    Ah, ok. I didn't know that wasn't allowed. You're right, it is basically an injury clause. Makes sense that'd be verboten. I don't even see it as being all that necessary or useful. It's not like he's always missing lots of time. He's played in 15 or 16 games in almost every season of his career. And the full contract is already not guaranteed. He's gotten a knock from the meatball fans for being injury prone though. My only point in mentioning it would be that it could ease those concerns. I'm surrounded by anti-Cutler types at work...it's tiring. I don't think easing the concerns of that type of person is all that useful.

    Things like workout bonuses happen all the time. I'm not so sure games played bonuses exist.

    You never know with NFL contracts but I would think there's room to give enough guaranteed money to make $16-18m an option.

    Odd phrasing there. Are they saying he will look for $20m if they franchise him, but less if they don't? I'm still thinking that a sub $20m/per deal is possible and likely.

    The same way you start any conversation involving contract negotiations? This isn't going back to your wife after trying but failing to hook up with a supermodel. It's not awkward or panicking or anything weird at all.

    Nobody was talking about 1% of the total valuation. The only thing mentioned was profits. A lot of media outlets were saying "1% of the Longhorn Network". To me, that doesn't imply 1% of profits; it implies an equity stake. The media in general, and the sports media in particular, is horrible when it comes to specific language related to business issues. I would have to imagine it would be a profit-sharing situation, as an actual equity stake in a television network is an entirely different beast.

    That's some interesting logic, Joel. FWIW, Loxas is claiming the meeting is not about an extension. What do you mean interesting logic? If Cubs are meeting with Samardzija's people, what else would it be about besides an extension talk, and if they are talking extension, why wouldn't that suggest they aren't hearing what they want on trade market. I mean, I guess they could just be having a courtesy meeting to let his people know what sort of destination may be in his future, that seems less likely to me. Maybe they'd rather sign him and want to take one last crack at it before they trade him. Maybe, though I don't see how it is more of a logical conclusion than what Joel Sherman wrote. Even if you assume their preference is to sign him, that pretty much means it is because what they have seen on the trade market isn't as enticing as they would want to trade him.

    I don't think it is at all realistic to suggest somebody withhold their opinion about these rumors and just stick to discussing the "facts" of the rumors themselves. The fact is the Cubs are doing a horrible job fielding a competitive major league baseball team and have been doing so for many years. That fact will hang over any move they make, or any move they are rumored to be considering.

    No...just a good poster from PSD who happened to give his thoughts on Lake over there the same day NY asked here. And NY thinks he's a jack ass because he doesn't have a high opinion of Lake. Lake was 23 last season. According to people who know a lot more than I do he has tremendous ability. His career is just getting started. He more than held his own during his brief time with the Cubs, even with his bad approach. I like sneakypower's assessment a couple of pages back. Lake may turn out to be terrible or he may not, but definitive statements at this point in time are jack ass comments.
