    I used to love him and think he will make somebody a great OC. Do you think he gets another HC shot down the road? This year was a catastrophe, but he also was at the helm for every respectable season the Texans have ever had. Unless he turns around a new offense in a hurry, it will take a while. But yes, I would assume that a few years of quality OC work will put him right back in the running. Pete Carroll and Belichick have both done wonders for guys looking for a second shot.

    A hell of a lot smaller assumption than somebody stating that "he's built his own brand so this is no different or harder".

    "How somebody looks" in instructs is a worthless topic barely worthy of a blurb at the end of a "state of the organization" offseason update. There's no point in going out searching for worthless quotes for their own story. And there is nothing wrong with waiting until you have access to the actual mouthpiece of the organization. The "our beat writers suck" interpretation to explain the timing of this note is just ridiculous.

    I completely thought he'd be a figurehead. No idea why someone would trust him to actually negotiate their 9 figure contract...especially in a field he probably knows nothing about. Only knowing his public persona, I'm not at all surprised he thought he could step in and negotiate with a professional baseball team. He's built a brand worth half a billion dollars. There's no reason he can't negotiate with a baseball team, it's not rocket science. Sounds like his celebrity status may have hurt him this time. He's built a brand that has nothing to do with negotiating the unique contracts you deal with in baseball. And he's been surrounded by yes men who praise his every step. Every time he's been in a business meeting he's dealt with people who wanted to butter him up in an effort to use his persona for their own profit. In this situation, Jay Z can provide absolutely nothing of value to the people on the other side of the table.

    those have been over for a long time. Wonder why this is just now news? Because our beat writers suck and probably don't even know what instructs are or to report on an important guy like Vizcaino there when he pitches and it's probably the first time Theo's been interviewed since he threw/specifically asked about him? I don't see how the beat writers "suck" when they don't have access to Theo to ask about these types of things. And Vizcaino isn't really important.

    These things always come down to money. A NTC is only valuable in as much as it is a negotiating tool that can get you more money. Why are you assuming the numbers would be leaked but the NTC battle wouldn't?

    I feel like you aren't getting what people are saying. The way you get a young guy to agree to a team friendly deal is by offering him the first "you can retire on that" contract of his life. Most of these guys got maybe a couple million dollars to sign and have made the minimum for a couple years. They have a large incentive to sign early, and will be willing to give up a free agent year or two exactly because this contract will set him up for life just in case he gets hurt before free agency. Jeff Samardzija never went through that process. He got his huge guarantee very early in his career and never went through a season making the minimum. He's made in excess of $2m in every year of his career and even if he gets hurt tomorrow, he should be able to live a comfortable life without ever working again. He has less incentive to sign that extension for below market. And the stories we have heard about the Cubs offer indicate that it is way below market. You can go ahead and think that what he made shouldn't change the equation. But it does when it comes to how willing Samardzija will be to settle for less than the maximum.

    Huh? His initial contract wasn't actually all that huge. He got $1m, with a bonus for giving up football, but they actually ripped up that contract and signed a new one the next season when he actually did give up football. There was no "five years later deal" other than the series of one year deals he's been on under Theo's regime.

    The vast majority of your surplus value is going to come from your pre-arbitration players. You should be able to continuously exploit this supply line throughout the course of any one 10-year contract. But even if you somehow do not, you're still trying to win baseball games and, at worst, cutting down on the profits of a billionaire for a couple years.

    I don't see a lot of people making that assumption. The conversation was about unnecessarily fretting that Theo may leave before the team starts to win.

    10 years is much more the issue than 23-24mil per. Very much this. Also, giving anyone a contract that only your optimistic projections having him be worth is a really bad idea. There's almost zero chance of getting any surplus value from that deal. The goal is not to get surplus value.

    Yeah, considering he's already made millions in his life, there's very little incentive to settle for such a relatively low number.

    Kind of missing the important part which is where were the defenders in relation to Forte. He might not have had as much space as the receiver. God I hated that play. Was it the throw or a just a receiver slip? Can't remember.

    It is? I thought it was the state of the entire organization that he was in charge of. So the state of the minor leagues don't matter in evaluating the job he's done? Am I off base in saying that's what you're implying, if not overtly saying? Oh it's absolutely the case that the state of the minor leagues pales in comparison to the major league success when evaluating front office work. Anybody can build a minor league system if their only mandate is to build a minor league system. Winning at the major league level is the hard part and the only part that actually matters.

    But Camp walks more guys, strikes out less and hasn't actually ridden that same line as well as Mujica.
