  1. I'm rooting for them to send Murton to AAA. He's wasting away with these occasional starts, and may be pressing to make something happen in his limited appearances. Let him play everyday in AAA. If they find somebody to take Jones then call him up. Otherwise this is not productive.
  2. Black guy? Seriously though, how bad does it look when the manager gets busted with a DUI, then a player "oversleeps", possibly due to booze, gets in a "minor" accident, possibly due to booze, and then dies in a DUI? I would hope this wakes some people up to the problem.
  3. 69 thru 5 for Hill, he's officially cruising. And in a related story, the Cubs apparantly did not figure out Duke in their one decent outing against him last year. And they continue to suck vs LHP, despite the front office and managerial stance that they need more LH bats in the lineup. The OPS vs LHP is 111 points below the OPS vs RHP. Get more guys who can hit lefties!
  4. True, but 35 through 2 with the pitcher due to leadoff isn't unmanagable. If he gets through this inning with just 10 pitches, that's an average of 15 per, and a 7 inning/105 pitch outing. Pretty good. 58 thru 4 for Hill, not a bad pace.
  5. this is newsworthy. You people are following the Cardinals game and talking about how they seem to not have their heads in the game, so if you think ESPN showing the game and talking about Hancock is pathetic, then you should probably stop talking about it too. But if you're interested in this game, don't you think other people are too? I guess the major news networks shouldn't have covered 9/11, Katrina and the tsunami so thoroughly... after all, people died and they were making ratings money off those people. Not to hijack our game thread - but I'd make the easy argument that us discussing it privately on the internet is NOT THE SAME as nationally televising it to millions of people. It's a baseball game that was supposed to be aired anyway. People are always looking for reasons to complain about ESPN, and other media outlets for airing things. If people watch it, then it's worthy of being aired. You can't blame them for this.
  6. They just showed Kip Wells just randomly staring around the stadium while on the mound. Looked odd.

  8. Did the locals cops give a break to the hometown athlete? Oversleeping for a game is a sure sign of somebody with issues. Somebody wrote earlier this year that while steroids were a problem, drunk driving was an even bigger problem with the players. We've seen Tony get busted this year, and now a guy with multiple accidents who can't get to the field in time was reportedly drinking before driving in a crash. That writer may have been right on. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=law/070327&sportCat=mlb
  9. If Floyd wasn't here and Pie wasn't up, the OF would be Soriano, Murton and Jones, and I don't think many people would be clamoring for another guy. And if it was, it wouldn't be the redundent Floyd. Hendry bashers blame Hendry for the sub .500 record during his tenure because he is responsible for everything. Excusing him for one bad signing because he made another good one makes no sense.
  10. I know a girl who is a terrible driver, admits to being a terrible driver, has been in numerous "incidents", and basically just accepts that she's a terrible driver and won't do anything about it. Drives me nuts. She's the type of person who literally has no idea what is going on outside her car. She's not a speeder or anything, just incapable of seeing the world outside her narrow view. That is the most dangerous driver in my opinion. Far worse than the guy going 90.
  11. After a late 90's fad, Krispy Kreme has fallen hard from grace across the country. DD is loved by most.
  12. Is the movement of a fastball really something that increases over time? I always thought that guys either had movement on their fastball, or they didn't. I've read some things that most of that crazy movement is in the younger arms, and over time that stuff tends to straighten out. But that is offset by an older pitcher learning how to pitch better. Anyway, is there much history of guys in their 20's who don't have movement but acquire it over time?
  13. I think it comes down to his history in the college game. College baseball is all about rah-rah, tough guy, throw the fastball by him, hit to get on, let your pitchers throw as long as necessary to win, it's called hitting strategy. As bad as "conventional wisdom" in MLB is, it seems to be much worse in college. As a guy who made his way up the ladder via coaching college kids and then scouting them, Jim was bound to be one of the last of the crowd to be introduced to new ideas. College teams play so many fewer games that the results of any one at-bat, or pitch, is so much greater than in the 162 game major league season, and I think that is part of his infatuation with "clutch" and "timely hitting". In college it's harder to brush off one bad at-bat in the clutch or a handful, because they don't have 6 months of back to back games to make up for it and see the numbers even out. So it's just important to get that hit right now every single at-bat. I really think that Jim is still influenced by that past college coaching exposure.
  14. Your first general point was right though. I can't stand how many drivers simply don't pay attention to what else is out there. So many people just focus on their route, and the car in front of them. You have to try and anticipate what other cars are going to do, including the really dumb things. You shouldn't drive in the left lane, that isn't the fast lane, that is the passing lane. When you see something on the shoulder up ahead, assume something might happen. Merge into the middle lane (or other lane if it's just 2), slow down if you are next to another car. Always create space between you and other cars. I know California is known for traffic, but NY and NJ aren't exactly sparsely populated with cars. All the time I see things like cars in the right lane that do not accomodate other cars merging into the road, they don't even see them coming onto the road. People pull out into traffic when they know they can make it, without thinking about whether or not that move will force other cars to adjust (or maybe they do think that, and don't care).
  15. He's admitted to a personal grudge against Angelo, and he's had problems with Bears people in the past. Something I thought was really funny a couple years ago, he went an entire season without picking a Bears game in the 8-10 picks he makes every week. Not that he never picked the Bears, but he never picked a game they played in. And there's no rhyme or reason to what he picks, he'll focus on headline games, but he picks stinkers as well. I think he just ignores them.
  16. Haven't the Cubs beaten twice in a row? He had owned the Cubs in his first four starts against them (back he owned everyone for awhile), but I think the Cubs, like everyone else apparently, will figure him out tonight. Murton should definitely start - he owns Duke. Well, he's 4-1 with a 1.40 ERA against them. Last year he was 2-1 with a 1.86. The last time they faced him, the Cubs won, but they couldn't touch him, with 0 ER in 7 innings (Cubs won it off Grabow in the 8th). The outing prior to that, however, the Cubs roughed him up for 5 in 6 IP and he lost. He had beaten them twice in the first few weeks of the season. The one time they did beat him, they scored 4 in the first on a bunch of singles and groundballs. Then he shut them down for the next 5 innings until Murton went deep with a solo shot. So, not sure if they did figure him out, since it was basically one inning of back to back to back to back ground ball singles that got to him and then he had 12 more solid innings against them. But yes, Murton should start.
  17. fans don't vote for pitchers Which is very bizarre. All Star games are stupid anyway, and I don't really care about the voting. But what is the point of letting fans stuff ballots for hitters and not pitchers? Do they think fans aren't capable of judging what a quality pitcher is? It's all part of making the All-Star game as pointless and archaic as possible. Seriously. Home field advantage. In the Series. Decided in an exhibition game. Idiotic. It's not like deciding it randomly was much better. Well, it wasn't decided randomly, everybody knew which league would have it going into the year. It rotated, that's not random.
  18. To accomplish two things, breaking up the lefties and allowing him to face an inferior offense at home. Another thing is that by not using your 5th starter until you "have to" you are not building in any extra rest for the other starters. Keeping guys on 4 days rest is great, but it could be helpful to give them an extra day or two here or there. Throwing Guzman on the 6th allows for a little more rest for some of these guys. It's debatable which is the best course of action.
  19. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the Bears draft, but D is pretty ridiculous. The national media generally hated the Jones trade and are holding the Briggs situation, as well as the Lovie and Rivera situations against the Bears. I'm not getting the same "terrible offseason" vibe that these guys have. Another national trend that came up during the draft is the completely contradictory stance by so many that teams don't stand a chance in today's NFL without a good to great franchise QB, and that Rex Grossman isn't even close to being a good QB. I don't know for sure, but I have to believe that winning the NFC championship counts as the Bears having a chance last year. And they are currently the favorite, or among the favorites to make the super bowl again this year, meaning people think they have a chance. Yet according to these people, the Bears shouldn't have a chance since Rex can't be a franchise QB.
  20. I say who cares if he was drinking or not. It's very tragic and very sad regardless. It is very sad and tragic regardless. But it's important to acknowledge the drinking and driving, if, in fact, he was drinking and driving. So, I would say everybody should care. It's an ongoing national problem that people can solve on their own with an ounce of common sense. It's nothing but stupidity that fails to prevent such tragedies. I see no reason why people can't speculate about the circumstances, considering what happened and what has emerged so far.
  21. I don't. I'm pretty certain he's not. But that's okay, he can still contribute by being a .360 OBP guy making $350,000 on the bench. He's better than our other options (Izturis, Cedeno). Probably, but that doesn't mean it makes sense to play him every day. They probably need to try and set-up a platoon and hope one guys gets hot now and again.
  22. I'm not sure what that means. But I do see the point in trading a DE, if you get value. Brown and Wale are both disappointments. I wouldn't have a problem if either one was traded, assuming they get something like a 2008 3rd round pick or better. It would be a benefit both for cap space reasons, as well as maintaining the influx of talent in the future. If they do somehow end up dealing Briggs along with an end, that could potentially bring in a windfall of young talent. I don't have a problem with them keeping both guys either, as it could help to give those vets competition (even if Anderson's emergence didn't seem to light a spark in either guy). Now that the draft is over, it's time to focus on bringing in some depth (hopefully offensive lineman) via cap casualty type free agents.
  23. I don't. I'm pretty certain he's not. But that's okay, he can still contribute by being a .360 OBP guy making $350,000 on the bench.
  24. At least it's refreshing to see a move made quickly, rather than the Dusty philosophy of letting a horrid player like Neifi start game after game with nothing being done about it. Agreed. I just hope Theriot continues his hot streak and makes it where the only part of Izturis' uniform that gets dirty is the seat of his pants from sitting on the bench. Hot streak? His line is .188/.188/.188 in the last 7 games. He probably needs a day or two off.
