  1. In a word, yes. He'll be here for a couple years at the most, and of all the free agents out there in the first place the vast majority won't be signing with the Bears anyway.
  2. The likelihood of finding a better football fit for the cost is very low. But if it's that important to you to not be the team to break the blackball, so be it. Are you out of your mind or suffering from poor reading comprehension? I'm being a smartass based on what appears to be you hiding behind the "it's not a true blackball situation" and "I don't want the distractions" defense.
  3. I think you are misinterpreting the notion of "blackball", which is probably due to people misusing it. There isn't a decrease coming down from on high saying you cannot sign the guy. The point is the league is filled with people who are outright bigots, as well as cowards who hide behind the BS storyline of "distractions". That combines to mean limited to zero opportunities, which is effectively being blackballed.
  4. Multiple platoons is not a good thing. Platoons just mean you don't have good enough players and are trying to mask a lot of weaknesses. They do not work out as well as we'd hope in theory. That's a silly stigma. If you can get more production by platooning rather than having one guy you play against both sides, you should do it. Multiple platoons is not a bad thing. Ask the A's. It's not a stigma, it's the situation the Cubs are in. They only have "platoons" because they don't have good enough players to fill positions.
  5. Smart dudes know how to toe the company line, right? Sure, but if the NFL doesn't want you around(conspiracy obviously, that can't be proven) do you go against them? The other question is how it affects your locker room. And yes, this IS stupid, but it's unfortunately the way things are in the NFL. Maybe everyone IS fine with it, but maybe I just don't have enough faith in humanity, I doubt it's the case. In fact, didn't Briggs say something silly a while back? Is Rhodes good enough to take a chance on if it actually pisses off some guys already on the team? If it possibly affected the way even one future FA could potentially look at the franchise? I'm all for signing the guy, but there are plenty of meatball players out there that would need to be considered. It's not the NFL front office telling people to stay away from him. That's not how this works. It's not going to affect the locker room in a meaningful way. Everybody who has every played in the NFL has played with gay teammates.

  8. Like Peyton Manning?

  10. As smart as Emery and Trestman are, I doubt Rhodes is an option, since it appears he's been blackballed. If they were smart wouldn't they be more likely than the rest of pick up the "blackballed" player that the rest of the league is ignoring? What would be so smart about following along with the rest of the sheep with Rhodes? I think what he actually meant is despite how smart they are...otherwise it doesn't really make sense. Ohhhh, I see.

  12. The problem with the "just don't let Theriot" happen again theory is that even if you find a way to specifically address the Theriot situation, there are other Theriot situations ready to pop up in other positions. There is no depth here, and there is no outfield. There are multiple positions that could end up providing bottom of the barrel type production and over the course of a six month season, you have to expect setbacks to your plan. If your plan is to just be less embarrassing, that doesn't leave much wiggle room.
  13. I'm looking forward to and expecting rebounds from Castro and (to a lesser/different extent) Rizzo and a Baez call up. I expect better from Samardzija too. Those things alone would make 2014 much better for me than last year, regardless of record. I'm not sure how you can say "regardless of record", it's almost as if you throw that in there to reassure yourself you don't mind all the losing. But if the record doesn't improve despite Castro and Rizzo rebounding, plus better from Samardzija and a Baez call up, then some other disaster has occurred.
  14. If we get Tanaka and keep Shark, I challenge you to explain how it could possibly be worse. I'm guessing the point is that here we are, right now, not the end of this month in a timeline that actually winds up with the Cubs getting Tanaka. And right now they don't have Tanaka, plus it doesn't look particularly good for their chances to get Tanaka.
  15. You should like the part where Jay Cutler is under contract a lot more than you like the part about being able to cut him.
  16. Unless he's magically learned from his awful mistakes in Chicago, Tampa is going to regret giving him final say on personnel. That's what ruined the 2007 draft, when drafting for the system took precedence over drafting talent.
  17. KONY 2014? Better than 2012 version
  18. What is spotrac and why would the Bears negotiate a deal that gives them a $22m cap hit this year after talking about how damaging the one year cap hit is for franchise tags? It looks like spotrac is just re-posting overthecap.com info http://www.overthecap.com/cap.php?Name=Jay%20Cutler&Position=QB&Team=Bears I personally like OtC more than Spotrac. To answer jersey's question: The reason is because they feel they have a lot of flexibility and cap room this year. By front loading the contract, it will give them more room in later seasons. While we talked about the one year impact of a franchise tag for Cutler, in the end we gave it more weight than the front office did. The one year impact was seen as more favorable, and allows Emery to limit the multi-year impact. Also, while some have commented on the contract as overpaying, which at first I agreed with, I can now see the reason behind the overpayment. In order to get Jay to agree to a contract that is very favorable to the team after four years, they had to overpay for those four years. In the end I feel it was a very smart move by Emery. It was the front office that talked about it, not us.
  19. Leslie Frazier to TB
  20. oh geez, well that's good for him.
  21. What is spotrac and why would the Bears negotiate a deal that gives them a $22m cap hit this year after talking about how damaging the one year cap hit is for franchise tags? I'm not sure which one is right, but even if we've spent 30 mill of cap space on 2 players for this year, we've still got another 15 mill currently and another 15, if we cut Bennett, Bush, and Peppers. Last year, I remember Martellus and Bushrod had very small 1st year cap hits, so maybe it's a strategy to offset things like that. Sign your own FA one way and structure the other FA the opposite, since they're more likely to need the signing bonus anyway? They also need to add more players to the roster than anybody but the Raiders, right? They have space this year and they need that space.
