    Well then you just aren't remembering accurately. He did a lot of things wrong, like hiring Lynch and Hendry and allowing Baker to come here. But he did spend and allow spending, he just got weird about it at times.

    I'm not sure they are reportedly after him, as much as Phil Rogers' boring good old boy stupidity just brought up his name out of the blue.

    Part of it is garbage-like. But overall it's not that bad. Citi Field is brand spanking new and a complete pile of junk.

    Every report indicates he actually made strong offers to their best players. I really see no reason to assume he wouldn't sign stars to star contracts. MacPhail didn't even avoid that. It's a pointless worry.

    It's played out only because there's only so long you can win 90 games on a shoestring budget. I'd be very happy to let a guy with a history of exploiting baseball people's idiocy try and do it again with twice the payroll. I'd be afraid that the same things that happened with MacPhail would happen with Beane. It's not easy to change your philosophy when you are transitioning from a small market with certain expectations to a big market with different expectations. I'm not sure Beane would be that much better with a bigger payroll. MacPhail was completely different though. He was completely beholden to the way a good baseball man would do it and apparently trying out for role as commisioner the entire time. I don't see Beane holding down payroll just to keep the establishment happy.

    I don't get how he can say they didn't realize what it needed. We've been hearing about the need for years and they have specifically talked about the willingness to make those investments for years. Peter knows what he knows but when he tries to get into specifics of non-Boston teams he doesn't know much at all.

    It was obviously not true at the time, and I have no idea why he said it. He's a Phillies fan so a lot of it was just hero worship and being a sycophant toward a guy he thought he could buddy up to. I guess once a cokehead always a cokehead and stupid things will fly out of your mouth.

    So I stayed up late to finish last night's game and the girl decided to wake up really extra early for no good reason this morning. I might fall asleep at this game tonight, unless there a big thunderstorm to wake me up. On a side note, it's going to be the first time in a lonnngggggggggggg time I won't be getting drunk at a ballpark. I hate parks that require driving.

    He's a "good baseball man" and once you get that label you will always have that label amongst a significant portion of the media and other "baseball men". Also, he sort of embodies the anti-analyst type of GM, and since his team made the playoffs three times under his watch, and you can shift blame for the demise on ownership, he will always get a free pass.

    We could sweep them and that'd still be an annoying weekend. No, that would be pretty glorious. Right now I've got the Stanley Cup Finals, most recent Bears/Eagles game and most recent Bears @ Eagles game. I used to have a nice streak of seeing the Cubs win there, but it's been a long time.

    +1 Absolutely. Agreed. Vince McMahon agrees too. sports A lot of those guys are athletes on par with any other sport. Being athletic doesn't mean you are participating in a sport.

    Saw that, then saw his line. .277/.365/.323 A LF with 15 singles and 3 doubles and a relatively high number of strikeouts, 18. Still only 19 though. What's his story?

    I prefer to enjoy the wins and not get upset about the losses at this point. There's got to be another 40ish of these remaining.

    But that means paying the buyout plus risking the arbitration money. You wouldn't take that risk if he ends up with 20+ hr this year? You know he'll have a decent BA, walk enough that the OBP is at least passable. If he ends up with 20+HR, he may be the third best position player on the market this coming offseason. Not to mention that he'd be a good bet to earn his $15M next year. Oh...the buyout doesn't factor into the calculation at all. That's going to be there one way or another. Unless you're suggesting it may be better to pick up the option if he finishes the year strongly. That is the suggestion. If you pay the buyout then offer arbitration and you somehow take 20% off this year's salary, you are paying $13.7m, so profit! But if you pay the $2m and just pay him the same salary as this year, it's a loss. Maybe you absorb that loss in hopes of getting those picks. Either way, if he has any sort of recovery, you don't cut him and let walk without arbitration.
