  1. Simon swung at everything, Ward doesn't swing at hardly anything. Polar opposites. Well yeah but they are both big, black lefthanders so.. Randall is from the Caribbean so he can't be black.
  2. Well to be fair a ton of rookies have gotten a chance and stuck. Soto, Marmol, Theriot, Font, etc... Which shows the only way to stick is to produce immediately. There's no room for adjustments to the major league game. Get a big hit or record a bit out in your first game, and you are golden. Lou is all about first impressions and taking forever to change those impressions.
  3. Relax, he drafted Alex Rios, or somebody.
  4. I was thinking this primarily when he struck out on a low and away pitch early in the game. He was down 0-2, and I sat there thinking that the next pitch was going to be way low and away. That's exactly what happened, and he swung, missing badly. He did take a couple yesterday, but his second at bat against Wellemeyer seems to be more the norm every time I watch him. He's swinging at way too many bad pitches, even when they're predictable. But that's always been the case with Soriano. He's like Sosa before he decided to take a few pitches. Simon was actually difficult to strike out because he made contact with those bad pitches. Soriano does not.
  5. Film him having sex?
  6. I've seen a variation of the following statements all offseason: The Bears can't win with Rex (or Orton) at QB. Rex has proven he can't compete in the NFL. It's obvious the Bears could never have success in the postseason with a QB like Rex at the helm. While it's perfectly sane and rational to have doubts about the Bears, Rex and Orton, and it is not out of the realm of possibility to imagine the Bears struggling to win 7 games next year, why do people have to ignore the simple facts in this case? The Chicago Bears have won 21 NFL regular season games with Grossman at QB, losing 11. They have won multiple playoff games including an NFC championship game with Rex at Qb. They have won 12 games, and lost 6, with Kyle Orton at QB. When discussing the Bears QB situation it is fairly obvious that they have struggled. There are major questions and no sure things at the position. But the suggestion that it is not possible for the Chicago Bears to enjoy any success with these 2 QBs in charge is simply contrary to any and all facts available. They have enjoyed success under these guys, and therefore, it very clearly is possible for them to enjoy future success. Whether they won because of, or in spite of these two players is meaningless. This is not meant as an endorsement of either player. I would love to get a real improvement over both Kyle and Rex. But it is absolutely ridiculous to go on pretending it's impossible for the Bears to win NFL games, regular season or postseason, with these guys playing. It's happened before and can happen again.
  7. One month into the season and Tyler Colvin is hitting .216/.272/.353 with a 29/7 K/BB. He's played 92 games in AA and has 16 doubles, 3 triples and 12 HR. The walk rate has increased this season from non-existent to occasionally, but he's still striking out frequently. Not a great start to the professional career of the former first round pick. He's a couple years older than Pie was at this level, and less likely as Felix to be able to remain in center. Given how quickly Lou and the organization appears to have soured on Pie, I have to wonder what kind of rope Colvin will end up getting.
  8. It's scary how quickly Lou can decide who he trusts to play and who he doesn't trust, and then how steadfastly he will stick to that initial assessment.
  9. Actually Mateo has already been removed from the 40 man. Correct, but that was to create space for Fox on the 40-man. That doesn't necessarily mean Mateo will retire (though I'm guessing he already retired), he could stick it out and report to Daytona. I agree that Ascanio would have been the much better choice as would a second lefty in Cotts. Fox was horrid his last time out and Ascanio and Cotts have been fantastic all season. And of course, Ascanio and Cotts were already on the 40-man. According to the Cubs there was space with or without Mateo.
  10. I was thinking maybe he's on some sort of hot streak and the team is trying to catch lightning in a bottle. 4 2/3 innings, 6/1 k/bb, 4 ER. Sounds like one of those weak "the manager trusts the guy" moves. Did they have an early May callup or release contract?
  11. While there may be better options, some of them should be in a rotation, not the bullpen. The Cubs website list 39 names on the 40-man, including Fox and Guzman, who is on the 60-day DL.
  12. What I don't get is why the Bears are not considered "contenders" and yet Minnesota is? Both should have outstanding Defenses (if anybody remembers, the Bears have the CORE OF THEIR DEFENSE back again. Even tho they struggled under Babich the 1st yr, I expect major improvement in yr 2.). Both have questionable offense. Minnesota has basically a RB, and nothing else. Berrian won't be effective, as long as Jackson can't complete a pass over 10 yrds. Even tho he isn't great, but I take my chances on Grossman and his recievers over Jackson and his recievers. There is not one team in the NFC North, I fear. In fact, my bold predeiction will be...the Bears winning the division by two games. This is not true. The biggest difference between the 2 teams is that Minnesota has a good, solid, proven O-line, something that remains a big question mark for the Bears. They will be able to run the ball and just hope Jackson can be "good enough" to get them some wins. That's true, but you counter that with APete being the ONLY offensive option, and it becomes a wash, about their line. I have a feeling that Minny will play ALL THREE QBs next yr. A better line and APete is their only weapon, whereas the Bears have a mediocre line and no weapon.
  13. Well written. As a note, despite the hot start and cult hero status, Reed has a sub 700 OPS. .286/.367/.321 doesn't look all that bad thanks to the decent OBP, but that's not going to last. In addition, he's hitting .283/.322/.321 against RHP. Hopefully Lou stops being fooled by the brief hot streak and realizes who Reed Johnson is, a good option to hit against LHP, but nothing more.
  14. God forbid people get pissed off over a heartbreaking win. Is that like when you win the game but lose several key players to injury? Trying to figure out what you're referring to...did the Brewers lose anyone? Oops. Meant heartbreaking loss. Wow I'm an idiot and/or too tired. I totally missed that. Coincidentally, MIL also lost somebody very important.
  15. I don't see it. I see a lot of ripping Yost, deservedly so, and a lot of "this helps the cubs", which is true. There was one, not some.
  16. Sure...because it's there every year! If it's only in your area for one year, it's a unique experience worth checking out. No, because it's boring as hell and only weirdos go.
  17. Quotes by the Rockies GM suggest he's accepted their fate as also rans this year. It lead me to believe he's not going to panice to replace Tulo, but build for the future.
  18. I'm sure you're not alone, but that's pathetic.
  19. I doubt it. There's two things that bring people to the draft. One, passion for the game, which is limited at best LA. Two, nothing else to do. It's mid-to-late April in NY and weather is hit or miss. Nobody is spending a day at the beach or doing much outdoors. To them, 8 hours inside makes some sense. Plus, it's the same people every year. People are not dying to go to the draft. Whenever I hear people bring it up, they say, "it would be cool to go." Then they think about it for 2 minutes and realize, "No, that would actually suck."
  20. No....no way. It's NYC's thing and that's the way it should stay. Why? What gives NYC exclusive rights? I think it'd be great to see some fans outside of the Giants and Jets hooting and hollering in the balcony. Giants, Jets, Cowboys, Redskins and Eagles show up en masse. LA sucks and should not be in the discussion. NY is close to multiple NFL teams, and the home to large chunks of several fan bases. They supported the draft long before it became popular. That being said, it could be fun to see it in Chicago, where you'd get a fair amount of Bears, Packers, Vikings and possibly even Rams fans. DC, Philly, Boston could be decent locales as well. It might be fun to do it beachside in Florida, where you'd get a spring break type atmosphere thrown in. But LA should not be in the mix.
  21. You were doing so well until that nonsensical last sentence.
  22. I'm not sure why anybody would think Cuban would stand in the way of a prospects for relievers trade. He seems to me the type of owner that would insist on filling that "need".
  23. God forbid people get pissed off over a heartbreaking win. Is that like when you win the game but lose several key players to injury?
  24. I'd wonder how much this tally would fluctuate given the point in season.
  25. I decided about a year ago to no longer read any of his columns that had anything to do with anything OTHER then Mark Cuban. my hope is his readership will drop soooo low that the Trib will only print his Cuban stuff one can dream. You talking about Mariotti or somebody else now? he is pretty pro-Cuban, I like that...cigars and owners, ya know? He writes for the Sun-Times.
