it's bad enough they have the second worst obp guy batting second already. they certainly don't need the worst obp guy batting second. also, batting him second would significantly increase the pressure on him, not decrease it.

His medical report was so bad that it scared off a bunch of teams and he was only able to get a 1-year deal with a $1 million base. This kind of garbage can probably be put to rest now. so you're saying he wasn't just a huge wuss that refused to pitch through pain that he completely imagined?

the OBP of gonzalez and roberts couldn't be any more different. -
well, marshall was cheaper, healthier and better than lieber last year. and lieber is a year older, while marshall has another year of experience. i don't know why anyone would think that lieber would be better than marshall.

yeah, that's not true at all. after all, he's not playing for free. also, i'd rather have marshall out there than lieber. so i'd say the worst case scenario is lieber sucks, steals $3.5 mil and the cubs lose games because a better pitcher loses starts. or, the cubs could trade marquis/dempster, lieber (predictably) gets hurt, and the cubs are thin in the rotation. Lieber is better than Marshall. at what?

I don't know why anybody would assume that. He's a big fat 38 year old coming off surgery. seriously. if he wasn't an ex-cub, fan favorite, people would be freaking out right now. Seriously, it seems people are freaking out because he's an ex-cub. i'm freaking out (though i'm not really freaking out) because he's old, not very good, fat, injury-prone, and somewhat expensive. and because the cubs don't need another back of the rotation starter.

Why is it so upsetting to everyone to get 100 innings of league average production from the 5 spot as opposed to 200 innings of below average production? seriously? where are the other 100 innings that lieber can't go coming from? also, i don't think it's written in stone that a fat, oft-injured, 38 year old lieber is league average. Gallagher? Marshall? Hart? and are those guys going to be league average or better? you can't just say 100 average innings is better than 200 below average innings without taking into consideration the necessary 100 innings in the first scenario are probably going to be below average. You can't bash the alternatives for the "other" 100 IP as a reason not to get Lieber, because they're the ones going for 200 IP if we don't have him. not necessarily. i'm guessing it'd be 200 innings of dempster/marquis vs. 100 innings of lieber and 100 innings of hart/marshall/gallagher.

you can find closers anywhere, but that's not the point. you can't find relivers as good as nathan anywhere.
