  1. The only part of 2006 I care to think about is Dusty Baker finally left. Oh, and Rich Hill was finally given some sort of shot late in the season.
  2. Actually, yes. I was part of ESPN's "Five Reasons You Can't Blame Bartman" special. I hated to see this kid get tarred and feathered. Alex Gonzalez ought to send Bartman Christmas cards every year. The thing I hate about the networks is their fascination with Bartman and the goat. It has really started up the past few days. It reminds me why I used to pity Red Sox fans with the non-stop curse talk.
  3. Here's the thing: Sometimes you've got to go out on a limb. In '05, having watched the Cubs-Astros finish the regular season, I thought the 'Stros bullpen was pretty vulnerable. So I toyed with picking the White Sox in four in the Serious. But I chickened out and played it safe with picking the Sox in 5. So, what the heck, let's go with a Cubs sweep. BTW, I've got a great right-hand man helping me in Tim Sassone. He's our Blackhawks writer and a nominee for the writers' wing of the hockey Hall of Fame. Check out his stuff on our page. Tim does a great, great job. If he has the Hawks winning the Central I'll know you two have either spent too much time in the sun or the bars. Wait a minute, does this mean nobody is minding the ship up there in Minnesota for Thursday's game?
  4. thanks bruce. 3 huh?
  5. OPS normalized for park factors and the league. 100 is average.
  6. I wouldn't say he's miles beyond Walker, but he's certainly been better than almost every other versatile player Hendry has gone after.
  7. Wouldn't a goat be somebody who caused the team to lose a big game or something? I was critical of the DeRosa signing because 2006 was the first year he did much of anything over any prolonged duration. He absolutely sucked in the one year he got his most playing time. But I warmed to him pretty much as soon as he started playing. He's been a very nice addition as the starting second baseman. If he can maintain a 100 OPS+ at second base he'll have been more than worth the money.
  8. Why? They aren't that good.
  9. They're the sexy choice. And I don't understand why. The Cubs got their butts handed to them by every NL contender not named Milwaukee. I think they can win the series, but I don't see how they can be considered the favorite. Sure, the rest of the country seems to want to see the Cubs win, because of the story, but I don't see how that makes them the favorite.
  10. I really don't understand how so many people are putting the Cubs as favorites.
  11. Couldn't? Or wouldn't? I'll switch on my blackberry when I land in London and call up the scoreboard. If it happens, I'll probably kiss the wife and then go on a very long pub crawl. Well, I look pretty young as it is. Even at 24, I get carded for some 18 y.o. stuff. Would've been hard to get away with it prior to being legit, especially as a guy. I had a relatively easy time of it by the time I was 18/19. The funny thing is, going to school in NY, I was never carded once in the city until about a week after my 21st birthday.

  13. I wouldn't say worried, just resigned to the fact that he's going to look a lot more like the pre-2005 DLee than the 2005 DLee. That is, he has some pretty good power, but nothing all that special. Hopefully he can maintain a 900 OPS for the next few years.
  14. Lou loved his work in last year's postseason though. It all depends on whether Lou thinks he's seen enough. He keeps putting him out there which tells you Lou thinks Monroe is ready to help. In my view, he's still the best option in CF against a LHP. That says far more about the lack of any other credible option than it does about him, of course. I don't care how bad he's been in his limited sample with the Cubs; Jacque Jones should never, ever start against a LHP. Ever. (And for those of you ready to interject Pie into the conversation: v. LHP in the majors - .111/.158/.111 v. LHP at Iowa - .190/.250/.286 He's not a credible option either) It's probably too late to consider DeRosa as the CF v. LHP, but I wouldn't mind that. Cedeno and Theriot could play 2B and SS. Jones has changed his approach against LH'ers this year, it appears to be working too. He's more willing to hit the outside sliders from Lh'ers to LF and not be so pull happy. His numbers have been good vs. them this year and Monroe has been bad all year and worse since coming to the Cubs. I wouldn't go as far as saying the numbers are good, but they are better. I doubt Monroe is going to be any better.
  15. Is there any talk of Randolph losing his job? Oh yeah. Complaint number 1 is he doesn't inspire enough FIRE AND INTESITY!
  16. I'm really hoping for the Cubs, Mets, Phillies and Padres, just because it gives me the greatest chance of attending games. It would mean SD took care of MIL as well. But I still think the most likely scenario is the Cubs will be in Arizona next week.
  17. I'd give up the farm for him and place him in RF (although I'd rather put Soriano in RF and let Miggy go back to left).
  18. I'm a bit surprised at the reactions of many Mets fans. I haven't heard the talk radio, so I'm sure they are freaking out there, but the guys I know are kind of just taking this in stride, accepting their fate without freaking out. It's like a dumbfounded disbelief coupled with a sense that it's all so familiar.

  20. Marshall more than held his own as the 5th starter. I actually don't mind Marquis in the playoffs. He's obviously capable of giving you a very good performance. He's capable of blowing up as well. But imagine the boost the team would get if they actually got one of his good starts. It's easy to see when Marquis doesn't have it, and in those games, Lou has to pull him quickly and go with Marshall/Hart. Wood is needed in the pen, where his 4-5 innings during a series would probably be of more value than 4-5 innings in one start.
  21. That's absurd. Trachsel was awful and anybody could see it. It was a predictable disaster.
  22. Lapointe is talking up Toews's leadership skills and worthiness as a captain. I'm really getting excited about the potential of these young guys, even if the most likely outcome is that they'll all stink and/or be bothered with injuries that limit their ability.
  23. Sorry, but it's absurd to tell fans to calm down when their team is playing like crap at the end of the race. You are way off on your claim about the fear. MIL doesn't have to win every game and the Cubs don't have to lose every game. If they lose today, and MIL wins, all they need to do is play one game worse over the weekend, and they will have to play a play-in game, which the Cubs won't have anybody good to start, and they will screw up their chances in the playoffs anyway if they give the ball to Zambrano. The only reason not to worry is if you think it's next to impossible for the Cubs to lose this game and 2 of 3 to Cincy, and for MIL to take 3 of 4 against SD at home.
  24. Yes, the offense is the biggest problem, but anytime you give up as many runs as innings pitched, you aren't giving the team a chance. The offense has been the biggest problem for several years now.
