  1. http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6337 I'm all for firing Hendry, but what does this story have to do with it?
  2. Maybe their organization preaches patience, OBP, and the importance of the walk. We shouldn't get too excited yet. Fontenot's been up for all of two weeks, Pie has hit well since his 2nd callup, and Theriot's been mired in a slump recently. None of these guys are superstar prospects. Still, they are a better option than Izturis, and definitely show how stupid it is to pay the likes of Neifi Perez 3M per year. Actually Pie is a pretty big prospect Yeah, Pie is definitely a star prospect, in terms of potential. He may never be a superstar, but he could end up flirting with the 900 OPS level out of CF, which would be perennial all star kind of production. Theriot and Fontenot are not ideal starters. I like them both as bench players and occasional starters. Or, if you fill the rest of your lineup with studs they are economical filler. In 2008 I'd like to see Patterson, Fontenot and Theriot battle it out for 2B and utility roles, assuming they get a real SS. Or, if they find a real RF, then those three plus Cedeno could probably adequately fill the 2B and SS positions.
  3. Something is definitely up with Barrett. He comes across as a real mimbo from the start. But he's already argued multiple times with teammates and coaches. I think the team thinks he's dumb as a box of rocks and are started to get annoyed by his over enthusiasm.
  4. Blanco is also 36 years old. He's logged a good amount of time behind the plate, appears to be a horrible athlete and is not in good shape. Add in the fact that he's already banged up and it may be a stretch to assume more playing time would mean better numbers. I don't think there's a long list of crappy catchers that maintained their numbers through their mid 30's.
  5. I thought you couldn't change position players midweek. What is the rule on this? MM is switching out guys left and right and has most of his points from guys on the bench now.
  6. I wouldn't call that worst case scenario. Worst case is Murton doesn't regain his stroke, Floyd scuffles but racks up just enough service time to guarantee his option, and Jones stays. Even if Floyd is great for 2-3 weeks, his chances of reaching those goals are not great. Right, but that's not really the point. The point is this move hasn't solved anything for us, long term. And, in my opinion, makes us worse. No it hasn't solved anything longterm. But it sets the table to figure out the RF problem. They weren't going to give Murton more time until he showed something, and he's not going to show something until he plays a lot. The only spot for that to happen is AAA. I don't see how it makes them worse. They sent down their 6th OF who wasn't getting any playing time but was pretty bad whenever he did play.
  7. Thats a good start. \:D/ So with him out what can the lineup look like? 7- Soriano 8- Pie 3- Lee 9- Floyd 5- DeRosa 4- Fontenot 6- Izturis 2- Hill Wow, that would be ugly.

  9. I agree, but it's still an easy catch for Barrett too, since it's just rolling in. It really isn't easy with a catcher's mitt preparing to take on a collision. They are designed to receive 90 mph balls on the fly or pad the hand when blocking balls in the dirt, not to field ground balls.
  10. I share your feelings, but think this is the best, for now. The key is making sure Floyd is the one playing everyday, and not Jones. Building up his trade value is not working. Trying to get him to regain his form is not working. Jacque stinks, Floyd at least stands a chance of putting up some numbers. I'm fine with letting Murton play everyday in AAA for a few weeks, get his stroke back working with Joshua, and then call him up once Hendry straightens out the Jones problem. My problem with this is - what happens if Murton kills the ball in AAA and JJ is gone in 2/3 weeks? You bring him up and platoon him with Floyd so he gets 1 or 2 starts a week? What needs to happen is give JJ to anyone that will take him, let Murton start every day and make Floyd a reserve (spot starting). Sending Murton down to AAA doesn't fix our problem b/c you still have to get rid of JJ and Floyd (or convince Floyd to be a bench player) in order to bring Murton back up. Once Murton returns he's got to play 2 out of 3 games at least. If Floyd plays everyday for the next month, he's going to be hurting big time by then, and it will be easy to sit him for Murton.
  11. The problem here is that it brings a much larger chance of Floyd's option vesting. Do you really want an overpriced, declining Cliff Floyd on this team in '08? I sure as hell don't. Floyd would have to average 3.17 AB's a game the rest of the year for even his first option to vest. I'm sure they won't play him against all the left-handers (when Aramis comes back, DeRosa will probably play some RF against LHP) and then when Murton comes back later in the year, there isn't that big of a chance that Floyd could have that many AB's to have the option kick in. I'm too tired to remember-is his vesting option PA's or AB's? Cliff Floyd of 1 year/$3M (2007), plus 2008 mutual option signed as a free agent 1/07 2008 option guaranteed with 425 PAs or 100 games started in 2007 performance bonuses: 2007: $4.5M for PAs & time on active 25-man roster 2008: for PAs, bringing 2-year total to as much as $17.5M Would anybody ever do one tied to ABs? Talk about incentives to be impatient at the plate.
  12. The problem here is that it brings a much larger chance of Floyd's option vesting. Do you really want an overpriced, declining Cliff Floyd on this team in '08? I sure as hell don't. No, definitely not. It's a balancing act. Floyd has to play more than Jones though, especially now that Ramirez is down. Hopefully in a month we're in a position where we either have a brand new real RF, or Murton gets called up to get most of the time with Jones gone. Floyd's pace has slown down of late, as far as building up service time. 3 games and 7 ABs in June. He's not going to get 100 starts this year, and I don't see him getting to 425 PA unless he starts everyday. He's got 99 more games to 303 PA or about 72 starts. I think they can prevent that while still maximizing his worth to the team for the rest of June, at least while Ramirez is down.

  14. It's not about getting every at bat. It's about getting a reasonable amount. In August and September last year he had 82 and 92 at bats. In April and May of this year he had 44 and 61. He's had 14 in June. He's not in a platoon, he's been the 6th OF. It's so blatantly obvious you'd have to purposefully look away from the facts to think this hasn't been the root cause.
  15. No, we don't need a 13 man staff, but after the overuse this weekend and last night's game, it is what it is. The shame is that Eyre is taking up a roster spot and Lou won't even use the guy, and that of all the struggling OFers, Jones is the worst and still the one getting most of the at bats. Assuming Izturis, DeRosa and Fontenot start, the bench is likely to be Hill, Theriot, Pagan and Jones/Floyd. Quite pathetic. They desperately need Floyd starting and need him to play really well for the next two weeks.
  16. I don't see how anybody could possibly think it's not about the lack of consistent time.
  17. I thought of Gallagher as well, but he did pitch last night, 1/3rd of an inning according to the box score.
  18. Big Matt Murton fan, but I'm completely in favor of this move. I wish it was done a month ago though. He needs to play everyday. The problem is now they have 13 pitchers and 3 non catching bench players.
  19. Piggy isn't on the 40 man, is he? Is Rapada? Pignatiello is not, Rapada is.
  20. Barring a DL move it's either the release of Eyre or Gallagher demotion.
  21. You have to wonder if that's going to be possible (making the big club next year). There's still a chance Jim Hendry is the GM next season. If the sale doesn't go through, or if it stalls until early 2008, there may be no time for the new owner to hire everybody he wants. If Jim is the GM, is he likely to let Barrett walk or try and extend his little pet project? Blanco is going to be here, unless the injury somehow forces him to retire. Even if Barrett does walk, will Jim or any other GM be comfortable with a bad backup (Blanco) being backed up by a rookie (Soto)? There is a good chance they go after a Damian Miller type to fill the void. I'd go with Soto/Blanco (unless I could get rid of Blanco) and spend the savings on solidifying the other 7 positions. Let the catcher bat 8th in a solid lineup and I'll live with a sub 100 OPS+.
  22. Speaking of the front page, perhaps it's time to do away with the headlines section. If things aren't going to get updated regularly why not completely change what's up there? Along with the standings and today's game, you could add the most recent boxscore. Maybe the upcoming minor league games and results of yesterday's games. Perhaps keep track of 3-4 prospects per affiliate and their current stat line. I think the bulk of the site is obviously about the message board threads. The blogs just aren't happening. If you could move the section with the most recent threads to have something like a link to the thread in addition to the first paragraph of that thread or something. I don't know, just brain storming on the front page ideas.
  23. hehe. Yeah, if that's the way you describe a throw that bounces twice before it ever makes it to the infield. And why does Jones do that exaggerated shoulder turn when makes his throws. Its like he thinks he is cocking his gun or something. realistically - 80% of the people on this board could throw better than Jones. He might have the worst arm of anyone I have seen in so long. I can't figure if it is arm strength or just technique - but why can he not throw it all the way in the air? I could walk out there today and do it and I don't play! I could do it 2-3 times, but then my arm would go numb and fall off.
