    Wood is back on the mound after a long layoff. He's facing Corbin. Garza is gone and the newest guys are still in the minors. Soriano is still here, but Theo and Jed are supposedly in Phoenix trying to talk Soriano into leaving, ala Mr. Henderson trying to convince Harry to leave, or Arya getting rid of Nymeria.

    That was an odd final sentence. My guess is he was hinting at the idea that smart management has a better footing to stand on in negotiations if they know what really matters, and the players remain ignorant to their value.

    Baseball is the only one of these sports that lives in its past and glorifies it to the extent that they do. To this day the greatest baseball players discussions begins and ends with a whole bunch of dead guys that baby boomers grew up watching, or rather listening to on their radio under their covers blahblahblah. Footballs greatest players, with the exception of running backs, all play right now and the NFL is very happy about that. The hero worship in the NBA goes back to Jordan for most people and Kobe Bryant is practically an old timer. Hockey isn't on any of these lists, but outside of Montreal and Toronto, everybody worships at least guys who played in the 80's/90's (Gretzky Lemieux) and have been going gaga for it forever. Baseball is all about history, sanctity, myth making and the poetry of the game rather than just really good pitchers throwing to really good hitters. It stands to reason the sport that thrives on the memories of 60 year old men who all think they created their own success and who can't stand the young kids is more up in arms about steroids (a theoretically modern change to the game).

    I would guess one of them gets dealt, with an outside shot at 2. Just a guess. Yeah, well, a nice start may give him some leeway. He's probably going to be moved around the diamond a bit. He has the talent but he's probably going to be somewhat easily exploited, which will lead to plenty of days off. I don't see much of a good reason to do that soon. I don't see any player bringing back value. September should be fine. WHAT THE WHAT?!? Is this cycle just never going to end? Please let this cycle end. Nuts, moderately entertaining, probably a little letdown when it all settles out. 2015? Seriously?

    So the PTBNL is related to how well TEX does this season and not on whether they can sign Garza?

    God, Kaplan. Just try to be intelligent, just once. I mean, there is a chance that Mike Olt will turn out to be good. Thus, Bryant would move to the OF. But any of these guys could be moved elsewhere, get worse or get injured before a theoretical Bryant/Olt/Vitters spring training battle for 3B even comes close to fruition. So there is no point in pointing out they currently play the same position today and therefore insist Bryant has to move positions.

    Yeah, the bar for excellence is probably above what Rizzo did. Not sure what the point is on that one. Really? A guy hitting over 1.000 isn't a better example of "excelling" than a guy with serious defensive problems hitting in the .800's? Rizzo obviously was a better example of a player excelling at AAA than Vitters.

    Yeah, as much as I like Olt's potential, I see him as an attempt to get serviceable 3B numbers out of him before flipping him to make room for whomever his ready to take is place, whether it be Bryant, Baez, Vitters, Villanueva... whoever. even if olt turns out to be a successful rehab project, statements like that are just so absurdly dumb. i'm not sure why people can't help but be worried about what position guys might play in the majors when they are years and 3-4 levels of baseball away from the majors. In the case of Bryant though, one could reasonably expect that he won't take "years" to make the major leagues. At least, he shouldn't take years. And a few of those levels better just be brief stints.

    That's impossible, because Edwards > Olt He is, but he's also in Single-A, which means he's not contributing to the Cubs anytime soon. How far a guy is from the majors, or how low in the minor league system, doesn't preclude him from being the centerpiece of a trade.

    My predilection to doubt Vitters emerged long before his time in the majors. But then people need to mention that instead of using his time in the majors as proof of anything. But yeah, his doubters were out weeks before he was drafted, myself included. I wanted Wieters, too. However, Vitters has slowly developed into a hitter that should be able to stick in the majors for a long time, perhaps much of that time as an everyday player. His stint in the majors matters, as does his stint on the DL (at least the latest one). In order to stick in the majors as a starter for a long time you have to hit at a level appropriate for the position in which you play. If you are a 3B who can field well, you don't have to be great. If you aren't any good in the field, however, you really have to hit, and not just be competent.

Matt Garza might not be pitching but before you assume he has been traded you have to remember that Sheriff Arpaio may have just had him arrested.
