and designated basestealer's position. Norris Hopper is a hands down better and smarter baserunner then Freel is. Freel is baseball [expletive]. But Freel has a friend inside his head.
I'm assuming Juan Uribe and not former Giant SS Jose Uribe. His contract is expensive but he's a better defensive SS while being one of the more frustrating players to watch at the plate, despite having some pop. It would be a tough decision between Theriot and Uribe, although I would lean towards keeping Theriot. Of the two, it'd be a real close call... But Uribe has an edge of at least 10-15 runs with the glove. Can Theriot real make it up with the bat? So what you're saying is that Uribe would make up for the RGI that we lost by trading Izturis last year?
If we could change it to Marshall, Murton, Veal, Cedeno, and Fuld/ Kroeger, then I'd be happy. As is, I'd probably still do it, but not without hesitence.
