  1. Fukudome with a somewhat cheap double, bouncing off Votto's glove after a few hops.
  2. What the heck did this mean? You wanted to go even deeper into the well for a starter to replace Dempster? They don't have any arms in the system to put in there.
  3. When you consider what kind of money international free agents can get, I think it may actually be depressed a bit. A $4m investment can turn into an extremely cheap 4+ years of service time. Throwing $10m at a group should get you some payoff.
  4. What's the best case scenario if he accepts arbitration? They can only offer as little as 80% of his 2011 salary? Can they cut him and only pay portion of reward? With no other apparent 3B options, is there any chance it's worth it? Best case scenario is that he plays like mid-2000's Aramis. I mean realistic best case scenario. And more on the financial outcome. I guess there's always hope for one last hurrah with him. He was good enough for long enough to make it possible. And there's always the problem of no other options.
  5. Probably the only time a slide is justified, and the only way he could have made it.
  6. 9, and they're 8-1 in those games. You should take the time to read Fred's worthless stats; they're equal parts informative and depressing. So they should win this game, huh?
  7. When they do it once, they do it twice. Rammy hit one.
  8. What's the best case scenario if he accepts arbitration? They can only offer as little as 80% of his 2011 salary? Can they cut him and only pay portion of reward? With no other apparent 3B options, is there any chance it's worth it?
  9. Game started already? Hey, MLB channel picked this one up.
  10. I know I"m ignorant in these sorts of matters, but if a player is deemed an "impossible" sign, why waste a draft pick on him, even if it's one in the 11th round? An 11th rounder isn't going to net you much if you go safe. If you can take a chance on a seemingly impossible sign who might actually sign, it can easily be worth the risk.
  11. Well ever since the focus has turned toward the future beyond 2011, Soto and Castro seem to make everyone's list of "players to build around" or "good young players" or what have you. That's the slack I'm referring to. He's a 4th year player who finished in the top 3-5 players at his postion offensively two out of his first three years in the majors. He deserves some slack I don't see how it's giving slack to consider Geo one of the few pieces that can help in the future. He's still under team control, still 28 and still quite a good catcher over the course of his career. He's been bad this year, and he's missed time. Doesn't mean he holds no value going forward. Castro has also kind of sucked for a month, doesn't mean his future value takes a hit. Granted, he's got a lot more upside with more age on his side, and therefore more value going forward. But Geo isn't getting slack just because people still have hope for him.
  12. I was just going strictly off team OPS on the ESPN site.
  13. It wouldn't surprise me if he retired after this year. He already hinted that he didn't intend to play for a lot longer. I am a bit surprised to think that he would want out so badly that he's willing to give up the 16 million dollar option though. It's not his option, yet.
  14. It would be impossible for him to be as high a draft pick or get nearly as much of a guaranteed contract, so there's pretty much no way he could be a bigger bust than Leaf. Probably more like Maurice Clarett.
  15. I don't see the point in talking about what they can and cannot do. Sure, the Ricketts could always just throw a few more million into the Cubs to allow for another signing. The point is there is a budget for the Chicago Cubs irrespective of the wealth of the family, which is based on the revenue of the Chicago Cubs. That budget is divided in many ways, but the meaningful one is the distinction between major league ballclub and prospect acquisition. Assume the budget is fixed. They didn't expect to suck this bad and be out of the race this early. Revenue is probably going to be lower. If they are going to spend $150m this year (made up number between payroll and signings), why not cut a little bit of that out of the major league budget and give a little boost to that prospect acquisition in what is already an exremely disappointing year?
  16. Nobody can play in the next scrimmage.
  17. Three of those players are gone after this year regardless, so "getting out of their contracts" isn't really a pertinent issue. And why would the Cubs need to "get out" of Byrd's contract? If getting out from millions of dollars in their contracts allowed the Cubs to sign all their overslot guys in the draft and still have enough to binge a bit on overseas FA, would that be making a difference? Sure, but I don't think they're in that position. Well, I'm sure revenue is going to be lower than expected this year. A few million shifted away from a dying major league roster to the minor league system could easily be meaningful.
  18. I think what it all adds up to is that my Friday night is probably going to suck, but I have an outside shot at witnessing history. And it's always fun to be in attendance when Zambrano plays.
  19. Yeah, on the surface I was thinking Ramirez, Pena and Soto have been the most disappointing this season, and the biggest drag on the offense. At least in terms of in comparison to his fellow NL 3B, Ramirez is holding his own. In comparison to other middle of the order hitters though, he's below average.
  20. I used impotence as it pertains to the complete lack of power by some of the guys who are actually doing reasonably well.
  21. I have no idea how that last sentence follows the previous ones. What's the confusion? They don't have a standout hitter anywhere. Where they are doing best in relation to the league, they are still getting weak production. Their best active hitter this year is probably Fukudome, and he's got a sub .400 SLG and they rank pretty low in relation to NL RF.
  22. Holy crap, did anybody else realize that the Cubs lead the league in OPS out of 3B right now? What the what? Ramirez has been terrible, yet the Cubs 3B lead the league. Castro and Barney have both been in a funk but the Cubs are still upper half production in both 2B and SS right now. Pena is weighing down the infield, as is the catcher combination. They've actually gotten a boost out of LF with Dewitt replacing Soriano. CF has taken a hit with Johnson out, as he was doing more than Byrd. This lineup is just littered top to bottom with mediocrity and impotence. Even their most effective hitter this season, Fukudome, is putting up substandard production for a RF.
