  1. Based on what? Baez? Soler's been very good and Almora and Vizcaino have yet to play. Vogelbach and Shoulders have been very impressive. Anything from Vitters or Jackson is gravy as far as I'm concerned, and most of the other relevant prospects havn't done anything eye popping but have been pretty solid. Yes, based on Baez. And I guess we have different definitions of "very good" and "very impressive". Because i don't think Soler has been "very" good, or Vogelbach "very" impressive. I was also including Almora's broken hand and Vizcaino having yet to throw a pitch as reasons for the [expletive] season so far. Like I said, it's still a small sample size but it'd be nice to have a strong week or two to get excited about. Yeah, the fact that guys that need to produce in the minors haven't played yet isn't a good thing. Anything from Vitters and Jackson may be gravy, but they are considered by many top 10 prospects in this organization still, and the nothingness that has been their respective starts to the season is still disappointing. Makes it difficult to fool some team into taking them as part of a package deal.
  2. No direct quotes, but they said so on a season ticket holder conference call: http://chicagocubsonline.com/archives/2012/11/cubsnews11212.php#.UZOLLLXvNq5 Guys his age who have missed this much time to injury aren't a slam dunk for anything.
  3. I went to the game so I missed this. Cliffs? They had a guy on to talk about the wrigleyfield.com site and video and during the play where Soriano threw a guy out at the plate he kept talking. He even talked over Len calling the out. In other words, in the course of promoting/marketing/communicating a website specifically meant to garner support from Cubs fans for their stadium plan, their communications honcho pissed off Cubs fans. Granted, there probably weren't that many watching at the time.
  4. For a head of communications the guy they had on during the game last night sure was bad at knowing when to shut up during the course of play.
  5. All that talk of tempo and speed in practice sounds an awful lot like what we heard when Lovie first showed up. Has Trestman gone beyond that or were Lovie's practices starting to slowdown as the roster aged?
  6. Urlacher may be signing with Vikings
  7. I like how 30-40 seconds into the video as you are "walking up the steps" to the field they hold on a shot of LF. They don't mention the jumbotron but the area is wide open and begging for something to fill the void.
  8. The 90's weren't that long ago, and they had a legit dynasty then. But they do hit pretty much all the rest. Or the Knicks.

  10. I don't care what he does in the privacy of his own bedroom, but don't broadcast it.
  11. three more in a row and they'll only be three games under .500.
  12. Obviously not a perfect match but I think they are more Dodgers than Cubs. Terrific success in the middle of the last century and then not much since then. Maybe a combination of Dodgers/Indians/Cubs.
  13. wait, was that george mccaskey? That's what I told my wife, so I hope so.
  14. I'm going to guess it's a bastardization of Gavin. Ah, that makes a lot more sense. in a video on youtube he explains that it sounds like Gavin and is a county in Ireland.
  15. Quick, let me find the youngest guy who had a good day and fawn over him. Looks like your best bet is one of the hitters. ;) Unless there was a pitcher to manage getting through an inning unscathed.
  16. I'm going to guess it's a bastardization of Gavin.
  17. Brad Biggs ‏@BradBiggs 1m #Bears have released LB Dom DeCicco and CB LeQuan Lewis. Brad Biggs ‏@BradBiggs 2m #Bears announce signing of DT's Corvey Irvin & Christian Tupou, CB Maurice Jones and WR Demetrius Fields from rookie minicamp. Brad Biggs ‏@BradBiggs 1m Check that #Bears agreed to terms with CB Maurice Jones. So, they will have to release a player to officially add him.
  18. Oh come on, you've been around here long enough to know how badly this post is going to be destroyed, so why even bother? What kind of player will Rizzo turn out to be? I already said this was a great deal for the Cubs, but it makes no sense to compare his contract or play to Votto after being with the Cubs for less than a year. It makes no sense to purposefully avoid comparing his contract or play to other players at his position. That's like the basis of nearly all conversations about baseball.
  19. Protective to a fault? What the F does that mean and on what is it based?
  20. Even if I was pretty sure I was going to make more by waiting, it would be pretty hard to pass up $41M guaranteed. Yea it's not like he's a FA either. His ability to earn is limited by arbitration, which makes the figure harder to wrap our minds around since we're so used to basing figures off FA deals. Plus a guy who had lymphoma probably realizes more than most how quickly life can change, so you take that guaranteed cash even if its a 20% or whatever discount. But it's not just a discount, the team options are huge, and puts him in a spot where he will negotiate his next contract after he has already started to decline. $17m/year was the standard for upper echelon 1B a decade ago, and $20m+ has become the norm now. If the Cubs own options at $14.5m for each of his age 30 and 31 seasons, then he's going to be looking for that FU money contract starting with his age 32 season. The way things are going in baseball, he'll get it from somebody, but damn, I would have thought those options would be much more expensive than $14.5m.
  21. Was Rizzo that hard-up for cash now?
  22. Sure looks like we are past that, thankfully
