He wouldn't be fired, his contract is up, and in theory he wouldn't be brought back. The reason he should be let go is because George is crazy. The theory is it's WS championship or bust. If you get 95+ wins practically every year and make the playoffs, I find it hard to find fault in the manager. Yes, the payroll is ginormous, but it's highly flawed. Jeter ain't worth $22m, Clemens isn't close to being worth what he's paid. Damon and Giambi aren't earning their keep. Mussina and Pettite are overpaid. If Torre never won a WS in his 12 years, I could see the complaint, but 4 WS in 12 years is insane, let alone the average of 97.75 wins per season, and 6 AL pennants. It's very rare for any institution to maintain the same leadership for 12 years, so in theory, there's some sense in letting him go. But there's clearly no dying need.
