Kendall at the 2, Floyd at 5, DeRosa at 6, Jones at 7, imo. Not a fan of Floyd batting cleanup. You do realize that Kendall's little hot streak is long gone, don't you? He's hitting .232/.328/.286 over the last 28 days, .204/.304/.265 in September. He's a terrible option in the 2 hole.

If this is true, do you think Jacque Jones constitutes a veteran leader? B/c I'd love to have Matt Kemp, the 23-year-old with the .873 OPS. Ah yes, veteran-ny goodness. That's fantastic news. It's always good when other NL teams make stupid decisions.

The thing with Kendall and Trachsel is that the whole playoff chase thing is about as new to them as it is to any kid.

New sod is usually a bit of a problem. But there are 10 days before any potential game on that field, it should be in good shape by then. Football teams sometimes resod midweek, and there's a lot more starting and stopping in that sport. Odds are you'll see some clumps come up here and there, and it will be noticeable for the TV cameras, but given the time frame, a quality grounds crew should be able to make it playable and relatively safe.

Yeah, how dare they show a famous victory highlight in their own stadium. When they know its rubbing it in the face of the visiting and majority of fans? Pretty dumb and petty thing to do. Still their victory, still their stadium. Honestly, in the big picture, any Cubs fans' complaining is just sour grapes. I think that's nonsense. This isn't just a Florida thing, lots of teams do this confrontational BS, and it's disgusting. They do it in Philly and NY, and even the Rockies pulled this crap. It basically eggs on bad behavior by the fans. Their house their rules is absurd. There's no justification for that ignorant behavior and obvious attempt to stir up emotions that will lead to problems.

To be fair, once you watch like 55% of your games (all the WGN and CSN home games, plus the occasional national game) in HD, the other half or so look pretty freakin crappy. Yeah, I'll live. But once you get used to HD, other stuff looks pretty crappy. Like VHS compared to DVD. I guess since I don't have an HD TV I really can't get into the whole HD craze. Yeah, it definitely looks better, not not so much that I feel like I'm really missing anything not watching it in HD. With DVD's, I'm buying movies and TV shows that typically are shot to be of a certain expected level of "filmed" quality, so there I definitely appreciate any advances in picutre clarity much moreso than when I watch sports. As long as I can see what's going on, I'm good. HD really isn't ging to highlight something I'm going to miss otherwise. Neither will color, really -- you'll still see the game as it happened for the most part. But I bet you wouldn't want to watch the Cubs in B&W But I don't want to hijack the thread :wink: I JUST WANT THE CUBS ON HD IN THE PLAYOFFS! 8-) Yeah, it took me a long time to get my HD service straightened out, and it really does make a huge difference. All the faults of regular broadcasts just stand out now. It's comparable to the difference between getting a solid regular cable system and a less than perfect over the air signal in my opinion.

I agree, but I don't foresee that much of a stir will be caused about it. Hell, most of the people on here didn't even know what I meant by an OTA simulcast. I think I read a couple of years ago (I'm sure it's less now) that only like 10% of American homes didn't have pay TV, and a good sized chunk of that were people that didn't watch television at all. Yeah, I'd have to imagine there's an incredibly small number of people who want to watch baseball playoff games who don't have access to TBS. I don't think it's ridiculous myself.

Give me an example of when a player is somehow more valuable than what he produces. For the sake of discussion...not being argumentative. This is purely hypothetical, but suppose Soriano, Ramirez, and Lee have seasons typical of their career norms with a supporting cast eerily similar to the previous season in which there was a 15 game improvement in wins. The biggest statistical difference happens to be the addition of DeRosa, who puts up an ERA+ around 105 while his career number is closer to 90 and also provides a defensive upgrade at his position. An argument for DeRosa as MVP under this scenario isn't ludicrous. I think it is ludicrous. Simply outperforming career norms doesn't qualify as a most valuable season.

I would think Rich Hill beats out Marmol for cost effective value to this team. DeRosa has certainly lived up to his contract, but his numbers are essentially the same as Murton's. His salary is 6.6 times that of Murton. On a strict cost effectiveness basis, his playing time and defensive position would have to offset that difference. I'm not sure it does. Lee is the most expensive player on the team this year, but I think his production has offset most of that. I guess Blanco and Jones are probably the least cost effective player on the team, depending on how you calculate Barrett into the equation.

Depending on how you define value, the most valuable player could be the most cost effectively productive player. Although I would tend to agree with your general theme. I'll take most productive over most grittiest.

I have to side with Hendry on this one. I'm sick of that stupid $300 million spending spree line. THE CHICAGO CUBS DIDN'T SPEND $300 MILLION THIS PAST OFFSEASON. Although I do agree that it's not really a farm system outperforming expectations.

I don't know-the Cubs are on a roll since they started looking at the scoreboard more extensively. I say let them keep doing it! I mean, DeRosa in the Reds comeback game specifically mentioned the scoreboard as a big reason why the comeback happened just to cite one example. I don't quite believe him on that, but it appears from this Cubs team that it doesn't hurt them to do it. Yeah, I'm not too worried about the Cubs watching the scoreboard.

It's not the same thing with managers. Judging 95 wins as a good season is in no way shape or form similar to judging a manager as good by not making a stupid decision.

Listening to Stoney on the Score this morning, he seemed to be implying the same thing, saying he'd like to be on the same workout regimen Soto was on in the offseason. It's hard not to raise your eyebrows a bit when a player equals his career totals in homeruns in one year Is there a minor league expert out there that may know if Soto changed his stroke this year, ala Sandberg, or if his power surge is attributed to weight loss, etc. I love Soto and his current production, but it is difficult not to be skeptical on the means he might have pursued in order to do so. I don't think it's difficult to not be skeptical. He's hitting the age when power develops. He got himself into shape last offseason as well.

1. Ramirez, most potent bat on the team over the past 4+ years. 2. Hill, dirt cheap effective pitchers may be the most valuable commodity in the game. 3. Zambrano, drives me nuts, but I like him. 4. DeRosa, Hendry's constant search for versatile players finally turns up one who is actually worth having play all those positions. 5. Wood, for old times sake, and for the slight hope he'll still put in a couple great years in a Cubs uniform. Honorable Mention: Lee, I respect him quite a bit, but other than that insane 2005, I've never been enamored with his game. Lilly, everything I could have hoped for as a pitcher, even if I'd never get excited if he was the pitcher at a game I was attending. Floyd, I've always liked him, it's just too bad he's not that good anymore. Murton/Theriot/Soto/Marmol/Marshall, for being the cheap young players who make it possible to win a bit despite the bloated inefficient payroll.

Jacque didn't disappear from the lineup in the first half. He had about a 8 game streak where he sat. I find it interesting that you refer to his 800 OPS in the second half and then say nobody could contribute that this year in CF. Jacque's line is .274/.328/.385 for the season, that's the line that matters. Plus, his post ASB OPS is below 800 now.

I think it really explains a lot about why Cubs fans still hold him in such high regard. Anything that the've done good in the past decade has involved Wood. You could say that about a lot of guys. Others have responded, but I'll just repeat, no, you can't say that about a lot of other guys. Sammy was, but he hasn't been a Cub in a longtime and the breakup was so ugly it affected everything about how fans feel about him. Wood is still here, and the Cubs are in 1st. If they make the playoffs, that would be 3 Chicago Cubs playoff teams in 10 years and one guy who has been a part of all of them. And he was a huge part of the first 2.

On June 2nd the Cubs were 22-31. Following the loss against the Mets when Soriano went down, they were 58-52. On the day before he came back, they were 66-63. Now they are 83-73. So, they've been 53-31 since June 2nd when Soriano hasn't been on DL.

Good. Hopefully the Cubs get KC instead. I'm always irritated that the Cards get 2 series against KC each year. But the Cubs are lucky to face a worse White Sox team.
