  1. http://cubs.mlb.com/schedule/tentative.jsp?c_id=chc&year=2008 Didn't see this before but Cubs released their own tentative schedule.
  2. Does Blanco just play for the money? Seriously, he must really love baseball. Or his hometown.
  3. perfectly suitable bench player making the minimum
  4. If Theriot were any good, I'd think his style of play would look great in the 2 hole. Unfortunately, his style doesn't translate to actual production, and the Cubs need productive hitters. My big fear about finding a way to get Soriano out of leadoff is Hendry going on another "stereotypical" leadoff hitter search and coming back with another clunker like Pierre, or Theriot. If they come up with a guy who gets on base a lot and is actually, you know, good, then I'm all for the move. But if keeping Soriano leading off means Jim might focus on a good middle of the order hitter instead of another bad leadoff hitter, that's much better.
  5. How is he an upgrade over Murton in RF? Come on, you guys no better than this. In the last three years Church has had 268, 196, 470 ABs respectively. In the year he had 470 ABs he posted his worse numbers and he doesn't walk. Besides the salary savings I really don't see the benefit of Church. I just don't get the fascination. Doesn't walk? He's got a career IsoD of 77. Yes, 2007 was his "worst numbers", but they were better than any Cubs OF other than Soriano. I wouldn't call him an improvement over Murton, but I do think he'd be an improvement over Murton alone. In other words, he could at least spell Murton from time to time in right, without coming with the cost of a guy like Jones or Floyd. He's also excellent insurance for Pie, if Felix can't come through in 2008. I think your hangup is a lot more about religion than baseball.
  6. Andy really set his boy up nice right before leaving town. Talking about not negotiating in good faith. That was like the Bears letting Hatley make their draft picks before letting him go, only the Cubs apparantly didn't know Andy was about to leave. Anyway, there's no way to "know" what Stone would do, but there's plenty of evidence to suggest he's be as bad, or worse than Hendry. From what I've heard him say, he shares all the faith in conventional wisdom that Jim has, without all that willingness to think of new things. Bruce talks about how Hendry and others have opened up to the importance of statistical analysis, and things like OBP in particular. I'd bet Stoney would go several years running this team into the ground before even considering it has something to do with his philosophies. I'm pretty sure everything he knows about baseball he learned before 1984.
  7. I did look at his stats, and no he's not much better than Jones. http://www.fangraphs.com/comparison.aspx?playerid=735&playerid2=2106&playerid3=&position=OF&page=1&type=full I'm all for getting rid of Jones but Church offers not much more except for scrappy whiteness and anti-semitism. I don't care that he is cheaper (marginally), he isn't aprreciably better. The Cubs need to get appreciably better. And they could do that with either one big splash like ARod at SS, or by multiple incremental improvements, including a guy like Church over Jones.
  8. He wouldn't be fired, his contract is up, and in theory he wouldn't be brought back. The reason he should be let go is because George is crazy. The theory is it's WS championship or bust. If you get 95+ wins practically every year and make the playoffs, I find it hard to find fault in the manager. Yes, the payroll is ginormous, but it's highly flawed. Jeter ain't worth $22m, Clemens isn't close to being worth what he's paid. Damon and Giambi aren't earning their keep. Mussina and Pettite are overpaid. If Torre never won a WS in his 12 years, I could see the complaint, but 4 WS in 12 years is insane, let alone the average of 97.75 wins per season, and 6 AL pennants. It's very rare for any institution to maintain the same leadership for 12 years, so in theory, there's some sense in letting him go. But there's clearly no dying need.
  9. There's no reason to bring this up. And no. The Cubs would have to give up a boatload of talent for a declining middle infielder who is going to turn 34 next year, and would be on the hook for 3/30, and most likely a large extension. But again, there's no point in even bringing this up. Sorry, I thought this was a forum for discussion. Didn't mean to offend your sensibilities. It was a simple question. You didn't offend anything, it's just pointless to bring up the idea of the Yankees trading Jeter. There might be 100/1 odds against the Cubs getting ARod, but at least with him, there's good reason to discuss it, he's available and the Cubs can afford him (and do need him). Jeter isn't anywhere close to available. And the only possible way he could become available is if the Cubs foolishly traded away way too much to get him.
  10. John Sterling. These are two of the worst announcers in baseball. Mike and the Mad Dog, on WFAN and YES, have a routine where they take a few clips from the broadcast and just laugh at their stupidity. They are constantly confused, especially when something happens that doesn't involve mythological Yankees greatness.
  11. what a stupid defense. If you think he's the only legit possibility for CF, fine. You're wrong, but fine, there's defense for the logic. The rest is a bunch of nonsense. He was awful this year, and has been a bad player throughout most of his career, and most of the past 4 or so years. He's exactly the type of player this team needs less of.
  12. Really? They couldn't? Alfonseca, Perez, Blanco, Rusch There's plenty of reason to think they, or more specifically Jim Hendry, would be this stupid.
  13. Overreact? If the Cubs are even thinking about bringing back Trachsel, there is no such thing as overreaction. It would be an abysmal move.
  14. No, he already thinks the trade panned out. He gloated over that one win against Houston like it was the biggest game of the year. He just thinks Trachsel is good because he's an incompetent general manager.
  15. There's no reason to bring this up. And no. The Cubs would have to give up a boatload of talent for a declining middle infielder who is going to turn 34 next year, and would be on the hook for 3/30, and most likely a large extension. But again, there's no point in even bringing this up.
  16. I knew there was something more than Jim just being nice when he was pimping Trachsel's quality starts with the Cubs. Man, this just can't be true. What an absolutely horrible start to the offseason this would be. Millions of dollars just flushed down the toilet because Jim Hendry is an absolutely worthless GM. My lord. Please, don't be true. This can't happen. Byebye step forward, hello three steps back.
  17. Cubs play in Pittsburgh's home opener, April 7, then 9th and 10th. April 18-20 against Pittsburgh at home. May 16-18 against Pittsburgh at home. May 23-25 at Pittsburgh. August 25-27 at Pittsburgh.
  18. Last night I was listening to a little talk radio, and really enjoyed all the "what the yankees need to do talk." The host was mostly concerned about the lack of an ace, a pitcher who can actually strike guys out. Pretty basic stuff that most people have know about for a few years. One guy called up and was absolutely bowing down to this guy's genius for bringing up something, "he'd never really thought about." The host also touched on how wrong it is to pick on ARod's numbers, when so many others did even less, and many from the glory years had worse numbers. So a listener had to chime in saying, "yeah, but it always seemed like those guys were coming through with the timely clutch hit." Needless to say, "seemed to" is one of my favorite phrases when people talk about baseball. Anyway, I could only take about 10 minutes of this before turning it off. But it was quite enjoyable.
  19. Theriot didn't start his Cubs career batting like .174 in the first 2 months, either. Everyone, myself included, was CRUNKED to have him on the Cubs before last season, despite how "much" we gave up to get him. I saw several Pierre jersey Ts in the first few weeks of last season. After they were 20 games out...not so much. I don't know exactly what crunked is supposed to mean, but in this context I'm guessing it's "excited" or something. I, and many others, were never fooled into thinking Pierre was a good addition to the team. What they gave up just made it all that much worse. One thing, other than race, to differentiate how people viewed Pierre and Theriot is cost. When a guy like Theriot makes the minimum to basically do what Pierre did for millions, there's going to be a difference of perception. Additionally, there's the acquisition cost, in terms of players given up in trade.
  20. I agree, if it means we are going to be a perinnial threat for the WS...I'd suffer Ads on the front and back of the jersies, the name of the latest internet casion mowed into the OF grass, an inflatable Gecko flying above the stadium, and Viagra signs wallpapering the outfield walls instead of ivy. I love Wrigley with a passion, but I love the Cubs even more. It's about time we win and win often. However, such ads would not mean the Cubs would win, and there's no need for such ads in order for them to win.
  21. Are you referring to hard tickets, not print at home? Why would you have to mail in NLCS Game 2 tickets and not Game 1? NLDS, not NLCS.
  22. Fenway has always been a bastard stepchild to Wrigley as far as the "pristine" older stadium is concerned. They've had ads everywhere, forever. Throwing a jumbotron in there was relatively meaningless. And easy to do. The iconic image of Wrigley has always been the bleachers, from left to right, with the scoreboard front and center. A jumbotron simply would not fit anywhere. Now, throw some notsojumbotrons around the grandstand area is probably a possibility.
  23. If signing Wood allows you to trade Dempster though, you save money and add talent from the trade. That's one of the only 2 ways I'd sign Wood. The other way would be if Wood came for less than 2 million, which I don't see as likely but I guess it's possible. It's much more important not to get tied up in multi-year deals than to avoid paying significant money to relievers. I don't mind a quality reliever getting $2-5m. I hate being tied to a guy for 3 years.
  24. He will sign to be a reliever somewhere next year. I doubt somebody signs him to be a closer right away, but the Yankees would surely be interested in a potentially dominant set-up man.
  25. He's also a very intelligent person. He'd know what sells Wrigley, and lasers and big screens aren't it. Yeah, it's one thing to try and sell the ugly whore that is NBA basketball, it's quite another to try and sell Cubs baseball at Wrigley Field.
