There's little to nothing that Alcantara could do this year (within reason) that would make me deem a rebounded Castro expendable. The other two guys, given their status and pedigree skill sets? Sure. I'm ready to deem Castro expendable right now, but apparently we want to wait for his stats to rebound and assume the market price will reflect it when they do. That's fine, but there's two different discussions here. I can see the argument for him being expendable right now. But if he actually does rebound in 2014 it is a different story.

Someone's being used suboptimally in that situation. Bryant may be a 3-win 3b but only a 2-win RF. Much like the goal is not to pay the least amount of dollars per win, or fielding the most efficient roster. The goal is also not to avoid any sub optimal situation. Insisting on trading away quality young cost controlled players to avoid a sub optimal utilization of another player is a good way to throw away production.

Sure, we could do that. But that leaves us with a SS who hasn't adapted well to our preferred offensive approach and is probably the only asset on the team with the value to return the kind of pitching we need to be competitive in 2015/16. If you have 4 3 WAR IF and a 3 WAR RF all under 25 do you really need that great of pitching to be competitive in 2015/16? At that point, keep the runs flowing and let average pitching get the job done.

But what if we have a full set of other 3-win infielders? Full set? For one, we won't. For two, that's why God made the outfield.

I love Tillman, but Bailey is clearly a better player. I think Bailey is in the Hall, Tillman is not. Tillman might make it because he had a "thing". His ability to force a turnover is so unique and consistent, it might be something that gets him in if it's close. That type of guy probably needs a Super Bowl win to make it.

He opted out after 7 years of the original 10 year deal with the Rangers, but I'm not sure if he ever got to actual free agency in terms of timing of when the deal was signed. He certainly could have signed with anyone that off season though. Oh that's right. He opted out, and then fired Boras because of the timing, then negotiated directly with the Steinbrenners (and no other teams) with a Goldman Sachs exec. -
And the quality of a major league career tells you nothing about how well that guy can coach.

At least one of them, if not both, will hit the open market. They aren't going to take discounts and they aren't going to sign early long term deals. I'm betting neither of them do until well past 30. Neither of those teams are small market teams. Harper's agent is Scott Boras. I can't remember a time where Boras had his client sign a long-term extension prior to free agency, but maybe I'm wrong. Based on Boras's practice, it wouldn't surprise me if the Nationals had to pay a heavy premium to keep him away from free agency. Didn't Boras have ARod sign an extension with the Yankees? Or was that what led to them parting ways? They aren't going to get team friendly discounts, but it can be signed.

So he's very progressive when it comes to gay marriage/rights but a regular PTA member when it comes to marijuana. The title says, "before Super Bowl", but of course, it was days before, not during warmups. Guys getting high for kickoff would bother me, but days before? Are you kidding me? Who cares?

Well yeah, he's the quintessential meathead/toughguy/jock personality who also happens to play middle linebacker. That's going to make him dislike every QB, whether they play on his team or another. I'm sure Butkus was the same way, especially at that age. But back then there wasn't as much movement from team to team by players so he may have been a bit more supportive of his own guy. Urlacher also worshiped at the alter of Lovie, and he probably sees Emery/Cutler as major reasons why Lovie was fired.

That seems like an unlikely explanation. Brian has not know you don't get paid by popularity and that QBs make more than middle linebackers. Urlacher doesn't like Cutler. He spent his career on a team with a defensive mindset that had to play through incompetent QB play. Toward the end of his career Urlacher had the opportunity to actually play with a competent QB, and probably thought he had a shot to win a Super Bowl. But when all was said and done, Urlacher's career ended with a string of mediocre seasons and Cutler was unable to salvage it. So, he probably felt let down by Jay as well as just genuinely disliking Cutler's personality.

Because he thinks he has very limited upside and that all the guys above him presumably have a higher upside. And he places greater value on upside than just the ability to make a team. Also, he probably differentiates between "looking" like a lock and actually being a lock, because, of course, he is not a lock.

It wouldn't be about 60 at bats in March. So it'd be about the last 400 PAs with the Rangers and Cubs AAA teams (.745 OPS with the Rangers, .207 BAPIP with the Cubs) completely overshadowing the prior 1,000 MILB PAs? Even with a widely reported medical issue going on? Look, maybe his eyes/head will never be normal again, and if that's the case, that sucks for him. But that's something the medical team has to decide, not Theo looking at him for 3 weeks next month and declaring him broken. If he's healthy...he needs to have a shot somewhere. The upside is too high. I didn't say cut the guy. The odds are he's not going to do anything of value. The point is you don't need to fret over a "logjam" at 3B in AAA. If he can't make this team, he is not a priority. -
