  1. Not only does he not get fired like pretty much everyone predicted prior to the season, but he gets job security. Once they announced he was returning, an extension was inevitable. A 1-year deal would have suggested very little faith, so a 2-year makes lots of sense. If the multi-years run beyond that though, it's pretty surprising.
  2. Mark Gonzalez tweeted a bunch of Tribune ones yesterday. They are kind of meh.
  3. As a Cleveland Brown, yes, you are right. Not really playoffs. Closest thing we have right now to an NFL offseason thread. I think the NFL coaching carousel thread is the de facto NFL offseason thread at this point. The carousel itself has slowed down.

  5. http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/ioc-s-mario-pescante-slams-u-s-for-gay-athletes-in-sochi-1.2498901 Oh those progressive Europeans.
  6. Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 3m Jets and head coach Rex Ryan have reached agreement on a multi-year extension, according to team and league sources.
  7. What? If given a choice to move to a place like LA or New York, athletes will rarely choose Chicago. It's why I think it's hilarious that the Bulls are actually trying to clear cap space to lure big time free agents again. It won't work. The last time a Chicago team was able to lure a big time free agent (Soriano), we had to blow every other team out of the water in terms of dollars and years. Peppers could be considered a major free agent, but I have no idea what his market was like. Peppers wasn't just considered a major free agent, he was one. Muhsin Muhammed was also a major free agent. The Bears have signed several big money free agents over the years, and when the Cubs try to they also do the same. Brian Campbell was the biggest free agent prize the year he moved, and came to Chicago, same with Hossa. Everybody says players will always choose LA or NY over Chicago, except for when they don't. As to the Soriano comment, is this opposed to how LA and NY lowball guys and get them for discounts because players just want to play for them so badly?
  8. Sesmic? Is Billy Joel putting on weight again? Only the good die young, so the Cubs will live forever.
  9. Just because the Bulls can't recruit a free agent doesn't mean the Cubs/Bears/Blackhawks can't do it.
  10. I could be totally wrong, but I do not think the convention has generally been used as a place/time to make announcements. The announcements generally come beforehand and are celebrated/discussed at the convention.
  11. If it's true, I'd guess it's being announced at the convention. Yeah, something huge that's not player related at this point makes the most sense being announced at the convention. It makes more sense to me being announced today, prior to the convention, so it dominates headlines going into the start of the convention.
  12. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the draw on him was he could theoretically be a de facto assistant defensive coordinator who brings lots of experience at the top of (a very shallow) food chain. I don't see any direct relationship with Tucker in the past, unless you want to count them both coaching AFC teams in Florida at the same time. I think they are lacking in defensive leadership, both in terms of on field captains (Peppers is a bit of a lone wolf, Briggs is a second banana and Tillman is gone) and coaches (Tucker has DC experience but he was running his boss's defense in each instance, as they were both DC themselves, while Jon Hoke is probably the most experienced). The rest of the defensive staff are either just getting introduced to the coaching world, or their experience is in Canada.
  13. It never has and it never will.
  14. Because it's "part of the game" and presumably they will claim it cuts down on injuries.
  15. Come on Buster, you are a professional writer.
  16. Interesting. He sucks as a head coach, but was LB coach for the Cowboys earlier in the 2000s. Also Dolphins DC. Gets a lot of credit for the development of Demarcus Ware as an OLB. Also of note, he's primarily has coached 3-4 defenses in the NFL. Odd hire. He's old and has been a coach since the 70's but he only has six seasons in the NFL, from 2005-2010. He's been a tight end coach as well as d line coach and DC. Plus college head coach. Certainly this isn't a guy in high demand, having been fired in September.
  17. You don't know what was guaranteed. We also don't know if the $300 mil thing wasn't just completely made up [expletive]. So we are just debating the "idea" of $300 million over 10 versus $215 over 7. If I'm an organization and I need to lock up my super Ace. I will chose the 7 years with 6th year opt out over 10 years every day, and Sunday too. as would I
  18. Yeah, if they're leaking things I would think they're setting themselves up to bolt after the 5 year mark for sure. Not sure why they would need to set themselves up for that. They can just walk away after 5 years. A whole bunch of reasons, first and foremost to make it look like it's not their fault if there isn't a bunch of winning going on at that point. Sure, but you leak that now and the story dies before you hit the market. If anything, I would view them leaking the information as an arm twist of Ricketts and/or the business people.

  20. Who knows if it was $300m guaranteed, or if the last $50+ was achieved through options becoming guaranteed with stipulations? Who knows how this one is structured. It averages over $30m per year, but could be even higher over the first 5 years.
  21. Only? Was expecting him to break 250. Yeah.. weren't there reports that he turned down $300m? That was probably a 10 or 11 year type deal, without the 5-year opt out.
  22. As a counterpoint, one would think you could pretty easily point to the Dominican Academy, the spending to penalties in IFA and up to penalties in the draft, the growth in headcount in the FO, the Bloomberg tech they're licensing for video, etc. I honestly have no idea what Passan is talking about if he's not talking about MLB payroll. Well the comment was that they aren't getting the budget they expected. So while the Cubs are spending in those areas, perhaps the FO was led to believe the budget was even higher than what they have? Yeah, it's an overall budget thing.
