  1. Edmonds is not Nomar or Fukudome. He's not going to be a celebrated new player. Cubs fans at Wrigley hated Jim Edmonds. This isn't a NSBB thing. He will have, at best, a mixed reception. My guess is it won't be emphatic one way or the other.
  2. Is that supposed to be commendable? He went with a very good pitcher over a terrible pitcher. Kind of a no-brainer. Then this year Lou kept letting Marquis pitch on a regular rotation while bumping Hill then demoting him. I never said Lou refuses to take youth over veterans. But the younger player has to significantly outperform that vet for it to happen. Lou may not be as bad or dumb as some managers on this topic, it doesn't mean it's not completely asinine to think about giving Jim Edmonds playing time over Felix Pie.
  3. Clearly that's the rationale, and that's the problem. The Cubs think you can't win with a guy like Felix around (dumb) and that having a guy like Edmonds improves your chances of winning (dumb). Furthermore, Lou has shown he will cut bait with some veterans, but there's no telling how much mediocrity he's willing to accept before he decides a player isn't performing. 3 months of a 700 OPS from Edmonds would be detrimental to the team. But as long as he's the only LH 5th hitter with a little pop on the team, he will get the benefit of the doubt. Lou has also shown that first impressions are most important. All it will take is one good game or one big hit out of Edmonds early in his stint and that will prolong his stay by months. Considering he'll be hitting in the middle of a potent lineup, he's going to have multiple chances to come through. One well-timed hit is all it will take to convince some people it was the right move.
  4. Theriot stunk last year but kept his job with no threat of losing it to a younger more talented player. Reed Johnson has been allowed to fail repeatedly against RHP without a legit threat of Pie getting more time. Jason Marquis has been allowed to fail repeatedly, same with Howry and Eyre. And Jason Kendall was abysmal for months until the odd practice of September callups actually forced them to even think about replacing him. The fact that they are even considering Edmonds is more evidence that bad veterans are given priority over kids who need to produce. I cannot think of a better time to live through the struggles of a young kid than when you are scoring lots of runs and winning games, getting production from everybody else. Add in the fact that the kid plays better defense than any other option and will produce similar numbers against RHP than any reasonable replacement and you have a perfect situation for living with the struggles.
  5. You act as if this team can't win with Felix. That's nonsense. Thats not it at all. I just think that Cubs have put winning a World Series in front of developing Felix. I don't know if this is the right move or not. I not sure if I like the idea of signing Edmonds. Felix needs ABs and Lou is not going to play him then only way he will get ABs is in the minors. Winning a World Series should always be in front of developing Felix. But signing Jim Edmonds has nothing to do with winning the World Series or developing Felix.
  6. Doesn't matter. He's not even close to the best kicker in the NFL now and never should have been close to the highest paid. Whether that lasts a week or a season is inconsequential. It's irresponsible cap management and bad business. For a team that talks about prioritizing contracts and paying their own, it's absurd that they reward a mediocre kicker who skipped voluntary workouts with an inflated contract while they have meaningful players in need of deals.
  7. You act as if this team can't win with Felix. That's nonsense. The Cubs offense has been perfectly fine while getting nothing from CF against RHP. Clearly they can succeed with Pie in CF against RHP. Edmonds doesn't even offer an upgrade in that regard. Early in a season when you are scoring lots of runs and winning lots of games is the absolute easiest time to try and let a kid develop on a contender. This isn't low risk. The risk is that Edmonds hits in the 5th spot, keeps sucking, but keeps playing because the Cubs are absolute failures at realizing when a veteran is done. Jason Kendall kept blowing chunks for months while Soto was destroying the ball, yet the Cubs did nothing. This move could easily cost a game, not to mention delays Pie's development and reduce his trade value. There's no rational support for this move, only nonsensical "proven veteran" conventional wisdom BS.
  8. I will never forget that game, and I will never fully hate Estes because of that game. IIRC, he even had 2 hits that game. Of course if he didn't suck the rest of the year, that game wouldn't have been necessary. Bingo. No need to sugar coat because of one well-timed quality start. He sucked.
  9. Indeed. He'd be a terrible pick up at this point in his career. I hope this is more speculation than sourced material. Where's Bruce Miles? I fear it's much more likely that Edmonds will be our Jason Kendall v2.0 as opposed to mere speculation. Hopefully there are similar results in a prospect pushing him out of the picture later in the year. Bruce's article and blog posting on the subject suggest they are very serious about Edmonds and there's a really good chance he'll at least be given a shot. Knowing the Cubs people, Edmonds won't have to show much to prove worthy (to them) of a callup to the majors, and he won't have to do much in the majors to keep his job. They are more than willing to accept mediocrity or worse from horrible veterans with nothing in the thank than they are willing to accept struggles from kids with significant upside just learning the game.
  10. it's his numbers last year that concern me, not so much his numbers this year. Edmonds used to be good. But his body is beat to hell and the concusion apparantly finished him off. His numbers were in a steady decline long before this year and as rocket pointed out, he was awful in 2007. He's almost certainly done.
  11. He was only among the most accurate in 2006, and the only reason his percentage is high is because he never even attempts long ones. He's a high percentage kicker on chip shots and extra points. That's dime a dozen stuff right there.
  12. That's the point though, when you never attempt field goals past 48 yards, it's kind of easy to keep your % up. That being said, he's been in the league 3 years and has only had a good % in one of those 3. In 2005 and 2007 he was completely unimpressive. I don't have a problem with the strategy of not attempting really long field goals. I do have a problem paying a guy who can't kick them the most money of any kicker in the league.
  13. Where are these posts at? Seriously, what happened? Was it at all related to Ryno getting suspended? oh she just posted a couple of anti-ryno rants, similar to the "IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!" rant from last year. i guess the mods deemed these posts pointless and threw them in the atomic dust bin of cyberspace. She needs new material.
  14. jody davis's wife pam is pretty hot. looks a little like the girl from hunter. also, the fans in SD are waving at the camera like maniacal douches every chance they get. And then there's Goose Gossage's wife.
  15. Now that I actually read the story I see "highest paid kicker". That's ridiculous. Robbie is not the best kicker in the league.
  16. Agreed. Sign him to a minor league contract, and give him 2 weeks to show he still has game left in that body. If he doesn't, simply released him. His poor start with San Diego, maybe coincides with him declining, or the fact that San Diego sucks. Give me a 1-2 weeks minor league assignment, and see if he has anything left. If he doesn't, no harm, no foul. So he might be sucking because the Padres aren't good or the City of San Diego blows? Edmonds' decline began long before going to San Diego. His 05 was a notch below his best years, 2006 was unimpressive and 2007 was horrible.
  17. Game 4 1984 NLCS on ESPN Classic right now. 3-3 bottom 6. Carmelon Martinez is up.
  18. I wouldn't have minded seeing him walk. Robbie doesn't kick off worth a crap, and while he's got a nice FG%, he either can't kick long ones or the coaching staff doesn't let him kick long ones. They never seem to take a chance on 48+ yard kicks. He wasn't any good in 2005, he had a very nice percentage in 2006 and was just above average in 2007. Nothing special. Hopefully it's extremely team friendly.

  20. Awareness for organizations that raise funds for breast cancer treatments and research? And which one was mentioned in the article? You're looking it at too simplistically. Awareness isn't just about knowing something exists. It's also about having it top of mind. When these guys use the pink bats, etc., it generates discussion by the announcers, the folks doing the highlights, etc. That discussion makes the issue top of mind for the viewer. That, in turn, can lead to the viewer donating money/time (finding a BC charity isn't hard). It can also remind the viewer to get a mammogram and take other preventative measures. Or, if it is a male watching, it can prompt him to discuss that stuff with his wife/gf/daughter/sister/whoever. In relation to all the other diseases, doesn't breast cancern research receive the most awareness and fund raising in relation to how widespread the disease? While it's certainly a noble cause, it's kind of the easy way out - just wearing pink clothes.
  21. It's unfair to blame Dusty on this. The players are the ones who grab the bat and walk up to the plate, Dusty can't do that for them.
  22. Kind of reinforces the notion that it was fairly ridiculous to ever think Samardzija could have been fast tracked to the majors. If he ever amounts to anything, it's going to be a long time from now. But some were talking about a potential call-up in 2007, and many were talking about him pitching in the majors in 2008. He shouldn't even be on the radar for 2009. The guy has about 210 pro innings, and I think he's going to need at least 400-500 innings before you can think about bringing him up.
  23. I haven't swung at a fastpitch baseball in years. If I had some practice I might be able to foul one off before striking out miserably. But even that's in doubt.
  24. Why would it matter? A blown lead is a blown lead. But Tomy, aren't we trying to avoid from a blown save occurring? ...oh, and a yeah ---Go Hawks! You can blow a save before the 9th inning.
  25. I don't understand why everyone is so down on Benson. Its not like he was put into a very good situation to succeed last year. What good is cutting him when he is at worst going to be your second best RB. The good is salary savings. He's getting paid an awful lot to be a backup, and if Forte is better, that's where you're going to end up. If salary is not an issue, then yeah...there's no problem hanging on to him. I don't think the salary savings are significant. The team isn't in cap trouble. But they'd still take somewhat of a cap hit by cutting Benson. I don't get how anybody could question why people are down on Benson. He was a 4th overall pick who hasn't come close to living up to the selection or the salary. He's been a tremendous disappointment. That being said, I'm all for keeping him around at least through training camp, unless he shows the team nothing before then.
