    There's like 70 OPS points seperating them, and it's a day game after a night game. The only reason that there is "70" points separating them is that Soto is struggling at the plate. He needs AB's. The only real justification is the day/night games but he has missed a ton of playing time this year. He should be in there. But it is a day game after a night game, and Geo has sucked. He's going to get plenty of playing time the rest of the way. But he will most likely sit all day games after a night game unless he's ridiculously hot and the team somehow gets back into it. That is not currently the case, so there is absolutely nothing wrong with sitting him on the day after a night game before a trip to Philadelphia when it is going to be about a billion degrees.

    More often than not Ryan has been really good, certainly worth his salary. The hate for him, especially given all the more deserving targets, has been bizarre. Granted, it's only been from a couple of people. It's got to be a carryover effect from his time as closer during the previous dark period of Hendry era. He kind of sucked in the bullpen and has been a solid starter (before this year).

    Annoying sequence there. People may view it as failure to bring in a guy from third, I view it as failure of only trying to bring in a guy from third. Barney seemed to want to pop it up to the right side, and DeWitt was just trying to hit it on the ground to the right side. They both did what they were looking to do, but it still didn't count. I prefer guys just try and hit in that situation instead of limiting their preferable outcomes.

    What the heck did this mean? You wanted to go even deeper into the well for a starter to replace Dempster? They don't have any arms in the system to put in there.

    When you consider what kind of money international free agents can get, I think it may actually be depressed a bit. A $4m investment can turn into an extremely cheap 4+ years of service time. Throwing $10m at a group should get you some payoff.

    What's the best case scenario if he accepts arbitration? They can only offer as little as 80% of his 2011 salary? Can they cut him and only pay portion of reward? With no other apparent 3B options, is there any chance it's worth it? Best case scenario is that he plays like mid-2000's Aramis. I mean realistic best case scenario. And more on the financial outcome. I guess there's always hope for one last hurrah with him. He was good enough for long enough to make it possible. And there's always the problem of no other options.

    I know I"m ignorant in these sorts of matters, but if a player is deemed an "impossible" sign, why waste a draft pick on him, even if it's one in the 11th round? An 11th rounder isn't going to net you much if you go safe. If you can take a chance on a seemingly impossible sign who might actually sign, it can easily be worth the risk.

    Well ever since the focus has turned toward the future beyond 2011, Soto and Castro seem to make everyone's list of "players to build around" or "good young players" or what have you. That's the slack I'm referring to. He's a 4th year player who finished in the top 3-5 players at his postion offensively two out of his first three years in the majors. He deserves some slack I don't see how it's giving slack to consider Geo one of the few pieces that can help in the future. He's still under team control, still 28 and still quite a good catcher over the course of his career. He's been bad this year, and he's missed time. Doesn't mean he holds no value going forward. Castro has also kind of sucked for a month, doesn't mean his future value takes a hit. Granted, he's got a lot more upside with more age on his side, and therefore more value going forward. But Geo isn't getting slack just because people still have hope for him.

    It wouldn't surprise me if he retired after this year. He already hinted that he didn't intend to play for a lot longer. I am a bit surprised to think that he would want out so badly that he's willing to give up the 16 million dollar option though. It's not his option, yet.

    It would be impossible for him to be as high a draft pick or get nearly as much of a guaranteed contract, so there's pretty much no way he could be a bigger bust than Leaf. Probably more like Maurice Clarett.

    I don't see the point in talking about what they can and cannot do. Sure, the Ricketts could always just throw a few more million into the Cubs to allow for another signing. The point is there is a budget for the Chicago Cubs irrespective of the wealth of the family, which is based on the revenue of the Chicago Cubs. That budget is divided in many ways, but the meaningful one is the distinction between major league ballclub and prospect acquisition. Assume the budget is fixed. They didn't expect to suck this bad and be out of the race this early. Revenue is probably going to be lower. If they are going to spend $150m this year (made up number between payroll and signings), why not cut a little bit of that out of the major league budget and give a little boost to that prospect acquisition in what is already an exremely disappointing year?
