Ok so at this point, if Boob's reporting is accurate, then hard no on Bregman and move on. I admit like everyone else I was excited about adding a big name to the lineup but the upgrade in terms of WAR is minimal and would cause some payroll issues. And after missing out on Alonso, I could see the Blue Jays just caving. Their 3B depth chart is Ernie Clement and Davis Schneider.
Now just bolster the bench and maybe add another reliever, though after Brasier it wouldn't surprise me if this is the pen we take into camp.
Another interesting point, if the Cubs get Bregman and keep Nico, do they have the best defensive team in the league? Gold Gloves at 3B, SS, 2B, LF, RF. CF is a sure-fire future GG. Busch played adequately at 1B and the catching tandem should be decent.
That's possible, though I'm not sure what they'd want (I live in Philly and also root for them, when they're not playing the Cubs). I suppose they deal him for a proper CFer but them signing Kepler complicated things there. Their rotation is solid and pen should hold up (plus you're not trading Bohm for a reliever).
But they re-upped Polanco, meaning they don't need to add an infielder.
The Yankees are interesting. They have some intriguing guys ready to go in Cabrera and Peraza but don't seem inclined to let either take 2B/3B. Maybe Nico for Gil or Schmidt plus a prospect? Not my favorite idea but I can see the logic.
That said, you have to believe this reaches its resolution sooner rather than later. Pitchers and catchers report in less than 2 weeks and Boras clients have not had great success holding out into ST/ the season.
Maybe I'm missing something, why would the Red Sox want to add a 3B? Even if they move one or Devers to DH, then were does Yoshida play? Shift Duran to CF and Rafaela back to 2B?
Maybe this has been brought up, but I feel like Law is a contrarian, and he enjoys being a bit of an outlier. Seems like he touts favorites a lot and has negative opinions of prospects who are generally well regarded.
Then again, I don't know if his track record is any better than the norm.
Unless Bregman truly wants to play in Chicago and hates the idea of Detroit, I just don't see how it happens. Maybe he gets a Bellinger type deal for 3 years with opt-outs and hopes he can bet on himself for more money in a year or two? And again, I'd rather have Shaw and Hoerner than Shaw and Bregman.
I was thinking that. And there's also the possibility you go to an organization you think can help get you where you want to be with mechanics and performance and parlay that into a deal elsewhere during the season or next offseason. We've seen the Cubs sign guys like this to a MiLB deal and then they ask for their release to go to another team or overseas.
Yeah and we apparently wanted him previously so the interest is there. And he is due just $4.5 mil this season so PTR would be happy. But I'd rather have Robertson still.
Ok so can we just do Cease and Suarez for Caissie, Assad, Merryweather or Keegan Thompson and, say, Pedro Ramirez? Seems like that should be enough. Maybe another lottery ticket.
Charlie Sheen (Carlos Estevez) to the Royals for 2 years and $22 million.
Considering he's coming off a good season as a closer and will presumably handle the 9th inning, wonder if we can then get Robertson for under 10.
Yeah I would much rather have Nico and put Shaw at third.
It is a fascinating idea though of sending Nico+ for a solid starting pitcher and then signing Bregman and having Shaw man 2B. But many more wins is Bregman worth over Hoerner?
