  1. way to wait a full 12 hours on that one
  2. It was an example, it doesn't have to be an elaborate string of 1 off trades. Make it simple if it matters to you. Sign Darvish Sell the farm for Shields and Upton Pick up Morales and Stewart Sell off Soriano, Z, Byrd, even Marmol/Marshall as needed to re-stock farm The focal point does not HAVE to be Fielder or Free Agency. It absolutely does if they are serious about the parallel fronts.
  3. Nobody is saying trades won't happen, but trades won't make this team a contender anytime soon. That's a pretty weird statement to make. The incremental gains HAVE to come through Free Agency? Giving Fielder an enormous contract isn't going to be the healthiest thing either. He's a 4-5 WAR guy, and there's 50 of those guys every year(and another 25 pitchers), you can get similar benefit without a millstone contract by exploring some of the guys who are said to be available. What I'm saying is you'll only make incremental gains through trades and incremental gains aren't enough. They are what medium market teams can count on. You are listing an absurdly long list of deals to just make the team okay. It's not going to happen. They should be making trades and adding free agents. They won't be losing their pick, they have the money, they have the needs. It would be a huge swing and miss to come away with nothing on the free agency front. Of course it will also make those "we won't be able to contend for three years so why bother signing guys" prophecies true.

  5. 8/50? I could be wrong but 8 years seems much longer than reality.
  6. I don't really care what the offer was myself.
  7. It'll make him look worse when they completely bomb in their new building with no fans.
  8. If it exceeded the Angerls offer because of the lack of state income tax, it doesn't make sense that it was also $30m more in total value. Florida can theoretically offer a little less than everybody else. If they offered $290m, the state income tax differential is small in comparison to the actual difference in value.
  9. Yeah, it was about the years of refusing to offer him more.
  10. Yeah, Florida is spending money, but not top end money. As long as they keep their name in the papers everyday, and/or for as long as possible, they are getting the PR they were looking for heading into the new stadium.
  11. It doesn't seem to me that the Rangers even attempted to bring him back. Perhaps they question how long he can hold up after that huge boost in innings the last two years. LAA may have painted themelves into a corner, but they are the biggest market team in their division, have very deep pockets and should be able to maneuver around their guarantees.
  12. so he doesn't do enough to help his team win
  13. They've been left in the cold, but have also gotten their man in the past.
  14. they can command all they want, nobody is giving him that. No one thought 250 or 260 would be given to Albert and it happened. I thought he might even get more. 10/250 was widely speculated. 10/200 was where rumors heated up this winter, but suggesting that nobody thought Pujols would come close to the biggest contract in MLB just doens't hold up.
  15. I think it's safe to assume they played it the way they did to purposefully let him sign elsewhere while saving face, and did so from the beginning.
  16. Financial flexibility does not automatically make any team better.
  17. I've never figured out what the deal is with the AAA version of the draft.
  18. It'll make them a better team in 4-5 years, but it sure as hell doesn't make them better now. It doesn't make them better at any point. It may allow them to more easily try and get better, but nothing about him leaving makes them better.
  19. Well, here's to the return of 1990's Cardinals baseball, and hopefully another 20+ years before their next WS.
  20. I believe the WGN portion of the deal is what really sucks. And it wasn't clear at the time how successful things like YES Network would be.
