Right it'll be another failure by Tom Ricketts What an oddly late response. Do you or do you not think Theo has had the ability to spend freely under Ricketts to this point? were you trying to say 3 years would be "quick" to turn a $110m payroll into a winning club?

    No. They flat-sucked for 7 years, then they're working on their second losing season out of three when their window was supposed to be open. That would not be awesome. When the role models for your franchise's plan have broken .500 once in nine seasons, maybe it's time to take a step back and have some perspective. hey guess what we're the rays with a lot more money, frigging sweet. you have to keep couching your "examples" with situations that aren't analogous, it's worthless. What's worthless is full seasons of crappy major league baseball, and the Cubs are in their 4th consecutive, two of which will be on these guys' collective watch. It remains to be seen if they will have the Rays success. I would have assumed they could have been the Rays with more money at the outset, but what they've put on the field so far has put serious questions into whether they can actually pull it off. A good front office should be able to draft and develop quality players without having to tank for the top of the draft, and/or wait for their third season to compete. Extremely highly compensated front office supergroups should be able to do it with relative ease. These guys have been handed an easy job, just stock the farm and don't worry about results at the major league level. That's simple.

    Yeah, that's exactly what I said. The point was that you have to build from within before you can successfully build from without. Not even the Yankees were exempt from this. No one is expecting the Cubs to become the Yankees, but the approach should be the same. And the guys I mentioned were merely very good before they were HOFers, and that was enough. And it was a few years on from when the Yanks re-emerged that they started "breaking the league" with their spending. That Yankees run was probably something that will not be replicated, by anyone. But its genesis was not in insane spending, it was in player development. Even when the Yankees were not yet running away with the payroll leaderboard, they were merely playing leapfrog with Baltimore. It's also not at all true that you have to build from within before you can successfully build from without. That may be the preferred method for some. That is the safe and more cost effective method. But it is also the much more time consuming and loss running up method. The only teams that have to build from within first are the truly poor ones or the rich ones who choose to be run excessively conservatively.

    We need the Frontier League to just steal High-A away from the FSL, they're already out-drawing them with a far inferior product. I'd say disband the FSL entirely, but most of the orgs in the league(all but the Cubs and Brewers, actually) are dumb enough to have their ST complexes there. actually in february/march it doesn't rain that much in florida, at least on the peninsula. I wasn't as much referring to Spring Training games as the rest of the activities that happen at those complexes. Player rehab, GCL games, etc. Think about all the in-season stuff that happens at Mesa and how awful it would be to be constantly interrupted by weather and poor playing conditions. I'm sure the guys who have to do stuff in Phoenix during the summer would kill for some more rain showers.

    You need an actual owner/town to invest the money into a stadium and making the team an ongoing funded entity. My guess is if such an owner/town combination existed, it wouldn't be much of an issue, but the problem is that minor league baseball has pretty much saturated the market.

    We don't know that, but we do know they will end the season with more losses than wins, and it's a decent bet that they will have more losses than wins the next two months. Does not change the point that was being made.

Got rid of it, that's why guys like Garza have a slightly dimished trade value as the teams can't even net a compensation pick if he leaves via FA the next season. So they implemented the rule. What you wrote suggests those players now net a compensation pick.

    The first 10, though we don't technically know who will be type A yet. Maybe I've been too absorbed with work lately, but I thought they got rid of the whole type A/B/C thing and just work off who gets a qualified offer and who doesn't. Yeah they did and also got rid of the rule that pending FA who gets traded, even if they receive a qualifying offer (Garza for example), can't net the acquiring team a compensation pick. Wait, they got rid of that rule, or implemented that rule?

    Isn't it more of a silver linings situation than a perverse and distasteful endeavor? I think everybody wants the Cubs to win every game, but we know that's not going to happen and they are going to lose more than they win, so the only upshot to that is how it affects what they can acquire in the future. It's harmless nonsense.
