Essentially, he ignored the analytical tools other teams used. The money was there. The payroll increased steadily throughout the era and the Cubs climbed from the middle of the NL to the top. They invested in the farm system but they foolishly tried to copy the Braves by building with pitching and while that did eventually work, it lasted about 1.5 years because pitchers are pitchers. They were miserable acquirers of hitters. They could not draft and develop them, and constantly had to go out to the market to buy them which was not cost effective. They lucked out with Sosa who covered for a lot of weaknesses but they hurt by Hendry's old school ways, including hiring a potentially more old school coach when the team should have been at their best. -
so he has a 3.3m cap hit this year then it goes up to 4.55. They still have a lot of cap work to do.

This move saves very little from what the cap situation was a day ago. People factored in ~4m for saad and they took back players.

I really wished they traded sharp when he still had value He was so tradable for a couple years there and they wouldn't have missed a beat.

So does the saad offer sheet still come in or does that other team not even bother? I assume Columbus has plenty of cap space which would make an aggressive offer less useful.

Odds are, nobody was willing to take Patrick Sharp or if they were, the Blackhawks weren't willing to give him up for free. As I've said, Patrick Sharp has been horrific since January 2014 and teams know this and know he's not getting any younger. The Blackhawks demands for him were always outrageous. The reported demand a were probably not close to true.

Wasserstrom predated the MacPhail era and he went from the guy who distributed media guides to the "information analyst" gig while Andy was still there (circa 2003). They probably hired a data entry guy for him. -
